Obligatory response, I get it. But he was always going to get good money. San Diego is baseball siberia though. But if it was just about the money, then sure, he did well.

I guess this puts to rest the collusion accusations. The Padres must have missed the memo.

That puts to rest the argument that 10 year deals were a thing of the past and no player would get $300 million.

In the end both got (or in Harper�s case) or will get paid.

The deal covers mostly prime years for Machado and they are loaded with prospects. They made a move to smarten up their front office with analytic gurus and that team is really on the up swing. Too bad they didn't listen to their analytic guys on the Hosmer deal though.

That simply isn�t true. Murray would have to be an above average MLB player and wait until he�s a FA to make big money. Or get lucky and get good arbitration money.

If he goes #1 overall he will have close to $35m guaranteed (8x his MLB signing bonus). If he plays well and doesn�t get hurt he will likely look for an extension year 4 for starter money. The money just isn�t close in the short term and in the long term he�d make a big contract sooner in the NFL.

Manny Machado's deal, as @Feinsand first reported, is for 10 years and $300 million with an opt-out after the fifth season.

A monumental deal -- the single biggest free agent contract in American sports history.

And now every eye in baseball turns to Bryce Harper. His move.

increasing there current payroll 32% ($94M to $123M) for one player is the answer for a small market team. A small market team currently loaded with great young talent everywhere.
