Raanan: Bucannon chose Bucs over Giants

Bucannon chose the Bucs over the Giants, per source. He obviously knows both coaching staffs well with James Bettcher in NY. Bucannon would've been an immediate starter in the Giants defense in that "moneybacker" role alongside Alec Ogletree. Didn't happen.

JPP and McCoy and ???

over Tomlinson, BJ Hill, and ??

In terms of the folks in front of him. Going into next year, I'd rather have Tomlinson at NG in front of me than McCoy if I'm in an ILB role.

Maybe he chose weather and the state and local taxes in FL over NJ or NY.
seems like he went Arians/Bowles (who drafted him) > Shurmur/Betcher
Eric on Li : 3/12/2019 5:48 pm : link
if I was gambling on 1 year to maximize my value, I don't think that's an insane decision. Not that Arians or Bowles had anything to do with it, but Kwon Alexander just got paid more than every LB who has ever left our organization combined. Considering where our defensive personnel are currently, TB has to be in better shape.

Good call - also wouldn't factor into the comp pick formula.

The Bucs were the worst defense in the NFL according to fo.com and allowed 50+ more points than the Giants.

Not sure this logic works here.... he's going to greener pastures in... Tampa Bay?

1 winning season since 2010?

I know it's fun and trendy to just trash everything about the Giants now, but... this is a bad take.

Considering a bunch of players were trashing DG for letting Collins go on Twitter yesterday (which I was fine with, except for not getting something back for him), I just don't think many players want to play here right now, unless it's for a monster offer. Players talk. It shouldn't be a big shock, or anything.

So because he sounds good in the media that means he’d be a great hire? Why hasn’t anyone else hired him?

And... they want to play for TB more, why?

Look at Tampa's last handful of seasons. They've finished dead last 7 of the last 8 years in their division. You think it's bad here?

Their coach just got fired, there's no semblance of anything more promising going on there than there is here.

There aren't many teams I can say the Giants have done a better job than lately... but Tampa is probably one of them.

It probably has more to do with taxes and weather than anything else. Not everything has to be an indictment on the Giants.

Why does that make him a good hire? There’s plenty of successful scouts out there. That doesn’t mean they’d all be good GMs.

If Riddick ran this team based on his Giants commentary the last few years, they’d be in worse shape than they are right now.
So not even the “cheaper” 2nd wave FA’s want to come here?

Tampa isn’t going anywhere either. Taxes sure. But we have no idea what each offer was. My guess Tampa was a better dollar deal. Winston isn’t leading that team anywhere

He's a smart, universally respected guy with an impressive history in the game as a player, scout, director of pro personnel, and member of the media. He'd have provided a fresh perspective that this team sorely needs. If you need any further explanation it's because you had your opinion made up before you asked me the question.

You don’t know that at all. There was an article back in August where one of the beats did a lengthy interview with Riddick. What makes me think he’d be a better choice than DG was he said he flat out told Mara that Eli is done. Based on what’s transpired here, are we confident DG was equally blunt to Mara in the interview process? I’m not. Riddick, unfortunately had no shot here anyway. DG’s hire was a fait accompli.

That with the difference in taxes that Florida and Texas don't clean up in FA I mean it could a huge difference in money especially on these short deals

Riddick’s vision for the Giants was eerily similar to Reese. That’s not how I want this team “rebuilt.” A new QB with a shit roster building philosophy is just another 10-15 years (maybe more) of the same.
