NFT: Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim hits, kills man walking on I-690

Jints in Carolina : 2/21/2019 9:31 am
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Syracuse men’s basketball coach Jim Boeheim struck and killed a man walking outside his vehicle on Interstate 690 around midnight, a source has confirmed for Syracuse.com | The Post-Standard.

The man in his 30s had been in a car with four others near Thompson Road in Syracuse when their vehicle crashed for unknown reasons, said a source familiar with the investigation.

The man at some point got out of his vehicle, the source said.

That’s when Boeheim drove by and struck the pedestrian, the source said.

Feel terrible for that man and his family, and also for Boeheim. I can't imagine having to live with something like that, even not being his fault the damage it would do mentally is something I wouldnt wish on anyone.
Just terrible for all parties involved.

On a side note, what happened to B in ALB?
Jesus.

That's horrible.
Good lord

Getting out of your car on the interstate is always dangerous.
That's horrible.

Obviously horrible for the man and his family, and terrible for Boeheim to carry with him.
Just a freak accident.

#Syracuse police: pedestrian on side of 690, Jim Boeheim swerved and hit pedestrian, transported to local hospital (Upstate) + died — 51 years old.

Vehicle was in middle of the road. There will be no charges.
how does a car that crashes into a guardrail
ColHowPepper : 2/21/2019 10:20 am : link
wind up 'in the middle of the road'? Guard rails are designed (not always successfully) to absorb impact, not bounce the colliding vehicle off it.

Hasn't it been snowing up there? I could see a vehicle hitting a guard rail and sliding to the middle of the road in that instance.
for sure a crappy, freezing rain, snowy night
ColHowPepper : 2/21/2019 10:38 am : link
down here, NE Westchester Co., still shoveling, not sure what it was doing in central NYS. But, yes, a glancing hit on the guardrail could have re-directed the vehicle toward the middle of the road. Points taken
I think B in ALB went to $hit...

Absolutely horrible

I live in Cuse, it was crappy here last night with temperatures around freezing and rain, I could certainly envision 690 being slick enough to have an accident with a car bouncing off the rail. From what I’ve read, it was in the middle of the road, several people got out of the car and were near the vehicle, Boeheim swerved to avoid the vehicle and hit one of them.

As mook said, terrible for the family who lost a loved one and terrible that Boeheim will have to live with that.

Ice
reasons to never ever drink and drive

besides the obvious. If you're involved in a tragic accident you want to be able to blow a 0.0 like Boeheim did. Not "under the legal limit" but nada, zippo.

Speed would be a factor in the car ending back up in the middle of the road
That

is awful. RIP. God bless.

I live in the area. It snowed in the morning, then came sleet. then rain that was freezing. The roads were treacherous and the roads so slippery with wet ice that it was like playing bumper cars. Hard to steer, impossible to brake, etc.

No. (At least not the driver. The victim wasn't the driver - I haven't seen anything about whether he'd been drinking or not).
from the linked article above:
Del Shofner : 2/21/2019 5:51 pm : link
“Field sobriety and alco-sensor tests for both drivers were negative for any signs of impairment,” police said. ... Boeheim was taken to Syracuse police headquarters downtown, where he was questioned and released. Boeheim’s blood-alcohol registered a .00, Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick confirmed. ... Friends and family tell Syracuse.com | The Post-Standard that Boeheim does not drink alcohol.

It was just a miserable, icy night last night, at least here in NYC so I can imagine in Syracuse. Very tragic. I think the moral of the story is don't get out of your car onto a highway if you can possibly avoid it.

Oh no this is so tragic!

the years, Boeheim is apparently a teetotaler.
I hit a kid about 30 years ago

He was on a bike and ride it into traffic. Totally his fault. He didn’t die, but it was very bad. I am haunted by it to this day. I could barely function for weeks. I went to work but I wasn’t “there.” I can’t imagine having to be at the top of my game a couple days later like he has to. Terrible. Just terrible for him and the family.

I witnessed one like that on Rt 46 in Little Ferry NJ back in the early 90's. Night, kid was very lucky, launched off windshield into a telephone pole on the corner. I was first there. Only a dislocated shoulder. Coulda been dead.
