One Guy to Potentially Keep an Eye On: WR Devin Funchess

Anakim : 3/10/2019 11:31 pm
He's only 24 and while he didn't seize the reins when Kelvin Benjamin was traded, he has potential, especially as a RZ threat. He hasn't had a very good NFL career, but he's still young enough to turn it around. My guess is he gets a one-year prove-it deal.

For a team needing an outside WR with size, Funchess could be an option (he's actually almost the same size as Evan Engram).

Oh, and Dave Gettleman drafted him, and Funchess's best year as a pro came in 2017 when Mike Shula was the OC.

Really?

No?

I didn't think so.
Spoctrac has his estimated contract at $8.9M per
Saos1n : 3/10/2019 11:42 pm : link
At that rate, no thanks. If he could be had for $4.5-5M per, I’d be down.

However, there are too many holes to fill on defense to allocate that amount to a WR at the moment
No thank you.
robbieballs2003 : 3/10/2019 11:44 pm : link
By the way, there is smoke with OBJ and SF again.

Fuck no at 8.9M. Hahaha, he's not worth close to that amount.

Robbie can correct me if I'm wrong, but a couple of 49ers players tweeted to or about OBJ
That was one of them.
robbieballs2003 : 3/10/2019 11:53 pm : link
One player tweeted to him followed by someone else with emojis saying shhh and a zippee on its mouth. Then it was deleted. Jordan wrote that we aren't actively shopping him but if the right offer comes along like at least the 2nd overall pick then we'll consider it.

Only thing I found was old tweets and a new account with a rumor.
Funchess
Big_Pete : 3/11/2019 12:39 am : link
I could see Gettleman wanting to bring in Funchess if he was available at a reasonable price, he did after all trade up to draft him.

Funchess does offer a bigger physical WR which creates a different style of matchup problem for teams to defend.
Worth a look if he comes cheap...
Torrag : 3/11/2019 2:09 am : link
...Cam is a lousy, innacurate passer. He could potentially improve here. Again, only at a bargain rate.

But I’m told we also have a lousy, inaccurate passer..😎
The word from Charlotte is that he’s had too many drops ...
Spider56 : 3/11/2019 7:33 am : link
and several have come in big moments. Man, to play WR you got to catch the ball.
Funchess is a possibility
Rjanyg : 3/11/2019 7:41 am : link
If the price is right. The needs at RT, ER, FS trump WR.

Can we stop with the OBJ stuff?
Nice
AcidTest : 3/11/2019 7:57 am : link
player, but I'd pass. We have other needs, and he's going to be very expensive.

Without Funchess
I doubt..
FatMan in Charlotte : 3/11/2019 8:22 am : link
Gettleman is interested.

Funchess disappointed out of the gate with a poor work ethic and although Gettleman drafted him, that kind of thing doesn't sit well with him.
Antonio Brown
cjac : 3/11/2019 8:26 am : link
went for a 3rd and a 5th

I would think it would take a hell of a lot more than that for the Giants to let OBJ walk
Funchess caught only about half of his targets

I thought he was finally putting it together in 2017. Played all 16 games. Put together some solid WR2 numbers. But - he's inconsistent. Lots of drops... injuries. Got benched.

Unless he's on some sort of super team friendly deal, I'm passing.
WR depth is an issue
Capt. Don : 3/11/2019 8:38 am : link
but it is one I think we address in the later stages of the draft and veteran training camp cuts.
I know..
FatMan in Charlotte : 3/11/2019 8:43 am : link
there is a connection to the Panthers, but I'd be surprised if we pursued many of their FA's.

About the only ones I'd think there is interest in is:
- T Daryl Williams
- T Chris Clark (as depth)
- S Mike Adams

I know the Panthers liked RB Cameron Artis-Payne, but he's been injured the past couple of seasons
I think as long as Eli is here
JonC : 3/11/2019 8:45 am : link
OB will be here as well.

I like Tyrell Williams more than Funchess. He'd be a better target. Big play guy. Underutilized in SD/LA - still young. Plenty of speed.

I think Williams is going to get some solid play here in FA. I think he will get a nice contract.
I’d rather let....
Ryan : 3/11/2019 9:04 am : link
.....Engram take reps at WR than spend $ on Funchess. More explosive athlete.

If someone like Buffalo is going to just dump a 3-4 years @ 10M+ per offer out there for him, then yeah, we aren't competing with that.

Which, actually isn't much higher than his actual market value anyway.

I think GB will want Allison back - but if he shakes loose, I'd definitely have interest.

Not even sure if Kevin White is salvageable at this point.

Crabtree might be a fit.

I think we're going to need to spend at least a pick on WR.
I think Williams

Martavis Bryant... another guy with a little bit of a checkered first few years who undoubtedly has some ability and a little bit to work with if we want to try and take on another "reclamation project" like Coleman.
Bryant
JonC : 3/11/2019 9:25 am : link
brings suitcases of baggage.
I also..
FatMan in Charlotte : 3/11/2019 9:26 am : link
think Bryant is one strike away from Josh Gordon
.
arcarsenal : 3/11/2019 9:40 am : link
Just throwing names out there - the WR market is pretty bad this year.

Sometimes when you're playing close to the cap, you have to take a couple of chances on talent. Bryant wouldn't be my first choice, but he flashed legitimate talent in PIT and was very good in a less than full 16 game set in 2015.

Scored 15 TD's his first 2 years in the league.

We've been struggling to find the right guy to put opposite Beckham really since he's been here.

Marshall was the right idea - just a couple years too late.

Shepard shouldn't be relied on as the guy right under Beckham in the pass game. I think we need another good target on the outside who can challenge teams vertically and/or physically.
Not interested in spending any FA dollars
Jim in Forest Hills : 3/11/2019 9:45 am : link
on any of those guys. They have Latimer and Coleman already in the fold and both play special teams, rather keep them as the 3rd WR options.

I do want them to draft someone, I want David Sills but dont know if he will go too high. Looking for a day 3 pick like Green Bay did with MVS and St Brown.

They don't have Latimer. He's a FA.
Latimer - for the estimated dollars (s/b inexpensive relatively)
Bob in Newburgh : 3/11/2019 10:25 am : link
Much better signing.

Does ancillary things very well (specials, blocking for run). Since he is a big play threat (at least against single coverage) he is a good complement to our group as a 3-5 read for Eli.
I think some on here just love so "No way" to everything
PatersonPlank : 3/11/2019 10:49 am : link
Funchess is a fine receiver and could help us as a big outside guy to complement OBJ and Shepard. I agree $9M is too much, but for a lower price he'd be good for us. He's clearly be the bets 3rd guy we've had in years.
Funchess really..
FatMan in Charlotte : 3/11/2019 10:55 am : link
isn't a "fine" WR. He was their #1 for the past two seasons and he finished with the worst stats of any #1 WR in the league.

His career catch % is 50%.

I'm fairly certain if a Giants #1 (or even #2) put up similar stats, they'd be run out of town by the fanbase.

Personally I think Giants roll the dice again on the in house options here. Latimer and Coleman specifically.

Have you seen the types of contracts given out in recent years? Google it.

I've seen it projected that Adam Humphries is getting 10m/yr. Adam Humphries. You're not upgrading Latimer/Coleman for less than that, it's not worth it.

Funchess isn’t good and spending dollars during the early days of free agency hype would be a bad decision.
