NFT: Anyone here a web developer?

vandynyg11 : 2/18/2019 2:05 pm
Working with a startup to launch a new product and need a top of the line Shopify site built out. Have a general idea of content and messaging, but might need someone with a good eye for branding as well.

On another note, has anyone built a Shopify site themselves? Considering learning the tool and giving it a go before hiring a pro as well.

Any tips welcome...thanks!

I’m Digital Marketing and Innovation. I could help with the Branding side, not the setup.

So maybe yes.

Don't really do Shopify, though. I'm more of a WordPress/Woocommerce guy.

If you have any questions, I'd be happy to help or point you in the right direction.

Firstly, great job with this site!

However, I really advise against WooCommerce. It’s a great platform, but the cost of plugins really add up, managing updates to plugins, themes, WordPress, and WooCommerce can be a nightmare. And if shit breaks, it is not always a simple fix. Shopify is much more stable and it’s great knowing there is always someone available to call to get help from. I ran a shop for 5 years on WooCommerce, it’s a powerful tool, but in the end it wasn’t any cheaper than if I used Shopify and I would probably have some more hair on the top of my head. Just my 2 cents.
Woo vs Shopify

It's a complex decision. There are a lot of pros and cons either way.

I like Woo.

You completely own your site. You can make it however you want. The sheer number of options for functionality and customization are overwhelming.

If you want a feature, you can add it. There's a good chance that someone has written a plugin to do it. If not, you can hire a developer to custom write one for you. If Shopify doesn't offer the feature you need, you're SOL.

And while some Woo plugins can be expensive, there are a lot of cheap or free ones that work just fine.

If you're not happy with your web host, you can move to a different one. If you're not happy with your developer, you can hire a different one. If you're not happy with Shopify...you have to build a website on a different platform.

On the other hand, Shopify just works. You can often set one up without a developer if you're reasonably competent. Woo sites hinge a lot on hiring a good developer to build it. I've seen a lot of bad/broken Woo sites. In fact, I just got a call last week from a local guy with a borked Woo site. Hope to get sorted for him this week.

Security is also an issue with anything having to do with WordPress. One of my clients got hacked a couple weeks back. That was not fun.

And there's a lower barrier to entry for Shopify. Thirty bucks a month and you're off to the races. Woo requires a lot more investment before you're ready to start selling.

A good number of businesses start out on Shopify and move to a Woo site when they feel they want to mke the site more their own.
