Just thought I'd start a new thread for the deadline which is 4 days away: Monday 2/25 at 3pm.
First off, the Rangers are heavily shopping Zuccarello, Hayes and McQuaid, but teams are asking about Kreider.
The Leafs have shown the most interest so far, but the Bruins and Predators have also shown interest.
Gorton will allegedly not move Kreider unless it's an offer "he can't refuse". Kreider finally showing the true 200 foot game I thought he'd show is not someone I'd trade at this point.
The most common names expected to be moved are:
Mark Stone (OTT)
Matt Duchene (OTT)
Artemi Panarin (CBJ)
Jesse Puljujarvi (EDM)
Ilya Kovalchuk (LAK)
and more.
I'll keep this thread updated with news and rumors as it comes out and I welcome others too as well.
Rangers have called up Lias Andersson. I'd imagine Hayes and Zucc aren't playing tonight.

They'll still try super hard, a goalie will make 40+ saves again, and will end up with 1-2 points. Rinse. Repeat.
This callup would indicate to me that Quinn has been told otherwise since that comment this morning.
IMO he's going to be a guy that other teams fans hate and other teams players hate playing against.
Marchand is now (unfortunately) one of the games best players (and biggest assholes), but he didn't break 40 points until he was 22 and 50 points until he was 23.
Andersson is 20 years old. Marchand wasn't even in the NHL at this age. Be patient.

Possibly or possibly just in case.
thats from a fake twitter account; didnt happen.
As for calling up Andersson it's Howden to IR
"Not Coming Back?
According to Larry Brooks of The New York Post, extension talks between the New York Rangers and pending free agents Mats Zuccarello and Kevin Hayes stalled due to length, not salary, and neither player should be expected to sign back with the Rangers in free agency after being dealt at the deadline.
Brooks reports Zuccarello, 31, is seeking a five-year extension, while Hayes, 27, is looking for a five or six-year term on his next deal. He adds that the trade market for the two forwards is also being held up big names Panarin, Stone and Duchene.
TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun reported Thursday, however, that some teams are concerned over how long the Stone situation is taking to play out in Ottawa and are now turning their attention to secondary targets such as Zuccarello and Hayes.
LeBrun notes that teams don't want to risk waiting until Monday to bid on a player and wind up with nothing.
But we're hoping for some clarity on Stone either way in the next 24 hours which gives teams a chance if he doesn't re-sign... important day here it would appear.
— Pierre LeBrun (@PierreVLeBrun) February 21, 2019
TSN Senior Hockey Reporter Frank Seravalli wrote Wednesday that both players could potentially both draw first-round picks on the trade market, noting Zuccarello has boosted his value with seven goals and 22 points in his last 14 games.
Hayes has 14 goals and 42 points in 50 games this season and is the second-highest ranked centre on the TSN Trade Bait board, behind Duchene.
Zuccarello, who sits one spot back of Hayes at No. 7 on the Trade Bait Board, has 11 goals and 37 points in 45 points this season, his ninth with the Rangers."

I was wondering who they were going to acquire after dropping DSP.
The Rangers advanced metrics are horrific - but they continue to accrue points anyway. I cant get on management for that. I do get on them for not moving assets sooner - like last month... I dont know why GMs always think they'll get more at the deadline, rarely happens.
Lundqvist has a NMC and has repeatedly said he's going nowhere. I hope he changes his mind, but I doubt he will. Sounds like he wants to raise his family here. Thought NYI, NJ or PHL could have been options since so close to 'home' for him but NYI and PHL appear to have found their answers already and NJ is properly tanking for another high end pick to build around Hall and Hischier.
Because it takes two.
The other teams like to wait for various reasons. "banking" cap space, Trying to see what they've got in their system and/or seeing if some answers will come from within, waiting on the health of certain players and maybe just wanting to give the group they have more time together.
I was very impressed with him at the last game I attended.
I'm not a big fan of his soft-ish style but he can score, might put him just above Zucarello because he has another year on his contract after this season, so he's not a rental (but it's at over $5M, so positive and negative).
He owns the Habs (24 pts in 20 games), his hat trick vs them last week really showed three very different ways he has to score, including a between the legs top shelf shot over Carey Price on a breakaway.
highlight reel goal, should google it for anyone who hasn't seen it. Shit you maybe, (maybe even is a stretch) see in a shootout or practice he actually pulled off in a game.
They need to add someone who can boost the PP and hopefully take a little pressure off Barzal being the only true difference maker.

I agree. Would love to see Duchene or Johansson be picked up by the Islanders. Stone with the 2 way he plays would make a lot of sense but I think the price will be too steep.
Islanders are a player away from contender IMO, still put them behind TBL, TOR, BOS, but the west is a mess this year.
Maybe move Ho-Sang, he seems to have plateaued a little and at 23 years old isn't young for a hockey prospect and I think is an RFA after the season (not positive).
I'd say Ho-Sang, a 1st and a 3rd for Duchene (if they want a C) or Stone (if they want a W) seems about right.

I am concerned about the Isles giving up too much for a rental because I don't think they are getting past Tampa or Boston in the playoffs, but I would be on board with the moves you suggested because I think Ho-Sang is never going to make it in the Islanders organization. He is talented and another club may get much more out of him.
I'd jump on that in a heartbeat. Prefer Stone but would take either at those terms.

From what I read that's the going (asking) rate for the elite "rentals".
a premium pick, a prospect, and a veteran player/2nd pick
Not to mention the Mike Hoffman debacle where they traded him in the midst of the Karlsson wife/Hoffman girlfriend feud for a 6th round pick only to watch Hoffman then get flipped for a 4th, 5th and 2nd. that is slightly exaggeration b/c more players were involved than just that, but that was basically what happened.
Or at least Friday.

Marcus Johansson would be a good pickup. He won't cost a ton but he would add some much needed secondary scoring. He is a very solid two way player which Lou loves. I would love to get Bode Wilde in return but there is no way that would happen.
Stone (also a perfect fit but he seems likeliest to resign with Ottawa)
Hayes (great fit but would NYR deal him to rival?)
Staal (would he waive for another go round as a rental in the metro?)
Johansson (probably most likely and cheapest to acquire)
Nyquist (would be disappointed to give up a first for him)
Duchene (don't get me wrong, if they get him i'll be happy, but a lot of red flags with him IMO - sky high S%, been on a lot of losing teams, 2 years older than the other 2 top rentals, had the concussion issues - even forgetting the trade cost, resigning him for 7 or 8 years is risky)
No issues giving up the first round pick this year in the right deal, I'd just hope it's for someone who they'd intend to sign beyond this season.
The wild card is Kovalchuk as a plan C. If LA eats 50% of his contract, even with his skills diminished he could have as good a chance of boosting the PP as most of the names on the list above for a fraction of the cost. Does he fit well enough to take on for 2 more years though?

they actually have pretty decent depth with Ladd/Hickey coming back and JHS/MDC proving there's not much left for them in the AHL.

Yea if I had to guess who they end up with he'd be most likely. His best year was with Trotz and he was really good on the PP. I highly doubt they move Wilde or Dobson for any rental. I'd imagine Johansson will get dealt for a 2nd and B/C level prospect - both of which Lou has to offer.
all three have a good chance to be moved.
good luck with that.
good luck with that.
Go for it, Lou
I know the Lighting are good. Caps? Pens?
In the West, Golden Knights?
I know the Lighting are good. Caps? Pens?
In the West, Golden Knights?
Lightning and everyone else right now.
Caps and Pens having down years, but if they get in the playoffs they're both dangerous.
Boston and Toronto 2nd and 3rd best teams in the East IMO.
West is a mess right now. No clear favorite to me.
Nashville and Winnipeg have the most well balanced teams, but Calgary leads the standings. San Jose is a good veteran team, west is a toss up.

Thanks PJ. I don't follow regular season hockey, but the playoffs are always compelling, especially Game 7s. Hockey seems to come down to who has the hot goalie come postseason.

Yep, love it or hate it a hot goalie in hockey is tough to beat. and alternatively a bad goalie is tough to overcome.

The banking cap space makes sense. The other parts not really. Teams know what they have in their systems by Christmas. They know if they can compete for the playoffs by New Years. 'The group' has been together for four months but usually the core many years to assess. Health, unless a top 3 line player is lost for the season in February (which is rare)...
Alternatively how many times have we seen rental players taken in late February who despite skill - never practice with their new teammates (since teams play every other day this time of year) and end up awful in the postseason.
Yandle the most notable example for our Rangers.
Tatar last year for Vegas
Vermette with Chicago
And those were teams that still went far in the playoffs that year despite deadline duds.
If I'm a playoff team I'm trading for top 6 players in January ... get them as much time as humanly possible to acclimate with their lines for the postseason run
good luck with that.
Yea I highly doubt anyone brings back anything more than Karlsson did. I could see a 2nd first round pick conditional on a player resigning, but no way anyone gives up 2 unconditional firsts for a rental.

Seriously! One only gives that ransom up for 39 year olds who have told their GMs they'll only play for one team... and you throw in Callahan to sweeten that pot of course!
I liked him, but that was probably smart to throw him in. He's been terrible the past couple years.

He had value as a rental that year. Because he's not aged well has nothing to do with it.
Basically the Rangers traded three first round picks for 39 year old MSL... all because Sather was retiring soon and didn't care about maximizing Henrik's window, he wanted one title before he left.
