...if not the greatest talent along the defensive line, they at least have a decent starting crew and (very) decent back-ups.
As noted in the review:
"Of course, much of the blame for this disappointing result (i.e., allowing over 118 yards per game and 4.3 yards per rush) must also rest with the linebackers and defensive backs, who were often out of position and missed too many tackles."
I would only add that our D-Line would look a lot better if we had a legitimate Edge/LBer crashing down on the QB. Would love to get one in the Draft!!!
Last offseason we were reading how he is extremwly aggressive and would send multiple blitzes. We heard that all during camp as well. But as the season unfolded we didn't really see what was reported. Was that him adjusting to pur personnel? I think so but still.
We traded Snacks, which I was fine with, but the explanation didn't match the product on the field. Supposedly Snacks was a fit for this defense and it allowed other DL to move to more fitting positions. But wasn't Bettcher's D supposed ro be about penetration? Did we really see that from our DL? Not to the extent we would have hoped for.
For that reason, I am agreeing with Sy. Getting a pass rusher inside may be more valuable than and edge rusher outside right now. Obviously the talent needs to be available to us but it wouldn't surprise me to see us go more with a DT or DE as opposed to a an ER early. But if I had to put money on our pick right now I think ER is more likely just based on the pure amount of guys available.

Not sure you can be very aggressive with what we had in the secondary.
Re Snacks not being a good fit, that is completely contrary to what was coming out of team official mouths last offseason.
Then you better have the players to play it....we don't....for Bettcher to come in here and just force this into a 3-4, without players, is on him...or maybe he was the wrong hire...that's on DG and Shurm....
As for the DL, all you have is Hill and Tomlinson.....Tomlinson showed no great improvement over the previous year, and Hill had one of "those games" where even a blind squirrel finds an acorn....Will he be the second coming of Jernigan/Donnell, where he is crowned for one game, or will he be a playah? Only time will tell...
but it looked to me like they played a lot more 4-3 than 3-4. Rarely do I remember them lining up with a nose guard over center, with 2 DEs on either side - Am I wrong?

There is not much to work with on this DL....
Can't wait for the LBer write up....
They didn't have good bodies to run a 43 either. Specifically linebackers.
34 is a good move going forward as it adds a lot of more flexibility. Just need better talent.

They played a hybrid, but the base had two LB/DE hybrids on the field (i.e., Vernon and Martin... rotating in Carter and sometimes Barwin). They would sometimes shift to 4 DL's.
He had his moments and maybe he’ll go through growing pains there, but I’d much prefer an anchor, like Snacks in the middle. Maybe DG could find another NT-type in this draft.
Realizing where pressure should come from in a 3-4 Â
Tomlinson, Hill, McIntosh, Edwards - were alll new to the system, and Hill and McIntosh were rookies - I expect them all to play better in the system this year.
Hill might be the steal of the draft .
Expect the group BC4 life mentioned to improve .
A guy like Allen can disrupt and change blocking
schemes . He does everything well he is a gamer .
Q Williams would be great but we won't sniff him at 6
If OV goes down we have zero pass rush .
RE: Supposedly Snacks was NOT a fit for this defense Â
liked playing in 3-4. When he was asked about the switch to the new defensive scheme - he said something to teh effect of "I've played in that type fo scheme before" - - din't seem all that excited about it.

that no-one is talking about?
Spectacular production and super smart.

In fact from my vantage point, far more pressure....

According to who? Every 3-4 needs. Nose tackle. This is basic stuff.

Because Bettcher wants penetraters. He doesn't run an old school 3-4. Think Wade Phillips 3-4.
