Dianna Russini: Giants will not draft Haskins, no QB at 6

ryanmkeane : 3/12/2019 9:13 am
take it for what it's worth, but she was just on ESPN New York saying from team sources she has heard, QB is not in play for them this year, and they'll continue to bolster the defense through the draft, especially DL, with emphasis on OL as well if the value is there.

No clue if she is credible, but interesting to say the least

picking at #2 and #6 would
Dnew15 : 3/12/2019 9:42 am : link
make for a very interesting spot for the Giants to be in come draft time in April...
Do you take 2 edge rushers and totally re-make the defense and finally give it an identity? Do you take one edge guy and draft the best RT in the draft? Do you take a QB to develop and an edge guy? Do you take a RT and a QB to sure up the offensive side of the football and re-build the defense next year when Eli is off the books?
That would make this draft really interesting from a NYG fan perspective!

Ton of holes on this defense right now.

The pieces will be in place by next year.
If they don't like this year's qbs, then that's what they should do
Heisenberg : 3/12/2019 9:53 am : link
Personally, I love Haskins but what the hell do I know?

It sucks to kick the "next qb" can down the road but it also might be the right thing to do. Don't want to pick the next Blaine Gabbert just because Eli's old.
Isn't that what you want leaked out?
Tom from LI : 3/12/2019 9:54 am : link
if a QB is your target. Pay Eli his bonus. to make teams think next year's draft QB is your target. Resign Tanney (who can still be cut at the end of training camp.) make it look like that QB is not in the cards.

Table was set last year with the Giants telegraphing Barkley.

With all that said, I don't want Haskins or any QB this year as of right now. I want to build the D and Oline.

Dnew15 : 3/12/2019 9:56 am : link
BUT - I'm starting to come around to it.
If the Giants pick #2 (from SF) and #6 they will have a chance to reshape the entire organization moving forward.

It would also make this year's draft the most interesting in Giants history (maybe).

(I posted this on the wrong thread earlier -sorry)
Do the Giants take 2 edge rushers and re-define the defense and give it an identity? Do they take a QB and a RT and get the offense set for the next 5 years and fix the defense next year when Eli is off the books? Do they take an edge and RT? A edge and a QB?

It would certainly make this draft very interesting.

Is right, there just isn't a qb worth a top 10 pick in the draft this year. All mock drafts are need based, and not value based. As many have been saying all along, this is a weak qb class.

This is the year to build up the trenches, next year is the year to load up to get the qb you want. With the way the qb landscape may play out, a guy like Haskins may fall to the middle or back end of the first round (not suggesting it will happen, but it could be a possibility).
If that's the case
AcesUp : 3/12/2019 10:04 am : link
I would expect an extension for Eli. They'll want him under contract heading into next offseason, the Giants want him as a bridge, that much I'm sure of.

I respect the Giants decision.
The worst thing that you can do is overdraft based upon need.

If the Giants do not believe that any of the QBs are worthy of the 6th pick and there are potentially great players in another area of need, you take the best player available.

Hypothetically, how would it look if the Giants drafted Q.William, Sweat, White, or Allen and that player becomes a perennial pro bowler vs. drafting a good but not great QB.

In addition it is clear that the Giants believe that the rebuild is a multi year process. It does not matter if you select the QB this year or next year. There are so many holes to fill. A defensive player is an extreme area of need.

It's one thing to not draft Haskins or Murray because you don't believe in them as players. It is quite another to hear that, generally speaking, taking a quarterback is not in the Giants plans this offseason. The former is defensible. The latter is not. It seems to me that the organization's thought process is still very badly flawed, even if you end up at the same place as them because you don't believe specifically in Haskins or Murray.

You cant stop stupid. If this organization passes on another chance to draft a potential franchise QB, its stupid. Yes, I know. The Giants dont believe they are franchise guys. I just assume they know more than all the other teams that do. Gettleman is not the smartest guy out there, and he is going to leave this team in QB hell for a long time.

Itll be great to talk about how good the 2020 QBs are - as we watch them get selected before we draft. I hope all of you enjoy thats. What are all of you going to say next year? Too bad we cant get one? Wait til 2021? 2022? When exactly do we pull the trigger on a new QB? Are we eventually shelling out $83 million guaranteed to a guy like Cousins? People here will love that.

For you people who advocate wait til next year, just remember these conversations.
Gut feeling is that's correct.
Jim in Forest Hills : 3/12/2019 10:25 am : link
So far DG has told the truth and I think he's given us hints.

Franchise guy is a 1st rd guy.

KC Model.

I've been with Kelly, Elway, Eli and Newton, pretty good huh?

Makes sense he'd pass on Darnold, didn't think he was in that class. Does he think Haskins in that class? Unknown but doubtful.

Will look to add a dynamic DL player with #6.

I think they may restructure Eli to add one year so he can mentor the 2020 guy.

Good post. QB at #6 is not the only option. I would have a problem with Eli/Tanney/Lauletta at QB next year. The performance at the position does not warrant complacency. There are other options beyond trying to find the next John Elway, especially if you truly are embracing a rebuild. Then there are plenty of better options.

Sounds awesome, right? Look, if they dont believe Haskins is the guy, they cant take him. I get that. If the cost is too high to move up, they cant do that either. But Im starting to believe this front office has lost touch with reality. At some point you have to move on from Eli. They will kick themselves if these guys become franchise QBs and they passed up the chance to get them.

Those teams at the top of the draft will be singing Bomb for Beckham. There will be some team not needing a QB that would love to have OBJ. We get our needs taken care of and they get OBJ.

I keep reading this. So were guaranteed a top 3 selection? Well have our pick of the QBs? How exactly do you know - or can you guarantee - that we will be in a position to get one of those QBs? I mean, everyone talks about it like its a sure thing that if we wait, were guaranteed one of those guys. I want to know how that works. Can someone please tell me? I need enlightenment, because if we win 6 or 7 games next year, and pick in the 15-17 range, it may be impossible to move up. What if the teams at the top of the draft need QBs and dont want to trade? Is it that difficult to envision a scenario where the Raiders, Dolphins, Redskins, Bengals, or Broncos - 3 of them anyway - control the top 3 picks - and refuse to give them up? This team lacked a franchise QB for decades until we got Eli. But somehow you think were just getting one because we want one next year? Please stop it.

Disagree that fans are happy about that possible occurrence.

They are in a spot where they can get their guy at 6 or in a trade and they are actually trying to use misdirection for once.
If this unfolds

Depending where they have players rated that fit in the system.

1) ER - Biggest Weakness on team , whomever they have ranked highest between Sweat, Burns and the Ferrell.
2) Otherwise if you have an OT rated at a higher grade clearly above these players take the OT.
3) Same comment for 2) but LB but only if one is higher then the ER or OT

If they consider Burns or Sweat a scheme fit I like that at 6.
This is different than what came out of the both DG and PS mouths

During the combine. They talked up Qb and the KC model quite a bit. In other words, a young Qb drafted high to learn under Eli for a year.

Now obviously it doesn't guarantee we go Qb at 6 especially if the value isn't there. But I think Qb is still very much in play if Haskins is there (with Lock a darkhorse).

Thumbs? Passable.
I'm okay with no QB at #6...
bw in dc : 3/12/2019 1:18 pm : link
but do think there is going to be good QB value in round two, three, and four.

I'd hate to pass on Finley if he's there is the second round. There is a lot there to like...
I simply wonder how they are going to grab
USAF NYG Fan : 3/12/2019 1:21 pm : link
Fromm or Tua (whomever they really want) next year. Do they intend to suck this year (unlikely)? Are they going to sell away all their picks next year to move up? Are they going to give up players to move up (OBJ)?

I just can't help but feel that Fromm and Tua are going 1 and 2 next year. I know it's crazy to think that so early but that's what I keep thinking. They will have plenty of cap space but you can't really buy draft picks. Not directly anyway.

So were guaranteed a top 3 selection? Well have our pick of the QBs? How exactly do you know - or can you guarantee - that we will be in a position to get one of those QBs?
Just my opinion on what I think we're doing. Im not in the FO and I've got no guarantees.
Lets hope Haskins is there at #6 and we get a solid trade offer
SGMen : 3/12/2019 2:23 pm : link
We have a lot of holes on this team, especially on defense. If you can get a #1, #2 this year and a #2 next year (giving our #4 to them); well, do you pull the trigger if QB isn't what you want based on your value board?

In truth, I see the Giants now taking LB D. White at #6. Safe pick, versatile, fits today's NFL and is likely a game 1 starter. Pick #2 goes to OL if there is value there.

As for Eli, he finishes this contract with an 7 - 9 record, giver or take a game, and retires. Now, we have to hope QB Lauletta can step up into the starter's role in 2020 as he'll be cheap and this will be DG's and Shurmurs roster in full.
I BADLY NEEDED TO READ THIS THREAD

before commenting that DG was doing a better job than usual masking the Giants' draft intentions.

Holy swing and a miss.

No problem with it really given all that DL talent and White, but I hate the FO leaking this.

Screws any chance for a trade back.

Doesn't say we won't grab a "bargain" QB like Stidhamm in the later rounds though. Or even Jones at 37, G-d forbid. Just no QB at 6, right?
is this better for ya?
Gross Blau Oberst : 3/12/2019 4:14 pm : link

There will be some excellent defensive values on the board at #6....
Torrag : 3/12/2019 4:26 pm : link
...so if the Giants go that route with the needs we have on that side of the ball I understand that and it's a worthwhile use of the pick. No doubt about that. We should be able to add an impact defender and we sorely need those guys.

That said I don't want to hear the BS that there's no Top 10 QB worth the pick etc. There is and are. Haskins is going to be a very good NFL QB...maybe even better than that. He'll be better than guys like Foles and Flacco. Will he have a career as good as Eli and Ben? Probably depending on the organization he joins.
'I just can't help but feel that Fromm and Tua are going 1 and 2'...
Torrag : 3/12/2019 4:28 pm : link
Order aside there's a very good chance Herbert, Tua and Fromm go 1, 2, 3.

I was acquaintances with her at George Mason University. She played on the girls soccer team and I hung out with all of them. My best friend rented a house with three girls on the team and we would always hang out there. She was wild. And always loved the most popular athletes.

Cool insight 👍

Why would NYG "sources" say anything like that when they could use that pick as a bargaining chip for a trade? Say Miami/ Wash for example
