Giants Free Agency DISCUSSION Thread

Anakim : 3/12/2019 10:47 am
I mean not like there's a lot to discuss, but hey, where else can we speculate?
Heres hoping

DG has been negotiating with our future right tackle. Could/should be our one splash into free agency.....
I really hope we get a right tackle.
Essex : 3/12/2019 10:52 am : link
We need to build our defense and we only have three draft picks in the first four rounds, so assuming we don't draft a qb, I was hoping we would devote our draft resources to defense.

I hope not. Not that Daryl Williams wouldn't solidify the O-Line, but look at our defense. It's barren. We have Jackrabbit on the wrong side of 30, Ogletree who is inconsistent and a bunch of whos?
still a lot of names out there with cap space hopefully drying up

OL - Williams, Remmers

DB - Clinton Dix, Boston, Nelson, Desir, Roby, Verrett

Edge - Barrett, Houston, Golden
Totally agree
Lionhart28 : 3/12/2019 10:53 am : link
The only position I'd be willing to spend serious FA money on is RT. Go defense (or QB) all draft for the next couple of years.
Clinton Dix was a BUST in DC after the trade last year.

and most of that grade is based on them sitting out this insane market. Add in the pre-FA swap of OV for Zeitler and this has been we played.

If they can get Williams at a price they like, even better.

I expect them to jump back into FA after the first wave to address some holes/depth on defense
Giants just don't have the cap space to make

more than one big signing.

but then teams are going to wait it out. The likes of the Giants etc, have been burned once (maybe twice with Solder) and are willing to get the 'Who's' Anakin referenced to build the team. Paying big bucks for mediocre players gets you into trouble. if you can avoid it then wait for the deals...

i'd be ok with williams at RT if healthy
GiantsFan84 : 3/12/2019 11:03 am : link
then you can draft a C in rd 2 and let halapio and pulley go after this year. this sets the OL for years to come and has the offense ready made for next years rookie QB

draft defense pretty much the rest of the draft including at pick 6. play the kids on D this year and then next year there will be a ton of cap space to use to supplement the D with the dead money, eli, ellison, and martin gone and jenkins likely to go as well assuming beal is the real deal

the key to this offseason is just to not give out bad contracts and don't screw up the draft
Nothing to discuss. Its more like speculation.
The_Boss : 3/12/2019 11:04 am : link
Heres something to ponder:
If it appears DG is tearing this thing down to the foundation, other than his $23 million, why the heck would Eli want to be a part of what looks to be a throw away year? And if it is indeed a throw away year, buckle up for the Odell Beckham experience. I would think hed be a pain in the balls all year.

Agreed. We don't have a lot to work with this year. Arguably on defense Betcher needs scheme fits more then superstars. And honestly what % of the cap are you going to allocate to OL? They already have 2 OL making north of $10mm.

Go draft a pass rusher rd1 and a RT rd2 and use the rest of the draft capital on Betcher's scheme fits.

Sign guys that fit the scheme that are reasonable. Better signing 3 $5mm players then 1 $15mm player.

That Zeitler trade looks pretty genius right now. Zeitler would probably get 20 million a year if he were available in this market, 12 looks fantastic for the next few years. Thats just slightly above Bobby Hart $$

Problem is you now need a WR, especially with Shepard entering the last year of his deal and going by some of the WR contracts this year, he's easily getting $10M+ next offseason. And it's reportedly not a very good WR draft.

I wouldn't say he doesn't value DBs as Jenkins is still here.

Other than Amos, I'm glad he's avoided the other safeties as the only ones I'd even consider giving >$12M per year to are Harrison Smith and Eric Berry and neither are available. Maybe Thomas if he was a few years younger and not coming off a major injury.

Gross Blau Oberst : 3/12/2019 11:52 am : link
Sign the biggest names for the biggest $$. Often more than the on field value. That is a sign of desperation.

The Giants, for the first time in a while, are not moving early, not spending big. Not making a big splash move.

For the casual fan, that is ominous and causes some to opine the the GM is not doing their job.

In fact, the GM is doing his job well by not going for the big splash this year. This is not the Giants of old who needed one or two players for a SB run.

The salary cap causes teams to be judicious with the $$ they allocate.

The teams making the big splashes are either sitting on excessive cap space (from not paying out in years past to drafted or free agent acquired players) or believe they are close to making a super bowl run.

In either case, the NYG are not Big Splash worthy in 2019.

The Giants are entering year two of a 3 year rebuild and will be selective on who they sign in Free Agency and for how much. The wallet is not that deep this year.

Poor drafting and poor contract management is still a large obstacle for the 2nd year GM to overcome and correct.

Patience is needed by fans - something that NYers are often in short supply of.

Plus, don't drink the kool-aid of the articles written in the press / media. They are designed to attract readers and generate interest / discussion / clicks for market share. Few beat writers have any true insights, or even a basic understanding of the Capologist implications of the NYG current and future contracts.

The media articles and articles are almost "fantasy football" level of truly understanding reality. All too often the readers get sucked into believing what the writers create.
If DG gets Daryl Williams

Problem is you now need a WR, especially with Shepard entering the last year of his deal and going by some of the WR contracts this year, he's easily getting $10M+ next offseason. And it's reportedly not a very good WR draft.

Hakeem Butler Iowa state, Deebo Samuel could be second round guys?

All on board with trading Odell for San Fran 2 and 36

With those four picks Id take
1. Quinnen Williams DT
2. Devin White LB
3. Dalton Risner G/T/C
4. Noah Fant TE if he falls. Go to a two TE set with Engram and Fant like the Pats did

I was torn between bosa and Williams but picked bosa purely on need for edge. Like risner also. Fant wont get out of the second round imo

Instead of, I'm guessing Williams hasn't signed yet because teams want to see how the rehab knee looks. They can't do that until FA officially begins.

Can't they get medical records from the player? I'm sure the agents know which Drs a team trusts and could have them do a physical.

You just listed 3 reasons he would be a terrible fit.
Why should we panic?
Doomster : 3/12/2019 12:59 pm : link
This team is not ready for Prime time yet.....there are no great expectations....

If we can get set on the OL, and avoid injuries, this offense will score some points....

We need either a functional RT from free agency(I do not want to be spending big bucks here) or one from the draft.....we need an upgrade over Halapio....why in the world we gave 9M to Pulley, is a head scratcher....

This team is not a contender for a title, but it could be, at least, enjoyable to watch......our defense sucked last year, and yet we lost 8 of 11 by 7 points or less.....Score points, make the other team one dimensional, and make life easier for our defense....maybe even play some meaningful December games....
edge rusher is certainly the biggest hole on the team at the moment
Eric on Li : 3/12/2019 1:00 pm : link
Daryl Williams would be my first choice for the obvious reasons, that he's young and he has pro bowl ability to solidify the OL for multiple seasons - but i'd imagine there's some urgency to get some edge rushers who fit the scheme in the building. Golden is the most obvious, Shaq Barrett is intriguing. Houston is the most proven but probably too old. I wonder if they'd even gamble on a reclamation project like Shane Ray.

DG's stated philosophy is run the ball, stop the run, rush the passer. Of course he doesn't value DBs that highly.

JPP figures to be gone in TB with his contract and potentially poor fit in the new scheme. A team like the Colts, Bills, 49ers, Panthers should be trying to get him for a trade back on Day 3.

As a JPP fan, despite his big cap hit they really like him in Tampa Bay. He had a strong all-around year. Besides the 12.5 sacks he had 20 QB knockdowns and 16 tackles for losses.

The outlook of this defense would be a little darker without his presence. This, and the fact he outplayed his positional pay ranking in every significant statistical category, make JPP an easy call as a bargain for the 2018 Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

By the end, he was clearly a leader on the field and in the locker room.

Maybe the change in scenery was good for him.

What has Beal shown us to call him a NYG defensive building block..?

Hill, ok maybe. Carter? I'm optimistic about him but he hasn't shown that he is irreplaceable going forward after just one year.. I would argue that we have Zero building blocks on defense and need to get one at 6 so we can build around that player... hard to call three 3rd round picks builidng blocks, after one year in which none of them really dominated.. not that that what was expected of them or of any player taken after the top half of round 1...

Hill was pretty good last year. Carter was solid when he was able to see the field... thought we would see more of him early with OV hurt but we didnt really, but we saw a glimpse or a flash here and there... Beal had what? One practice? Let's not get ahead of ourselves by calling Beal or even Carter a building block. If you want to sip the BJ Hill kool-aid, fine, pour me a cup too. But the fact is, this defense as it currently stands, doesnt have ANY proven playmakers outside of a decling Jack Rabbit.

Devin White. Josh Allen. Nick Bosa. Quinnen Williams. Greedy Williams. Those are what I would call building blocks. And we should probably take one at 6.

I disagree.. Eric berry has played in like 5 of KC's last 30 games or something like that.. they brought in Mathieu so they dont have to keep counting on Berry. They are similar players, versatile yes, but similar and both better suited at strong safety.

Berry is now a luxury and not a necessity. They can't plan on making Mathieu (hasn't missed a game in 17' or 18') a tandem with a guy that has played in just 3 games in 2017 and 2018! Mathieu is now 'the guy' over there. They can put a Curtis Riley back there with him (JK, hopefully they can do better than that)... I bet if his cap hit wasnt so horrible this year they would cut him to free up cap next year... I'm sure they would listen to offers as no one in the league is untouchable from the right offer and I doubt he would cost something crazy is all...
