NFT: Has anybody else seen 'Free Solo' yet?

Motley Two : 2/20/2019 12:03 pm
If not, go see it as soon as possible. I wanted to go see at a IMAX(which I'm still planning on), but I couldn't wait & I dialed it up last night.

Absolutely incredible feat with absolutely incredible film making. It's been Oscar nominated for Best Documentary, but that doesn't come close to doing it justice. It's simply one of the most incredible things ever filmed.

Yes, unbelievable

One of the most amazing athletic feats you can conceive of really, and filmed beautifully. Must see.
those people are absolutely insane

incredible, inhuman feat.

If he was anything other than perfect he's dead. I'd like them to release the entire climb.

Overall i thought Meru was a better documentary
I watched it by myself

and I did end up yelling at the TV(which I don't normally do),"Dude! What the fuck are you doing?!!!"

I liked the climber that compared it to going to the Olympics & winning the gold medal or dying, but I think that was even selling it short. Going to the Olympics & winning the gold medal while shattering the old record by a whole lot...or dying.

The dude basically put himself in Star Trek.

There was no record, which Spock refers to when this was filmed, but the story takes place in the future...so now there's a good chance Spock is talking about Honnold.

Very Cool.
thanks for the reminder on this

I used to free climb very small cliffs when I was a teenager. Got busy and didn't climb for a few decades. Tried some indoor climbing and just about vomited. The shape you have to be in is insane.

I'd liken it to having to go the distance in a fight against a fresh boxer every round for 30 rounds without hitting the mat.
I've not yet seen this but recently watched

Dawn Wall which was amazing. I highly recommend it if you enjoyed Free Solo.
I saw 'Han Solo'

Is Free his love child with a Wookie?

Alex Honnold after a screening and it was a memorable encounter. Great kid.

I told him how surreal it was to see someone literally sticking out 2000 feet in the air holding onto the tiniest bits of granite. He said, "Yea it's fucking cool right?"

And then I said he must be one of the greatest athletes alive. He was so humble. He said no way, that he was terrible with a ball. I think those of us that love sports and watched that film would beg to differ. Amazing athlete by any measure.
Waiting to see it in IMAX,

really been anticipating it. I really think it may be the most incredible athletic feat ever recorded. It's hard to even comprehend and absolutely stunning that he completed it.

Agree. I've been watching or reading anything about the guy since I saw him featured in the 'Valley Uprising' documentary a few years ago. Completely fascinating & impressive individual.

Check out this article if you haven't seen it. His brain is different than ours.

Thanks for this. I have Valley Uprising but haven't watched yet. I also recommend The Dawn Wall which features Tommy Caldwell's celebrated ascent from a few years ago.
You gotta watch Valley Uprising.

Give's the entire history of the sport and it's origins in Yosemite. It'll add a lot of perspective to what was achieved in Free Solo and how much further Honnold has progressed the sport well beyond what anybody thought was possible.
I'd recommend watching it before Free Solo.

I would also recommend The Dawn Wall before Free Solo, if you're really into the subject. Tommy Caldwell is one of Alex's heroes and he figures prominently in Free Solo. Plus it's a great doc and Tommy's story is pretty incredible.
I will check it out.

I actually got the recommendation for it after I dialed up Free Solo, so it's definitely next for me.

Mine too.
saw it on the big screen
capone : 2/21/2019 12:27 pm : link
and then bought it for $10 on itunes.... you can watch several times , he doesn't get any less crazy and the girl gets no less cute but you think she will cause his death...If you have never seen "touching the void" thats $5 to buy on Itunes... the movie making is nothing like free solo but the story is even better imo
I bought it for $10 through the xbox store
Motley Two : 2/21/2019 12:36 pm : link
Watched it again last night. Hands still sweating. lol
"Touching the Void" was incredible

It wouldn't be a surprise. I linked a article above about the MRI study he did(they show it briefly in the film), that isn't exactly what they were looking at, but needless to say, his brain is very different than ours(most people).

Watching it now. Jorgeson just did the dyno where Tommy took the down loop. Oh shit!
