Preston Smith and Za'Darius Smith markets were both strong. Proved too rich for Giants. Za'Darius is signing with Packers and Giants are now out on Preston, per source. Barring any last-second change their search for a pass rusher will continue elsewhere.

Think Reese in 2016. I understand the frustration from Giants fans about the slow start to FA (which isn't even 24 hours old), but not diving into the deep end of FA isn't necessarily a bad thing

With the way the edge market has developed, Giants much better pursuing the likes of Shaquil Barrett and Markus Golden than paying premium prices for guys who will come in here with unrealistic expectations.

I know fans don't want to hear this, but the #Giants have actually been relatively smart at the start of free agency. This isn't a roster close to competing this year. Offense is nearly complete (sans QB) but defense is among worst in NFL. Best to sit out MEGA dollar deals.

Wise to not overpay.
This. Just so happens a lot of these guys are former cards.
Boston, Buchanon, Golden are three guys that should be pretty cheap and can help this team.

Is the answer to the Giants' defense in the Cards?
Markus Golden and Deone Bucannon both had their best years under NYG DC Bettcher when they were all in Arizona together. Free agents to watch for the Giants.
May be his former reputation, but it was predicated on the type of defense being played and what the coaches there thought about the safety position. Bettcher needs a guy, a single high safety to cover the field, tackle and be a ball-hawk. DG would be wise to be looking for that type of guy. The Giants will need a veteran safety IMO. Can't have two rookies covering the back end of the defense.
Why? Because the cap hits aren't worth it for a team that is far from being any good, at least on defense.
I wouldn't mind our signing a fairly priced, clear upgrade, for RT and FS right now cause those are two holes worth fixing. But we have "holes" everywhere.
We have to hope DT McIntosh challenges and wins the DE job over Mauro (has he re-signed?) and CB Beal is NFL ready & healthy to upgrade CB. Then you have to hope our first 2 picks are NFL ready as well, perhaps a pass rush LB like D. White and an OL in round 2.

This is me except gimme the big guy from Carolina. I watched Barkley. We all know what he would be capable of with an OL that gets him to the second level clean. It is the path of least resistance to respectability. I hate watching sucky football. Give us D Williams and let these bruisers lean on people for 2 hours and watch the Giant holes open up at the end of games.

Bucannon chose the Bucs over the Giants, per source. He obviously knows both coaching staffs well with James Bettcher in NY. Bucannon would've been an immediate starter in the Giants defense in that "moneybacker" role alongside Alec Ogletree. Didn't happen.

Told the Giants interest was mild. Gettleman just not willing to pay for safeties. Keep thinking Giants end up with a cheap vet like Kurt Coleman

The #Packers are signing former #Bears S Adrian Amos to a 4-year deal worth $37M, source said. He gets $21M in the first two years.
