NFT: Mets Chat: Dom or Alonso?

DanMetroMan : 3/11/2019 9:15 am
Fun battle going on

-Drew Smith back to NY for an MRI on his elbow (not good)

-Oswalt has touched 94-95, I like him as an "extra" guy but I remain concerned with the SP depth. Brodie has done a strong job adding to the positional depth (OF not great) but the SP is insanely thin.

-Don't like the idea being pushed of Rosario 8th. CF should hit 8th at least until Lowrie returns.

-This lineup should be very solid (especially once Lowrie returns) really think they need to add additional SP depth. They will need roughly 10 to get through the season and those arms barring a rapid ascent from guys like Kay or Peterson simply don't exist.

-Please sign Josh Fields. Thanks.

Is Gomez going to play in any ST games
ZGiants98 : 3/11/2019 1:01 pm : link
or is he pretty much going straight to the minors?
Not a shock.

@NYPost_Mets
One thing I heard today: Mets are much more likely to carry 7 relievers than 8 for the first month of the season because of all the built-in off days. Luis Avilan and Hector Santiago are strong candidates for those final two spots, behind Diaz, Familia, Wilson, Lugo and Gsellman.
Another bomb by Alonso...
ZGiants98 : 3/11/2019 1:27 pm : link
This is getting insane.
Ok frozen rope off the wall
ZGiants98 : 3/11/2019 1:29 pm : link
My bad. lol

Mets up 3-0 early against the potential Astros 5th starter. Start the season.
Not
DanMetroMan : 3/11/2019 1:52 pm : link
at all aimed at ZGiants and I think Alonso will be VERY good but the Goldschmidt stuff isn't fair. Goldschmidt was an insane college hitter who has never stopped hitting. Career .352 in college, .317 in the minors. Not saying Alonso can't be everything we want but Goldschmidt is a freak.
Im not comparing him directly to Goldschmidt obviously...
ZGiants98 : 3/11/2019 1:56 pm : link
Was just saying if they consider him the "next big thing", "huge impact bat" etc.
Vargas escapes a runner on 2nd and 3rd
ZGiants98 : 3/11/2019 1:56 pm : link
with one out. Nice.
I am getting a "special" vibe from
ZGiants98 : 3/11/2019 1:59 pm : link
Alonso though. He just as an "it" factor I haven't felt in a while. His abats are starting to feel like must watch TV (I know its only ST) but I dont think I remember thinking that about a guy in sometime.

He could be the next "face of the franchise" with Wright finally hanging it up.

I think it was Howie Rose
debo_GIANTS : 3/11/2019 2:04 pm : link
or someone else on the radio broadcast who started the Goldschmidt comps and it had more to do with overcoming defensive issues at 1b. Goldy eventually turned himself into a gold glover. Alonso has been putting in extra work by all reports.
I dont think Alonso is ever going to be a + defender
ZGiants98 : 3/11/2019 2:07 pm : link
But his one strength defensively he has is really the only thing I give a damn about for 1B and that's picking up tough throws. He is excellent at it. He can be a tank out there but if catches all the tough throws he's fine by me.
Vargas is having an excellent spring
ZGiants98 : 3/11/2019 2:11 pm : link
Real nice strong/accurate throw from McNeil at 3B.

Jason Vargas' Grapefruit League ERA: 1.23, tops among Mets starters. Vargas has eight strikeouts and two walks in 7.2 IP.
Haha can Alonso play S?
ChaChing : 3/11/2019 2:33 pm : link
He just trucked a base runner while reaching out for a throw - and made a nice catch considering all that

Vargas w/ 4 scoreless & Lugo w/ a 5 pitch 5th
Weird...

Brewers announced that Mike Moustakas will be their full time second baseman. Hes never played there in pro ball-mlb or minors- in his career.

@MattEhalt
One thing I've heard: Mets talked to starters during the offseason (Clay Buccholz, Gio Gonzalez, etc.) However, they weren't going to guarantee a spot. They have Vargas there, and they like how he finished.

Salary is obviously a factor, but let's be fair, it is for every team.
I wish arc stuck around to see....

Lovitz! lol

To each their own, but seriously dont get it. I semi get rooting for the Yankees. Fine, your pissed at the Mets, root for the other NY team. MANY people root for NY sports period so that isnt that strange even though I would never do it. I just dont get how you could never be a Mets fan again after rooting for them for 30+ years. So if Conforto, Nimmo, Rosario, Thor, deGrom, Wheeler, etc are in the playoffs this year you arent rooting for them?? That's just odd to me, if not stubborn even, to spite your nose to cut off your face... all to make a point.
And to be clear not criticizing anyone

They were interviewing him immediately after that play:

"He's a little bigger boy than me..."
"...guess I shoulda laid down a better bunt!"
I don't see the point of having
CMicks3110 : 3/11/2019 4:40 pm : link
both Lagares and Broxton on this roster. They need to make a trade. It makes more sense to have rajai davis than it does to have Lagares at this point. I would eat some of his salary and trade him some int'l slot money or something. Davis is a base stealer, will be pivotal late in games and can also be a defensive replacement. Just makes more sense.
Rajai
DanMetroMan : 3/11/2019 4:44 pm : link
Davis has indicated he will be opting out if he doesn't make the team. Liriano has an Asia opt out, we shall see on him. Hech has a final day of ST opt out, Gomez no word on his opt out.

I fully agree. Given his cost he's overpaid given the realistic best case (+ glove). Reports on his throwing have been very poor and I suspect his arm never recovered from that injury a few years ago. That being said I'm sure they have tried.
If that's the case
CMicks3110 : 3/11/2019 4:54 pm : link
and if you believe Brodie's sentiment of the "best" 25, i think you have to cut Lagares and eat the money. There is absolutely no point to having both.
I'm not sure that we have the OF
Metnut : 3/11/2019 5:16 pm : link
depth to cut Lagares. I havn't seen how he looks this spring, so if he looks like shit then ignore me, but we have pretty poor OF depth in AAA and our system, and really don't any have any natural CFs other than Broxton.

IMO, Lagares fills a need on our roster. Unless there's a particular player or upgrade that cutting Lagares allows us to obtain, I don't see the point in doing it and weakening our roster just to gain "financial flexibility" which who knows if the Wilpons will even use.
Rajai Davis and Carlos Gomez
Metnut : 3/11/2019 5:18 pm : link
did not play like guys who belong on a big league roster in 2018. If either of them (barring Gomez showing a serious improvement in Syracuse) play major innings for us, we're in trouble.

Lagares is always hurt but at least offers the likelihood of being an above average reserve player.

You send Alonso down, by the time he comes back up he may be in a slump in AAA or he wont be used to that MLB life again. A lot of it is confidence and comfort. Thiucal mets will make writ decision.
Alonso at 1st
Smith in the corner OF w McNeil & backup PH?

Smith also is no longer going to play OF (nor should he) and has not taken any OF reps.

Just sayin. Its obvously been discussed within the clubhouse

Callaway so far can't even figure out how to do a lineup card or knows who or what is going on w team defense decisions. Not the best source IMO. I think Keith Hernandez actually may know more lol. Why would you ever limit a player's versatility in modern times w a silly statement as that as a manager? makes zero sense.

Lowrie has begun hitting and throwing.

I personally dont get why McNeil isnt getting every rep possible in LF. Its where hes going to end up sooner than later anyway. We already know he can play 3B/2B if he has to. Why waste time with it during practice?

At least the Mets have a good problem this spring training so many guys hitting well...versus the norm of many of the teams the past 2 decades.

And I won't even speak of the pitching bc of superstition.
I agree but the roster is a little awkward.
ZGiants98 : 3/13/2019 12:04 am : link
Smith and Alonso are both hitting but only one can start. The other really needs to go to AAA. McNeil deserves to play after what he did last year (all of last year) but he's being jerked around a bit. Just put him in LF and leave him there until Cespedes get's back. JD Davis is hitting but is he screwed for somebody like Frazier? Yuck.

Love the depth but all these moving pieces are not exactly ideal.
Hitter wise anyway

Davis has def earned the opening day start. Frazier can take as long as he wants. Id prefer him as a later depth piece for an inevitable injury to be honest.

I just want to see the best bats on the roster instead of the service time crap and/or they need abs philopshy. No other sport does this.
Either way I think theyll move

McNeil to 3B then and start Lagares in CF temporarily then.
