unless they are desperate to overpay for a player(who that would be I don't know). 49ers signing some 'under the radar positions'. Maybe thats the way to go... get our guys signed (the affordable ones we want to keep), then see who is left at reasonable prices? Latimer, Webb, Wynn, maybe Jamon Brown....again, at reasonable prices. This team has too many holes to spend big on ONE position.
Money is being spent on available Free Agents now. The cap sucks IMO. They need to do something better with the cap. It's starting to get like the NBA with only having enough money for a few max contracts and Franchise QBs and Pass Rushers are taking up a majority of that space. It gets increasingly more difficult to field a decent team with a few good players and the rest sub-par, just to fill out a roster.
If the Giants spend big money on so-so players, they will continue to suck.
These "the Giants have no choice" and "the money needs to be taken in context" arguments are the same things Redskins fans have said since free agency started in the 1990s.
We're still building a nucleus on this team, making one big free agent splash isn't going to put us in the playoffs. Sign guys to manageable contracts, don't over pay anyone, and sign multiple players rather than one big contract.
The numbers going around for flawed players is insanity. Bobby Hart got $21 million dollars ffs. Save your $, we're bad and not getting better by over paying middling players. Just tank it up again, get a QB next year and keep building.
that DG has never traded down (neither did Reese), but know that the 6th overall pick (Giants) is worth the 10th, 71st, and 113th pick (which all belong to Denver).
If given the opportunity to move down 4 slots in the 1st and add a 3rd and 4th rounder, I would do that in a heartbeat.
The draft is the time to shine and acquire talent. This is a strong draft class and the best place to add talent for a team that needs a lot.

We hear that every year. It's BS. We do have a choice. The choice is to not make the situation worse in 2-3 years. People said we didn't have a choice when we signed Olivier Vernon. How did that work out? Same argument was made last year on Nate Solder, who played like crap but was the highest paid LT in football.
You don't rebuild a football team by making desperate decisions.

Based on the opening to FA I am more open to a trade down in any round at this point. We need players, and certainly won’t be able to do it in this crazy FA period.
and build this team the right way. No more overpaying. No more developmental players with premium picks. Build the trenches and fill out the rest of the roster. If they don't sniff the playoffs this year, so be it. Don't create holes by trying to fill some. If a QB can't be had at 6, go with the BPa or trade it. If Haskins (the most likely QB) is their guy, pick him and keep going. This team has to start looking long game.

I agree, throwing dumb money at players that are flawed will not be a viable longer term. Make some bargin bin signing preferably for players who WILL NOT effect the comp pick formula. I.E, cut players, or players who salaries won't qualify
I am really serious about that, this team has to get a better grip on this exploitable resource that other good teams seems to "get" but they don't.
The good teams build through the draft, and make shrewd moves with extra picks to develop players then let them leave when their free agency comes up and get more picks. Its really simple when you think about it.
Yes, let's confine all our mistakes to draft night this offseason. Â
this team isn’t 1 or 2 players away from competing for a championship. Sit back, let the high priced players go, and spend the dollars on 2nd and 3rd tier free agents.
Down the road when the team is close, then fill those roles with a big splashes.

Misinterpreting what I was saying. I don't think we have the salary cap room to do stupid things. I think we have to wait for the second round of free agency (maybe not for a RT) but we aren't in position to be a major player even if we wanted to be. So I think we agreed from the beginning.
Fill holes in FA and the draft is used for the future (and depth ) BUT, you can’t pay these prices. You never get off the Merry go Round that way. Target players, offer them fair contracts. If no dice, go to plan B. Solder was a special case last year. He was the ONLY LT available or else it was more Eric Flowers (which wasn’t an option). DG acted accordingly but there is no such scenario this year so NO ridiculous contracts.

That's categorically untrue. Faced with the exact scenario, the Pats opted to be patient, wait out the draft, and trade for Brown. A player who's 5 years younger and was signed today for just about 2M more dollars.
And let's not act like Flowers was so objectionable to Gettleman -- given that he was slotted, and started 4 positions down.
If it costs $7m to get bobby hart sitting back is not an option Â
I'm not saying spend recklessly, but if you have the chance to bring in a player that fits the scheme / system / lockerroom at anything remotely approaching a solid value you have to do it.
If you can get Daryl Williams on a reasonable deal, do it. If not settle for more of a depth signing like Remmers.
Same for safety + CB. Same for edge rushers. There will be values in the FA market at some point, there always are.
You don't get any credit for not spending money. Nothing gets accomplished by signing another 8 guys off the waiver wire the day before the season begins.
...we have to use it wisely to shore up the roster. There are other FA options that represent an uopgrade to Chad Wheeler. It doesn't have to be Williams at $10M a season.

Eric,
I 100% agree with you. Here's the problem: the NFL in 2019 has more than ever become a "win-now" league, and that has always particularly been the case with NY sports teams. My fear is that Shurmur and Gettleman will fear for losing their jobs if they have another 5-11 season and that will cause them to overspend to fill holes with mediocre players just so they can make sure they go 8-8 and keep their jobs one more year. Honestly, it's kind of the fans' fault at that point, because people can't stand to be patient and see their team lose for another year (although that's especially the case with Giants fans because it's been nearly a DECADE of losing already. Sheesh.
i can see the giants investing some larger money into Safety, Edge or RT. MAYBE two of those

That would be ideal, then knock it out of the park in the draft.

I prefer to sit back -- preferably, with a bourbon. Rather than ring my hands over shit I can't control.

You lose some.

Yes. If they signed Daryl Williams and waited a week, Id be fine with that.
