FA, $$$$ spent, plenty of holes, and DG

George from PA : 3/12/2019 5:58 am
I think most of us went from, who did we sign to stay out of it until FA becomes more reasonable.....crazy numbers for historically lesser position. I loved Collins and happy for him, but that is crazy numbers for an in the box safety.

RT should be only spot that we should over pay to finally field an NFL quality OL. 9 years has been enough and in all honesty, it will provide the Giants with a very competent unit even with Eli.

Hell, special teams havent looked this good in a longtime either....which leads us to the defense, the barren defense

We arguely have lost their 3 best players in Snacks, OV and Collins, with only Collins demostrating that he hated to lose. "Hating to lose" is what DG has said he wants from his players. Hopefully, he can find several.

Bettcher has his work cut out for him as it looks like he will only have 4 deserving returning starters: Jenkins, Olgetree, Hill and Tomilinson. All others will be FA, draftees, 2nd year players or underpreforming players.

I am assuming the draft will be heavy defense and it looks like we will need several gems to be found in the later rounds.

I also expect FA to settle down some. Edge rusher is only spot worth overspending to a degree, maybe corner.

Granted, to make defenses work well....they need DL and LBers that stop players like Barkley, lbers and safeties that cover players like Engram and corners and safeties that cover players like OBJ. Not an easy task.

But as the playoffs showed, defenses still win championship. The Giants can run the ball, now they need to figure out how to stop the run and get to the QB.

And speaking of QB. Looks like they will kick the can to another year.

Why does it look like they

are gonna “kick the can” to another year? Where is that coming from?
It is coming from imo, pressing need
George from PA : 3/12/2019 6:39 am : link
Right or wrong, the Giants believe Eli can still play....if protected.

And unless,i am missing something the defense must get fortified to be at least competitive....

And @6....the talent will dictate to go front 7 on D
You can’t fix all these pressing needs
mattyblue : 3/12/2019 6:59 am : link
In one season. They have to get younger and better and then build behind the players they have. If they attempt to just keep plugging holes they will continue to suck. QB is a much more difficult position to hit on than most of the defense. Few players especially on defense and QB get drafted and dominate their position immediately. Everything will take time. I don’t have any clue if the Giants will draft a QB this year or next or whatever. I don’t think Shurmur or Gettleman truly believes that Eli and the Giants only need a few defense players to achieve sustained success. Gettleman isn’t going to ever say Eli is old and we need a young QB immediately. He will always say they feel good about this and that. If Gettleman starts to plug holes to maybe try and win a few games, it will end in the same garbage we have watched for awhile now. I have no idea what they think of Haskins, Lock or even Murray, but if they had beat Dallas in the last game we would be drafting outside the top 10. A few more wins this year and it’s gonna cost an absolute fortune to get a QB. We don’t really have a fortune to give. If they feel good about a QB this year they will take him. Moving from six to say 3 is expensive but moving from say 13 to 3 will be brutal.
I dont agree with several of your points
George from PA : 3/12/2019 7:34 am : link
DG was as critical as i can remember toward Eli from Giants mgt.

Get younger ? Giants are not old outside of Eli. Jenkins is at the cusp for corners.

Sustained success would be ideal. NE is omly team that qualifies, imo. Lets start with plain success before we go for sustained success.

I would say that if we could block philly and dallas front 7....our record for the past decade would be different.

Get a RT and nickel LBer(fa)...edge rusher(@6), and FS (2nd rd)....and get lucky with a couple of contributors from 4th-7....with a much kinder schedule ....

Should lead to success.
Lorenzo Carter is gonna start
Rjanyg : 3/12/2019 7:53 am : link
He played very well last year.

4 positions need to be addressed between FA and rounds 1&2 of the draft:

1. ER
2. RT
3. FS
4. QB

It can be done this year, RT and ER in free agency, QB and FS in the draft.

I think you are missing a few spots

I am pointing out the critical spots. We have 9 draft picks so I expect CB, WR, ILB, DL, ER will be added with our other picks and I do think a couple of 2nd/3rd level Free Agents will be brought in during the coming weeks.

RT and ER should be the priority this week. QB and FS might be the best with picks 1 & 2 value wise with the draft
Umm..

do you know what this means??

Eli's contract is what it is. "Kicking the can" would be extending him past the contract. I doubt they will do that unless Eli has a monster year and the team makes the playoffs/
The elephant in the room is obviously QB
George from PA : 3/12/2019 8:23 am : link
And if we use the #1 pick on a QB or BPA?

Defense wins chmpionships?
giantstock : 3/12/2019 8:33 am : link
What was the score between KC and New England?

What about Super Bowl Eagles vs Pats?

You need both.
Totally Agree
George from PA : 3/12/2019 8:43 am : link
I can see the Giants extending Eli for a year....and save some cap.

Give him 2 years with a decent OL and running game.....which i think the Giants feel he deserves.

Besides, I think Shurmur feels he can win with ok QB play.

Besides a RT, with the balance of offseason, will stock the defrnse with Bettcher type players

It depends on what your definition of "win" is. ANd is a 7-9 season without drafting a QB a season you'd classify as "shurmur winning?"
Winning is playoffs
George from PA : 3/12/2019 8:59 am : link
9-7 and contending for a playoff spot

It's why I tend to think Shurmur was an awful choice for coach. He'd be delusional if he thought so. GMEN have what $22m in cap space (it seems like DG keeps $10m available)?

7-9 season
Dnew15 : 3/12/2019 9:13 am : link
with no QB in the wings is the kiss of death - worst case scenario for the NYG. That's going to put this team too far from the top of the draft to get there and ramp up the "Eli isn't done" stuff so he gets extended. Especially if a majority of those wins happen towards the end of the season.

I'd very much rather the Giants build a nucleus of a young talented team, including bringing along a young QB through his growing pains, than shoot for a 9-7 season. Especially if that means outbidding teams for older players now.
George I do appreciate your optimism
mattyblue : 3/12/2019 9:46 am : link
and wish I felt the same.

One thing I completely disagree with is that the Giants “owe” Eli anything whatsoever. He has made a quarter billion dollars off them. The Patriots success has a lot to do with not owing anyone anything. Eli should be very grateful that the team has stuck with him and continued to pay him for the last few years. I don’t get this the Giants owe him stuff. How come teams can only owe Eli? There were a lot of players that had a ton of impact on those SB teams. Why didn’t we owe them?
Matty, i do not think the Giants owe Eli anything
George from PA : 3/12/2019 10:33 am : link
But I believe the Maras think they owe Eli a chance with a competent OL.

My opinion

I also think Shurmur truly believe they can win with Eli.

DG has Eli on a shorter leash but balancing between getting an bluechip edge rusher and a succession plan at QB....he will choose an edge rusher
I tend to think the difference between winning and losing is small
George from PA : 3/12/2019 10:39 am : link
Core competencies are a must.....

We have not had a competent NFL OL for 9 years. I finally think it is within reach.
