J Anderson no active contract negotiations yet on LC

I'm told the Giants and S Landon Collins are not currently in active negotiations on a contract extension, per sources.

Collins, leads all DBs in tackles since entering the NFL in 2015 (428) and is 1 out of 4 safeties to make 3 Pro Bowls in the last 4 seasons
I've heard the same

expect a tag to be placed.
Tagging him for 11 mil is the best idea
superspynyg : 2/19/2019 8:55 am : link
If your not sure. This will be a make or break year.

I’d rather pay him 11 mil for 1 season than be on the hook for 27 over 3 years if he is not the long term answer. Savings = 16 mil..
if he is the answer we will have more mo te next yea4 for a long term deal.

JMO.
I would Transition Tag him.
Diver_Down : 2/19/2019 8:58 am : link
Force him to prove that he is healthy by marketing himself to other teams. Any offer sheet will require a physical. It also sets his market value which I suspect will be below the FT. If the offer sheet is fair, then we match it. If not, we rescind the tag and get a comp pick next year.
I personally hope we do what Diver said and TT him

and then when he brings us back a big offer we rescind the tag netting us most likely a 3rd compensatory pick. We cannot afford to oay him roughly 10 mil a year give or take for someone that struggles so much in coverage.

Someone posted this the other day. When Riley and Collins were both on the field for us Collins was targeted more in the passing game. What does that say? And all this talk about moving him to LB doesn't make sense because he cannot cover TEs and RBs now. He'd probably have to put on weoght to be a LB making him slower. He is a guy that needs all the pieces around him to be in place for him to excel. We aren't that team. I wish him luck but I just don't see the fit here with us. He isn't elevating our defense. We need to put our resources into players/positions that do.
My biggest concern with LC is his health.
Diver_Down : 2/19/2019 9:05 am : link
Everyone knows that he can't cover. He is an in-the-box safety. But as a shoulder tackler having corrective surgery is a huge red flag. He is 6 weeks removed from the surgery. Even if the surgery is successful, if he is tentative in tackling that he is accustomed to, then he is a liability beyond his coverage skills. Changing his tackling technique is more difficult at his age than said.
I also find the lockerroom culture
mittenedman : 2/19/2019 9:38 am : link
aspect interesting here too. He's a vocal guy and a team captain and the team has been largely dogsh#t since he arrived. Shurmur had to tell him to shut up last offseason commenting about EF + the public fiasco with Eli Apple.

Would it be a shock if the Giants viewed LC as a loudmouth AHole who helps create the bad culture? Everyone from the previous regime seems to be actively getting axed. And then we know he was on the block last year at the deadline.

Just some musings......I admit, he may be seen as the perfect citizen & player but I can't help but wonder..
For balance the opposite

is also true: this is football not a bake sale at your local church.

You should be able to win with big, bruising badass players like Landon Collins even if you don't love everything they say. Manage it, deal with it, win. He's a football player, there's no question about that.
With the exception of 2016

What has he shown? Pro Bowls mean nothing
We need someone
ChicagoMarty : 2/19/2019 10:20 am : link
who can cover Ertz.

That is not Landon Collins!
It must be a requirement to be on BBI

I don't watch the rest of the league like I used to, who are the strong safeties in the league who excel in coverage?

Honest question..

Look at the bright side - it'll give you more reason to indulge your hobby of worrying about the Giants' secondary!
I would move Grant Haley
ChicagoMarty : 2/19/2019 5:39 pm : link
back to S in place of LC.

Haley has demonstrated that he is a solid tackler and he has also demonstrated an ability to cover slot type receivers.

It should not be a real step up for Grant to make the move.

I would then look to draft at least one more corner in addition to Beal.

I would not be averse to signing a FA S to a reasonable deal. I am not familiar with what Safeties might be available at this time but almost anyone can cover better than LC

Moving Grant - undersized for corner but not for safety - Haley? That Grant Haley is going to be our SS now?
Who said he is undersized?
ChicagoMarty : 2/19/2019 7:02 pm : link
I was living in Dallas when the Cowboys had Thomas Everett playing at an All Pro level at Safety.

Haley can cover which is the first competency he needs and he tackles well.

He is smart and was a Captain at PSU and has leadership skills.
LC has his warts
JonC : 2/20/2019 8:05 am : link
but now we're replacing a pro bowl SS with an undersized UDFA CB ...
We are replacing a Safety
ChicagoMarty : 2/20/2019 9:20 am : link
who can't pass cover in a passing league with a defensive back with good tackling skills who can pass cover and do it at a reasonable price.

LC is too big and slow to pass cover as a safety and too small to be an effective lb.

So size is an issue but it is really more of an issue with LC.

Haley has proven he is an effective tackler. That is all that counts. That and the ability to pass cover.

Time to invest our scarce resources where they are most effective instead of wasting them on a Safety who can't cover.
Agree to disagree
JonC : 2/20/2019 9:29 am : link
on the talent and idea. The money part and current state of the franchise, I can agree on.
