NFT: Sleeping longer- Any tips

GMAN4LIFE : 2/22/2019 9:04 am
Ok so lately i have been losing sleep slowly and slowly. For awhile i would sleep at 10am and wake up at 4 am. Then lately it was 10 am to 3am. Now its til 2:30am. Unsure what gives.

Now i did a sleep study and it isnt that. The only meds i take is lexapro 10mgs before bed. One day i took melatonin but the next day i felt like a zombie through the day.

I dont have trouble going to sleep its staying the sleep is the issue.

I will see the doc for my physical next friday and i will ask him if maybe its the lexapro. But in the meantime, was wondering if anyone had any suggestions here.

take magnesium pills and spray (right before you sleep). You will sleep deeper and will not affect you in the morning.

Also, sounds like your stressing about going to sleep. Try doing a light run when you get home from work. That could release some stress.

Magnesium is better absorbed through your skin. You spray it on your body (usually your feet). Be careful though because it can sting in certain areas. If you ingest magnesium your body doesn't always absorb it and can cause diarrhea.

and I’m not joking. For the last few years I’ve been sleeping from about 10:30pm - 2:30am, wide awake, watch some TV, fall back asleep from 4:30am-6am. It sucked. Didn’t want to take prescriptions or anything and finally gave some CBD a shot (also heard it’s good for joint pain).

After 3 weeks on dramatically improved sleep and less morning joint stiffness and pain, I can say that CBD works. Make sure it’s CO2 extracted and give it a try. I take a 10mg gummies about 45 minutes before I want to fall asleep.

my wife had some knee pain and I told her to take one before bed. She's about 60 pounds lighter so it hit her a bit more than it does me, she slept like a baby, decreased her knee pain a bit so she wasn't aching in bed.

Dosage is definitely subjecting. I'm 160ish and 10mg has been fine for me so far. I may need more down the line and if that happens i'll look into the drops which are more concentrated but for my first go around the gummies have been awesome.

fall asleep fine but you keep waking up early, so screen time and stimulation right before bed doesn't look like an issue.

Try cutting out alcohol after 7-8. Maybe one drink max. Alcohol can help you fall asleep/pass out but the sugar is going to make you wake up at some point during the night.

Are you exercising regularly? If not, give it a shot. Regular exercise is proven to improve sleep duration for a significant proportion of people.

Also,

how is your room temperature? A hotter room might lead to you waking up prematurely. Do you like mattress (ever wake up with back pain?) A bad mattress could also cause you to wake up earlier than you want.

CBD gummies. Pure Potent makes night time gummies infused with melatonin as well as regular gummies for daily use. I think they're great. No mind altering effects since there's no THC, no side effects, not dangerous. Start with a smaller dose and work up.

I take 125mg at a time - but I have a pretty high tolerance.
125mg?

the 125mg pack is five 25mg gummies, that sounds like what you are taking, no? That would make more sense to me, taking over 12x my dosage seems crazy.

I usually just take one about 30-45 minutes before bed. The melatonin ones only have like 2.5mg - so it shouldn't make you super groggy. You can also just take the ones without melatonin - they should still help you relax a bit and get more restful sleep.

But late Jan/early Feb I was sleeping straight from 10:30/11pm-6/6:30am. Every once in a while the 3 year old will wake me up and ruin it, but that's no the CBD's fault.

Definitely try it - one of my best friends has a really bad shoulder and he has constant pain that he deals with. He has to go for therapy regularly - does acupuncture, the whole 9.

He said the CBD made a big difference and helped big time. A lot less pain.

It can't hurt. CBD is very safe - not dangerous or mind altering at all. If you start small and work up to a dose that you think works for you, you'll have no ill-effects at all.

It's really the dosing that hasn't been figured out yet - it's kind of all over the map. You can get stuff like a spray that is literally 1mg - basically nothing. Or drops that are 5mg.... softgels that are 15... gummies that are 125.... 750....

You can't "OD" but the effects can become reversed if you start to take too much and it will actually become less effective, I believe. So, again - I would start with like 5-10mg and just gradually work upwards a bit until you hit the sweet spot for you.

Absolutely. I actually started taking it because my hisc herniation pain krept back up in the cold weather and wanted something for my sciatica. It just so happens that I slept like shit too so I got benefits of both out of it.

Its diminished my sciatica to where I hardly notice it and I sleep better when taking. For $50 per month its a no brainer for me. No more advil, don't need pain killers, sleep better, less cranky, etc.

for me, my first gummie my body felt super relaxed, a sensation i've never had before. Since then I don't feel anything per-say, but I notice that it still controls pain and the sleeping has been steady.

Mess around with the dosage, start small and go up. You can't hurt yourself on it, just don't take the whole thing, haha.

I have the same problem, and I know a lot of other people do, as well. The more I look into it, the more I agree this is just a natural part of our evolution as we grow older. Some speculate that this sleep pattern had evolutionary advantages back when it was necessary to keep guard from predators during night time.

I have learned to live with it, adjusting my sleep schedule as necessary, for instance by going to sleep earlier. It is very important to get that 2nd sleep as that is what really lets you feel refreshed afterwards. But getting back to sleep is often difficult for me and can take many hours. Many of the things that help have already been mentioned, including melatonin, reading a book (not looking at a screen), and I sometimes have a very light snack, as I find the process of digestion can make me drowsy.
Interesting and timely discussion (for me)
LG in NYC : 2/22/2019 2:21 pm : link
as I have been having this issue for a while now... not as bad as some on here have described.

I can fall asleep fine... but I usually wake up at least once during the night (sometimes for the bathroom, but not always) and it is falling back asleep that is the issue.

and once I have a problem one night, I am in my own head for the subsequent nights.

when I really need to log sleep, I will take an OTC sleeping pill which works great... but I don't want to rely on that... so I started melatonin about 2-3 months ago. It works but the one I am using now isn't as effective as the previous one I used (or I need to up my dosage).

either way, it sucks and is making the days harder b/c I am exhausted most of the time.

Also - I cannot recommend the Calm app enough if you have difficulty falling asleep. Headspace is probably just as good - I've just never used it.

The Calm app is just a really great resource to have, though. It has tons of guided meditations for help with sleep, sleep stories for adults, and even just relaxing background sound, etc.

It's like $79.99 to be able to utilize all of it - but for me, it has been super worth it.

There's a free version where you can try all of the features too, though. So, you'll know if it helps or not before making any sort of commitment. I personally think it's great and that the way they update it daily with new content makes it so it will never get stale or to a point where I've covered everything and have nothing left to try/listen to.
If you take Lexapro before bed
Knineteen : 2/22/2019 3:41 pm : link
try taking it in the morning instead.

I'll seldom have sleep problems, but they always seem to resolve on their own. Unless you have something physically wrong, like an airway obstruction, I don't think there is anything radical a doctor can do to help other than recommend the usual "good sleep" habits.
sleep questions
Tom in Kzoo : 2/22/2019 8:05 pm : link
1. Age; as we age we need less sleep,at least >70-75. Not uncommon for elderly to sleep less, 4-6 hrs/night. Quality >quantity matters, so..
2. Do you feel refreshed when you wake/ See # 1..
3. If not, insomnia commonly broken down by:

A.Early: difficulty getting to sleep, say lay down at 11, fall asleep at 1:30: This is typically 2 anxiety, or poor sleep hygiene.
B.Middle: Fall asleep, but awake 1-4, typically 2 anxiety, masking ETOH/drugs that give early sleep, but rebound insomnia
C. Late insomnia: Fall asleep, but wake at 3-5,can't get back to sleep: often 2 age, or etoh abuse, occ benzodiazepine abuse.

Obstructive sleep apnea(OSA), Gastroesophageal reflux(GERD), depression can all impact any of above.

Good luck!

A few things of note RE: SSRIs
Festina Lente : 2/23/2019 3:13 am : link

I imagine you are taking escitalopram for MDD/anxiety.
1) Many people with mood disorders have a history of sleep disturbamces. I am not sure when you began medical therapy but if was relatively recent (e.g. <6 weeks) then this may still be a manifestation of your underlying pathology.
2) More often than not, SSRI's actually improve these sleep disturbances because they help to treat the underlying depression that is inducing it
3) Some SSRIs (especially Prozac) and most newer age SNRIs are "Activating" meaning they have more stimulatory effects and are therefore frequently taken in the morning rather than at night to avoid sleep related adverse effects.
4) Escitalopram is not particularly activating drug but it may have an effect on your sleep so speak to your MD and ask him about his thoughts on changing time of administration to morning.

LAstly, as others have mentioned sleep hygiene is absolutely important in maintaing normal sleep habits (you can look up specific advice online such as maintaing using bed only for sex/sleep, minimizing noise/light pollution, keeping regular cycle etc).

didn’t take it much last week when I had the flu. Just felt like shit from that.

As long as you purchase CBD that’s CO2 extracted you won’t have any other toxins including THC. You won’t get dinged on a piss test. Just buy from a repeatable place, review the extraction process and just make sure you are getting ones without THC (they make them with small doses of THC for people that have more pain).

No withdrawals or issues at all if you don't take it. Basically helps when you need it and won't effect you if you don't.

Also, I've recommended this before but L-Theanine is also really good for anxiety and has virtually zero interactions or side effects. I take a 200mg capsule (Suntheanine cold pressed w/ coconut oil) each morning with my coffee and it gives me a perfect balance of relaxed focus.

Doesn't make you drowsy or groggy, safe to take with medications and even trials that were done with really, really large doses showed no real ill-effects. it would probably be hard to find any issue with it. I've been taking it daily for years - it has definitely benefitted me and I've yet to have one bad experience or interaction. (Not that I'd endorse it, but I've taken it before hitting a bar several times and there have been no interactions with booze either)

Not a miracle cure, but for anyone who wants to try something that is totally safe and might help - I'd definitely recommend it.

I have two types of gummies - I have regular ones, and a set that is infused with melatonin for bed.

I can take the regular ones during the day - they don't make me drowsy or tired. Just a little more relaxed. I don't always use them in the day time, but if I decide I want to, I can do it without it being a problem or making me tired/struggle to function.

For me, I have ALWAYS had sleeping problems. For as long as I can remember. I just never sleep uninterrupted for more than ~3 hours at a time. But when I take the gummies at night, I legitimately stay asleep for longer periods of time. There's a marked difference for me for sure - not just placebo. I could feel a difference.

I do still wake up here and there, but I never have much trouble getting back to sleep. Sometimes I'll just get up and get a glass of water and reset and then I'll fall back asleep easily.

Unfortunately this is not true. Do the research. There are no CBD products from hemp without at least a very small quantity of THC. Many have come up with positive THC results on tox screens from only taking CBD. If your job is going to require drug screens, then do the research, as you could set yourself up to lose your job.

I say this as a big proponent of CBD's. They have helped my mother quite a bit. But I joined several CBD info groups to find out everything I could about it, and it's uses. The simple fact is, there are no CBD products on the market without at least a small quantity of THC. Even if they claim they have 0% thc, it's a marketing decsion to fudge the truth that there is a very small amount (not enough to get you high), that in some people will come up positive on a tox screen.

Very easy to find this all out for yourself. Don't trust the advertising by these CBD companies. It's not in their best interest at this point in time to give you the actual facts. ;)

That's an aspect I personally just don't worry about since I am self-employed and no one is ever going to drug test me (I smoke pot pretty regularly anyway, full disclosure) - what I can say regarding the THC content of most of these reputable distributors is that if it does exist, the trace amounts are so low that you're not going to feel any mind-altering effects whatsoever.

Most people seem to have that major concern when they consider CBD - they think they'll get "high" or freak out or it'll feel weird, but it's a non-issue.

If you are someone who gets drug tested for work, then yes, even though I don't think it would ever come up, I'd still be much more careful and do more research to make sure I had a better feel for the exact amounts, the thresholds, how long it would take to process through my body, etc.
Yeah..

Many do not fail tests when only taking CBD. But some do. I just wanted to point out that it is possible to fail a test when taking only CBD products, even if they claim there is no THC present in the product. So if you have a job that requires taking tests, just make sure you know what the facts are. I'd hate to see someone lose a job they love due to misinformation.

the time, get rid of it and use your phone. I found I would wake up early and if I knew I had to get up soon I would lay awake until it was time to get up.
i have tried to minimize my phone usage before bed

First night - B+
Last night - as bad a night of sleep as I have had in while.

Not blaming the gummies for the bad night sleep but they didn't help.

I guess I was hoping for a cure-all!
try taking a year off work

Experience is going to vary, no way to know how anyone will react to it. I only know my experience and what others share with me. But yeah, give it more time and take it for a couple of weeks before quitting on it if it isn't working out of the gates.
I also should have asked

how much you are taking because depending on your weight, it may not be enough. I only need 10mg but some people take 25mg, for example.
10mg for me

I definitely felt an effect; it just didn't actually help me sleep last night.

will keep at it and give it time.
I couldn’t be more of a proponent of CBD

After years of having some anxiety problems - noting major, but certainly work endused - and having issues with sleep because of my anxiety, I tried CBD and it may sound dramatic, but it has changed my life.

Maybe its placebo, maybe its not, but I sleep like a rock, no morning drowsiness and my anexity is much more under control. I love this stuff.

So sorry if already mentioned.

Essential oil in diffuser or roll-on, check out website linked.

also,
My cousin was just talking about a weighted blanket (15 lbs) and how she has gotten the best night sleep ever. Others chimed in about how well it worked for them as well. Might be worth looking into.

Do you take any during the day?

I can't see it being a placebo. I thought that the first few nights but its been a month and its been the only change I've made.
