Good Ed Oliver Scouting Report

gmen9892 : 2/22/2019 9:50 am
I know many here have mentioned how he was playing out of position at Houston, but until I read this report, I didn't realize how bad it was.

If the Giants are drafting defense Round 1, this is the guy I want. Seems to have all the tools to be a force in the NFL and a pass rusher the Giants have lacked inside for many years now.

Ed Oliver will be even better in the NFL - ( New Window )
fantastic article....

one of the best articles I've ever seen analyzing 1 player....and I like the credibility of it, as White is a former NFL player who obviously knows the position.
Not a big fan

Firstly Oliver is undersized..per reports NFL scouts he weighed 272 lbs during season and he’s slightly above 6 feet. Secondly character issues as an example yelling at head coach on sideline refusing to follow team rule.

Positive..does give effort and quick off the ball.

Overall based on negatives I don’t see him being gettotype player!

Typo error..not a Gettleman type!!
Two concerns
ij_reilly : 2/22/2019 11:23 am : link
1. Level of competition. Highlight videos against Rice? Really?

2. Size

The potential character issues, I'm not seeing any major problem. Have to trust the Giants to sort that out.

The guy clearly works hard on the field.

If I had to guess the busts of round 1 he would be near the top of the list.
Not sure why size is such a big deal
GuzzaBlue : 2/22/2019 11:32 am : link
Would think it helps to be shorter with leverage on either side of the line. Taller is not better in the NFL unless it’s a QB or maybe even WR but A Brown Beckham ect. Size is good for run stuffers, but the way the NFL is built it’s almost better to be quicker than bigger. The obvious is Donald. I’m not sold that size is such a big deal anymore...
The size thing is a concern
gmen9892 : 2/22/2019 11:34 am : link
But he is only about 10 lbs less than Aaron Donald coming out. I think this is the new type of DLineman going forward. Offensive Lineman arent as big and slow as they once were. I think the average weight and height of defensive lineman now and days means less IMO.

Also, he was playing 0 technique against bigger players and handled himself quite well.

3-4 DE? Is that his best position?
what's the real size on Oliver
bc4life : 2/22/2019 12:54 pm : link
I've seen him at 6'1, 6'3"
Way too much about his size
giantstock : 2/22/2019 2:02 pm : link
Yes ofc many factors play into a player but you've got guys in NFL - 5 OF THEM - 272 lbs and under with 10 sacks or more.
was asking about his size
bc4life : 2/22/2019 2:40 pm : link
to get better sense of body type. Donald was 285-295 and short versus same wight and 6'3" -
Oliver

played out of position at Houston, and was still extremely productive. He is incredibly quick and relentless. He'd be a 3-4 DE, but might have trouble on running downs. He can play inside on passing downs. I'd be fine with him at #6.

His best position, IMO, is as a 3T in a 4-3
I feel like 'tweeners

are perfect for 3-4 defense. I'm sure Bettcher could figure what to do with the guy. Also- putting quick "smallish" pass rushers against interior OL on passing downs is the way of the future. And by "smallish" I just mean small for being on the inside, more the size of a DE. For instance, the Giants did it with Tuck in SB 42, they did it with JPP in SB 46, the Eagles did it with Brandon Graham in SB 52 (which is how the sack-fumble that won the game happened) and the Pats copied the Eagles and Giants and did it with Hightower in SB 53 (and he had an absolute monster game). Ed Oliver seems like the perfect guy to pretty much line up anywhere to send him after the QB. Also, even if shorter, he weighs the same as Kerry Wynn and his weight is more compact, and he's clearly very strong, so I don't see him getting blown off the ball and manhandled on run plays.
Let's also remember
Leg of Theismann : 2/22/2019 3:21 pm : link
Guys who are elite physical specimens with tremendous talent can often play multiple positions and excel. The reasons guys can't play certain positions is because they are either not strong enough or not quick/fast enough. You can be plenty strong but too slow to be a DE, or plenty fast but not strong enough to play DT.

Usually 4-3 3TDT players are essentially the same thing as 3-4 DEs. With Oliver's combo of strength and speed/quickness I can't imagine he can only play one position but not the other. He's probably going to be an all-star regardless of what position he commits to playing. Whether it's a 3-4 DE or a 4-3 3TDT.
from what I've seen
Dan in the Springs : 2/22/2019 3:24 pm : link
(and I haven't yet gone through the link - so thanks for that) he's extremely explosive.

What I also saw which troubled me a bit was him ending up on the ground.

I bet he has the athleticism similar to Donald when all is said and done, but I don't believe yet that he'll be able to use it the same way. Really looking forward to reading that article later (partly why I'm posting here to remember to get to it).

Anyone else see him on the ground a few too many times in a game?
I've watched a ton of Oliver over the years

I can't recall him ending up on the ground all that often, but when you are getting triple teamed its going to happen.
Talented player
TMS : 2/22/2019 5:09 pm : link
who had knee issues, great motor, but a little undersized and will not be BPA, with the #6 pick in this draft. Which IMO DG goes for whether it is a QB or not. Just like last year.

Anyone see a comp to John Randle?
Dave in PA : 2/22/2019 5:42 pm : link
Oliver, right now, is probably a little lighter
If you do draft this player
idiotsavant : 2/23/2019 7:55 pm : link
And I'm intrigued, to you also draft a giant NT to back up Tomlinson.

But I don't see going DL twice as any kind of "problem".

Hell, go DL With 3 picks.

It's called 'opportunity' and playing the market. Good stuff, not bad stuff.

If you get the right 3. Playmakers
