Its appears to be a well thought out contract.
He will make 45.3M in 3 yrs then the remaining years are team option at the listed base salary.
Only 26M guaranteed at signing but the way the roster bonus are laid out it pretty much guarantees hell be there 3yrs. I think.

On S Landon Collins $84m deal with the #Redskins, theres a $15m signing bonus in 2019 and a $6m option bonus in 2020. In all, $32m fully guaranteed over the first two years. He has $12.5m in 2021 thats guaranteed for injury only.

The total amount of the contract is always a joke because most guys wont play out the entire deal or will be restructured. But 16 million a year hitting the cap the first two years for a Safety that doesnt really make game changing plays, ouch.
I know, hes been so successful since leaving Carolina (Norman not Gettleman) What a clown.

Spotrac has updated it. But it doesnt change that he still is pretty much guaranteed 3 yr at 15M/ yr (45.3M). The dead cap would be a lot to take cutting him before than.
They are praying their defense is good enough to maybe squeak into the playoffs w a w defense and a running game I guess.
The key will be can the skins build and maintain the right defense around Collins.
Just about Every player in this league needs other players around him. Collins was awesome in 2016, not good, not average, awesome. Why?
JPP, snacks, Vernon, DRC and Jenkins... thats why. If Collins is on an island all game long and the pass rush isnt getting home he will be exposed, just like every other DB alive.
We love to go nuts about the money and I get why but Collins is still so young. What if he stays healthy? Could happen. The skins D isnt exactly barren. Whopper of a contract to be sure but its not the worst risk to take. The guy can play.

djm, I agree with most of your posts, but I have to respectfully disagree on the money aspect with Collins. I like him as well and think he is a very good safety, but hes not the game changing type of player that commands $15M per year. Good for him for getting that contract, but I absolutely get why DG would choose to pass on this one.
If the third year is guaranteed for injury only, then the Skins can cut him for poor play and not pay him.

I kind of felt that way too. No more stop gap measures. Look for good deals like the Vernon trade, let go of the past and build through the draft.

He's not the best SS in the game and outside of 2016, he made few game changing plays. Yet he's getting paid based off his 2016 season. Why does 2016 outweigh his performance in the other 3 seasons?
2016: 5 INT 1 TD 13 PDs 0 FF 1 FR 4 sacks 125 tackles 9 TFL 5 QBHits
2015 + 2017-18: 3 INT 0 TD 19 PDs 3 FF 2 FR 0 sacks 101 tackles (average) 13 TFL 5 QBHits
He made more big plays in 2016, then his other 3 seasons, combined.
You mean the same Steve Smith he cut?

He's guaranteed 45M
That's the minimum cap hit.
If you step back and look at this, Collins is guaranteed $45M after coming off shoulder surgery. And that injury shouldn't be downplayed. It isn't like he's a cover DB where hitting is secondary, his main strength is hitting, and leading with that shoulder.
I think we will be very happy we walk away, especially when he has a knockout hit that takes himself out.

The market disagrees with you. I think the Giants misjudged the market for safeties. They could have had him this year for 11 million (we are paying Ogletree 10 btw) which would have been a bargain given what he got and Mathieu got and worked out a deal or traded him if they didn't want to play in the market. Instead they got nothing. This is the way to build team? I don't think so.
So comp picks count in your calculus? Because everyone is bending over for Belichick every time he lets a high priced player go and recoups a nice draft pick. But when we do it, it is a sign we have no plan.
There's things to question DG about. Letting Collins walk for this contract, is not remotely one of them.
I bet we'll still get a quality S at $6M/yr or less.

Even at $11M, Collins would've been overpaid. He's living off his 1 all pro season and his numbers the last 2 years combined don't come anywhere close to that season. It's not like 2018 was his best year and he's on an upward trend. It's looking more and more like a fluke.
It is, what it is.
I'm bummed Amos is gone.
This is one of the rare occasions where all Giants fans appear to be in agreement with a move (or non-move). Conversely, Skins fans are really geeked out about this signing.
They see a 25 y/o, tackling machine, locker room leader whose 2019 cap hit is only $4 million. They also feel this deal will look cheap in two years after the cap continues to increase.
The Skins have had problems with entitled players that don't want to practice hard. That is definitely not Collins. However, he was in the press more than we wanted him to be in NY. Skins players have a history of flapping their gums too much (see DJ Swearinger most recently).
Also, they should beware of the $4 million cap hit. Somehow, some way their cap will be hit for the additional $41 million. I have heard people tout that it is basically a three-year deal. Okay, that means $41 million will be hit in years 2 and 3 or at best, 50% in year 2 and 25% in years 3 and 4 with a post-June 1 designation.
The Skins aren't going anywhere in 2019. Has anyone taken a look at their WRs and TEs? Jordan Reed was finished two years ago. Can Trent Williams stay healthy (that's arleady a no)? Guice could be the real deal. Keenum and McCoy? Seriously? They have $28 million in cap dollars committed to the QB position this year and most likely next as well.
What Collins does, however, is keep them in the 8-8 range that makes it more difficult for them to land a franchise QB in the draft. Not impossible, but it will cost more to move up and they won't get their pick of the litter.
I'm just ecstatic they spent the money on Collins and not CJ Mosley.
