BTW- Amtoft, I don't mean you - just citing that bit you posted about Bethea - clearly he still had some legs last year.
I doubt he's going to be worse than any of the non-Collins safeties we've deployed here lately. At least he'll know what he's doing.
It can't be about me... I like the signing. Depending on the cost of course. I posted that because even at his age to play that many snaps means he wasn't slowing down at the end of the game. That is a good thing.

Agree.
I don't really like PFF - but even last year, he was still in the "average" range by their measure and his coverage was still solid. So, can't really use PFF to knock him much - they don't say he was bad.
I don't know why this is a bad signing at all, really... I'm guessing it's a year or two, won't put a dent in our chances at a comp pick for Collins, IIRC.
We can't fill every hole through the draft.
We've also had some good fortune with older vet DB's in the past... Madison, McQuarters, Grant...
I am shocked (and disappointed) at some of the responses to this post. We have a millions spots to fill and we need guys to guide incoming rookies. This guy seems to have good stats and health to boot. The only way I could get upset is if they overpaid.
I wonder how many people complaining are basing their critique on his actual performance?
DG signed Bethea to be a mentor and locker room guy. Stewart 2.0.
You’re annoying.
You don’t want to over spend. You don’t want to lose the comp picks... well.... this is how it works. This is what the precious pats do.
This is the pattern. Sign old vet to mentor new rookie. What's the issue?
These steaming takes just keep getting worse... good lord.
So vets don't mentor rookies in the NFL?
Which rookie is he mentoring?
This is nothing like Jonathan Stewart - Bethea was actually productive last year and is being brought here to start, and play. Not carry the ball 2 times a game and be a beacon of light in the locker room.
Any other shitty takes you want to throw out there?
we don't have a lot of salary cap, the market is stupid hot and we don't have enough draft choices to completely rebuild the team. So a relatively cheap veteran who still can play to fill one of our holes is somehow a bad thing.
Guy is a stopgap for the future. Nothing wrong with that.

True or false, vets mentor rookies.
True or false, Jonathon Stewart was brought in last year to be a stabilizing locker room presence.
Also true, it wasn't necessary, unless you want to attribute a player the entire world knew was great to having a successful season because good ol' J-Stew was there for him on the bench.
it ain't the same thing. Stewart was brought in to help in the locker room, it looks like Bethea is coming to start. Maybe a draft pick changes that, but it will be with his help. Besides Bethea is the age now that Andrew Whitworth was when he wasn't brought here, and many here were willing to overlook his age.
-Neither had an interception
-Both had 1 Forced Fumble
-Bethea had 3 sacks, Collins had 0
-Bethea had 100 solo tackles and 21 assists to Collins 67 solo tackles and 29 assists. Honestly, I would expect the SS to be higher in this category.
-Both had 5 tackles for loss
-Bethea had 6 QB hits and Collings had 2 QB hits
-Collins missed 4 games so that skews the stats a little
-All of Collins stats have declined since his 2016 year
-Outside of interceptions, Bethea had his best year last year
-Bethea was listed as a FS last year but has played both FS and SS throughout his career. Collins has been predominantly listed as a SS.
I get that he's older but, depending on the cost, I think it's a great pickup. He's a placeholder for now but a pretty good placeholder. A veteran on what will be a young defense that can still play.
with pretty good speed so his aging might not be that bad. he was a 4.39 guy when drafted. if he's 4.6 or so now, w/experience and football IQ - could work for year or two.
Night and day, difference. Clearly upgraded the secondary. Most important, you have a player on the field who can QB the secondary. Haven't had that in a while.
tho USAF's post above mentioned some of the same stats:
Quote:
But where Bethea really beats out other safeties is when he’s called upon to blitz or rush the passer. PFF had him leading all league safeties with a 17.9 pass-rush productivity rating, which included 12 pressures, six hurries, three hits, three sacks on 42 pass-rush snaps
Obviously it's not everything especially when age is a factor, but this was re: 2018 so that's added value given our pass rush issues
We have nothing on defense. Even at 35, he may be our best defensive player in 2019.
That's a sobering, true statement.
At least we got our locker room signing out of the way.
I doubt he's going to be worse than any of the non-Collins safeties we've deployed here lately. At least he'll know what he's doing.

I don't really have any issue with this.
"At the end of the day..."
Because he slipped by on the senior bus
If it's costing us any kind of real money it's an annoying signing IMO.

Mentor is a word.
Like the guard signing as well.
Expect to see both interior and exterior front 7 er's drafted and maybe even a few safeties.

Antoine Bethea is so old the Dead Sea was still alive when he started playing.
He is so old ... he and Aaron Ross could be twins.

He is so old, that he was born on Pangaea, and fought off T-Rexes with just a stick.

...this signing?
At 4:35 I responded to your post and said 2017 (Bettcher's last year in AZ when they were still running a 3-4)

wake up sleepy jonc - could be worse - ( New Window )
and he gets the collision aspect of football.
Beal, Jenkins and Haley at CB. We are not done adding players.
In coverage terms, we have a huge upgrade at the back end of our defence.
