NFT: TV Cord-Cutting Tips

Boy Cord : 3/2/2019 10:00 pm
Moving into a new home so now is as good a time as any to look into breaking free from FiOS. We don’t watch much TV outside of children’s programming, HGTV, NFL, and Survivor. We purchase movies as well.

Is it really possible to save money if we keep the phone line and Internet? If it makes sense, what should we be looking into?

Sure
SirYesSir : 3/2/2019 11:42 pm : link
If you have a smart tv, you can just get subscriptions to monthly pay services that should totally suit your needs.

I have amazon prime, netflix, and hulu and it's still costs way less then having cable and more content than I could ever watch.

Hulu with live TV has almost everything your normal cable will have, and only costs I think around 40 per month.

Just make sure you have a strong internet connection and be prepared for a more complicated process with the remote, but it's not too bad. I'm glad we did it
If you’re really adventurous

And somewhat good with tech, consider jailbreaking an amazon fire stick. Google it. You’re welcome.
Cut the cord, and don't look back.

Look into either Roku or Amazon Firestick as the hardware (if not already built into your TV).

For live TV channels, look into Sling TV, YouTube TV, and Hulu Live TV. (Maybe an HD antennae, based on where you live.)

Then get HBO NOW, Netflix, and if you have Amazon Prime, you'll have a Prime Video login.

Unless you're a sports geek who needs to waste half your life watching live sporting events, it's the way to go. And if you watch a lot of sports, there are packages the streaming services offer.
Do you save

that much money considering you need still need FIOS or similar for internet?
You can save quite a bit.
Amazinz : 3/3/2019 7:11 am : link
It's not like it's the Internet or... You'd be getting that regardless.

Live TV is the worst in terms of jacking costs up. I'd look at an HD antenna instead to get the locals.

Also, the biggest mistake people make IMO is getting married to subscriptions.

You can save a lot more if you initiate and cancel subscriptions based on what you want to watch.
It’s really subjective
UConn4523 : 3/3/2019 7:19 am : link
to do what you describe in the OP you’d likely still be paying $100+ per month.

I pay about $150 per month for internet and cable (with HBO and Showtime). I then pay for Netflix. To me, saving $30 or $40 per month isn’t worth it. I will probably look into it once Disney’s service comes out since having cable is a large benefit with kids and another reason why I’m sticking with cable for now.
What about getting the YES network?
davek3698 : 3/3/2019 7:45 am : link
Need to have that for the Yanks this summer when down the shore. Thanks.

I was paying Comcast about $200 per mo on a 2yr contract that was ending. The price was about to go up about another $20 so I cancelled TV and phone. Since Comcast is the only internet in town, I kept the 60Mbs Internet for $75 per mo and got YouTube TV for $40 per month. I have Amazon Prime for $10 per mo. YouTube TV gives me all the live sports I need and I can cancel that anytime and unlimited DVR. Picture quality is far superior to Comcast TV. Plenty of content on some of the free apps on the Roku TV and Amazon. I don't miss cable TV.

Nope. I got rid of cable and got it back about a year later for almost half the price. Didn't enjoy Hulu and all of that shit. Much easier this way.

Yeah I think it only makes sense now if my 1 or 2 year cable promotions end and my bill gets jacked up. But it just happened and only went up $18 so it’s basically negligible. My bill will go from $147 to $165 - still not worth the hassle at that price. If it ballooned up to $225 then I’d consider it.

There are many options around this. I'm not within the NY network but I've got a pretty good solution. Email me imthatguybbi@gmail

Comprehensive and on point.
I was just looking into it, as my contract with FiOS just expired

My new package, which is very basic, now costs me about $40 more per month. I looked into internet and phone only and it was almost the same price as the triple play bundle. The only real savings was on the equipment (no cable boxes).

A VPN ($50/year) and basic cable will legally get you every Giants game except for CBS broadcasts. However, you can get CBS All Access ($6/month, maybe 2 months needed depending on when games are scheduled) and use the VPN to watch the games.

Can you be specific about the required setup? Thanks in advance.

VPNs and reddit streams and jail broken fire sticks simply aren’t worth the hassle.

You get a VPN program like Torguard, that's what I use, and log in with a NJ or NY location. From there, all you do is go to the Fox sports website and stream the game from the website. All the VPN is is a simple program that makes your IP address anonymous and provides added security to your web browsing (plus the added benefit of Giants games!). This also works with NHL center ice streaming (I log in to a VPN in Canada and can then stream all nationally broadcasted Rangers games that would normally be blacked out) and it would work the same for CBS All Access. The VPN service is only $50-$60 a year. Torguard even includes a secure email account with their VPN service. The whole process is super easy.
