liked him coming out of college. Most did as well. He's a very solid player. My guess is that if we make a big signing in FA it will be for an edge rusher like Smith. But as noted, he's going to attract a lot of interest.
In one of his what I would have done or sleeper picks for NYG he had a nice write up on Preston. I never forgot it and and have followed Smith career. He does a lot well, if he had lasted until the 3rd I believe we would have taken him over Odi.
But he is a good player. Wins with his hands, sets the edge, isn't a one trick pony. I remember watching him beat up on the cowboys last year...so that's always a plus.

Chandler had an uptick of sacks under Bettcher, hopefully that'll be why he is being targeted. Maybe they see him as a guy who in the right scenario/utilization could be a double digit sack guy.
Vernon, despite being a massive bust, got us a top 3 RG in the game.
That didn't make him close to worth it.
Of course we'd have to see the cost for Preston Smith, but it feels like Gettleman is repeating Reese's errors.
The idea of getting an edge rusher who has low sack totals but gets pressures is the same. But I'm wary of blanketing all players under the same general umbrella. Vernon wasn't successful for a number of reasons, including injury, regime change, etc.
Teams always overpay in FA. It's the nature of a competitive Â
marketplace. I'm not thrilled with overpaying either, but our defense was so godawful last year that we need to make some moves in FA or look forward to another 5-6 win season.

The 5-6 win season is coming whether we sign Preston Smith or not.
He flashed in 2017 but 4 sacks last year and in a contract year and with I think all but one of those sacks coming in one game. I don't see it. Not to be constantly referencing Chris Cooley, but in his game reports he was constantly grading Smith a C or worse.
I live in the DC area and they can't wait to let this guy go because he is as frustrating to watch as we were with OV.
If you think watching Vernon go by in the background as the QB steps up to make his throw is frustrating; wait until you see Smith do the same thing on way less consistent basis.
I'm all for analytics but the pressure vs actual sacks is night and day.
Good QBs feel the pressure and still get rid of it, bad QBs still get rid of the ball and have 50/50 chance of connecting. Being around the QB isn't the same as disrupting a play.
Spend on FA to fill the holes which begs the question, how would you fill them then? The draft is the WRONG place to fill holes. Drafting for need results in reaching. So how would you guys fill them then?

"The draft is the WRONG place to fill holes" - you could get a job in the Giants front office ;) They are right there with you.
Unfortunately, it shows you he can play downhill but out in space you'd need more video so you could see his COD, hip turn, ability to play multiple coverages, etc.
Bottom line, he's got four career sacks and I haven't seen a pressures stat that says much more.

Might be THE strength of the draft.
Yup. Sure is.

The OL is supposed to be deep in rounds 2 to 4.
That’s what I’m hoping for to try any upgrade from Halapio/Pulley. I’d take a rook over either of those 2.
But couldn't this just have been included in the below thread.
I mean no disrespect, but multiple threads on the same topic are just going to clutter the board. Again, just my opinion.

And sorting through all the crap on those threads is annoying.

It is first round heavy then drops off. I would say OL is probably the strength of the draft. It should go deep.

Nope, and who cares. Those threads get bogged down with non-giants news.

Actually Figgy, I prefer this method of posting given how cluttered the other thread gets or has gotten
Likely we want a balance of Veteran presence especially in the pass rush department.
Learning curve at ER in the draft especially when you get picks 2nd round or later there. See Zo Carter as a recent example.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing.
This sums him up well. If folks are expecting a pass rusher they will be disappointed.

Sounds like.....Olivier Vernon.
He played stand up last year
Quote:
he's a 3-4 DE who sets the edge well, and can rush the passer a little.

Was he playing DE or OLB? Was he on the edge? Were they running a 3-4 or a 4-3?

They've been running a 3-4 for years. Had Iannodis and the two Alabama guys up front. Kerrigan and Smtih at 3-4 OLB

I think he has 24.5 career sacks. 4 last year.

You're right, I misread in a hurry.
