"New York Giants
If Geno Smith does not qualify, or Patrick Omameh does qualify, the New York Giants will not get a 5th for Devon Kennard.
If Geno Smith does not qualify and Patrick Omameh qualifies, the New York Giants additionally will not get a 4th for Justin Pugh."
The Giants are driving an old Ford pickup truck and racing against F1 cars.
This. These teams have figured out you build through the draft, then sign your own players early to team friendly deals that you like and you let the rest go to other teams, reap the comp picks, between those and your own, you get more cheap labor, enough lottery scratch offs you hit on a few, rinse repeat, real easy.
Giants need to realize, FA is like buying a used car, you pay for other people's problems, and in this case overpaying for those problems.
I don't know what they have for an analytics department, but DG doesnt strike me as an analytics guy, this guy signs more bust FAs like Stewart and Ohmameh this offseason, I can see the fan base turning on this guy quick and wanting a more hip/analytic GM in place.
I can't take another 3-13 or 5-11 season, but sadly it might be necessary or make more mistakes in FA trying to win this year.
with more comp picks typically don't sign many FAs. They sign players who were cut instead. Maybe we should follow that formula since most of our FAs haven't worked out, and are often quite expensive.
Giants.com addresses the comp pick, as well as the total/rounds Â
The extra fifth-round selection choice gives the Giants 10 choices in the seven-round draft, including three in the fifth round.
They do not own a third-round choice after selecting cornerback Sam Beal in the third round of the 2018 supplemental draft. Beal underwent shoulder surgery and spent the season on injured reserve. The Giants also do not have their own seventh-round selection after sending it to the Denver Broncos in a trade for punter Riley Dixon.
The Giants are in possession of their picks in rounds one (sixth overall), two, four, five, and six. They have one extra choice in the fourth round (acquired from New Orleans in a trade for cornerback Eli Apple), and two in the fifth round (one acquired from Detroit in the trade for defensive tackle Damon Harrison and the compensatory selection). And they have two choices in the seventh round; the first was acquired from the Los Angeles Rams in the trade that also brought linebacker Alec Ogletree to the Giants, and the second from the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for center Brett Jones.
The compensatory selections are awarded to teams based on the Compensatory Draft System’s net loss formula. Under the system, teams that suffer a net loss of compensatory free agents (CFA) during the prior free agency signing period are eligible to receive a corresponding number of compensatory selections in the following year’s draft, up to a maximum of four selections.
The level of compensation (i.e., the round and selection number within the round) that the prior club receives for each CFA lost is based upon a weighted combination of the CFA’s average yearly compensation, postseason honors and playtime with the new team, ranked against all players in the league who are on rosters.
Last year, the Giants acquired four veteran free agents in tackle Nate Solder, safety Michael Thomas, wide receiver Cody Latimer, and linebacker Kareem Martin. They lost six free agents: offensive linemen Justin Pugh, Weston Richburg, and D.J. Fluker, linebacker Devon Kennard, cornerback Ross Cockrell, and quarterback Geno Smith.

Or we should draft better. Last year's draft was a good start. Except for Lauletta (car issues) and McIntosh (injuries), the other four were solid contributors:
Barkley
Hernandez
Carter
Hill
The Giants have ten picks in the 2019 draft - I'm expecting them to package some to move up for a third round pick.
Outside of Solder (contract aside), very underwhelming group of players who will not be part of the core solution.
It isn't about just what we signed, but also what we let leave. It is no surprise that Pugh and Richburg couldn't play 16 games.
Sure, but part of the calculation is Omameh who couldn't last 10 games on the roster, Martin who's a part time player making starter's money, and Solder who's getting paid like a top tier and unsurprisingly playing like a mid-tier player.
would be great if he played like top tier player but after years with Flowers - having someone keeping people from clobbering Eli is a huge improvement.

And yet Manning is still getting clobbered because the 3/5 of the line on it's best day is below average.
If the Giants invested more wisely last offseason maybe they could have improved more than 2 positions on their line with 40M in guaranteed money and a top 35 pick.

Or if you weren’t limited by an agenda that requires black and white, linear thinking, you could accept that sometimes problems have multiple contributing causes. It really can be caused by mistakes by Reese and DG. You don’t have to pick one.
...it was because Pugh and Kennard were ranked lower than expected. Pugh was ranked as a 5th rounder, not a fourth.
Kennard was ranked as a 6th rounder, not a fifth. Because Martin was also a 6th, the Martin signing nulls the Kennard comp pick.
I can understand the Pugh ranking, because he typifies average to below average. Kennard being rank lower is weird considering the year he had (15 starts, 7 sacks). OTC explanation of Giants Comp Picks - ( New Window )

Well why do you think they FINALLY fired Reese and Ross?
The Rams made out pretty well.
Crazy.

I don't know how the team could have gotten to win 5 games without their leadership

Actually, Stewart was released so that doesn't count, but Omameh? :(
WE WUZ ROBBED
The comp pick is void since we picked up Solder.
Hilarious and sad that Pugh getting injured still manages to fuck us over even after we cut ties with him.

Another thing that could be studied that doesn't require having Brady at QB or Belichick as the head coach.

They can be traded. It changed a year or two ago.

It's easier to blame Reese.
...but look at it this way:
Jerry Reese won't be here to ruin it completely!
