I was as shocked as anyone when I saw th pinned thread. And the compensation gives me pause. Beckham is a great player and I loved watching him play. However...
"No guts no glory"
DG said this himself and there's no denying, the guts are there. There's something to be said about the balls it takes to make a move like this. You know it's gonna be unpopular. You know it's gonna be a large part of your legacy and if you are in fact wrong, you're never gonna live it down. And you pull the trigger anyway. Im shocked and part of me is bummed he's gone but fuck it, I'm in.
Let's see what happens. What else does this mad man have in store? Couldn't be worse than the last few years, right? Who knows, maybe this is the collective BBI's "WHY IS TYREE IN THERE?!?!?" moment (sorry Anak) and the turnaround will be traced to this date. If you don't think it's possible you're kidding yourself. This team was good before Beckham. It will be good after him. And to be honest, it was never actually very good with him. Now that may not be his fault, but going in a different direction may be what's needed,
Anyone else interested in talking about where this is headed instead of just bitching? Check in here
Expect the Daniel Jones love to heat up.
So far, I've only really gotten shit for the baseball team I root for and a lot of posters talking over each other about how the Giants are now the worst team in the history of professional sports.
I think we probably made the right football move today.
I've always loved watching Beckham play, had always hoped he'd get to win here, but obviously whatever was going on behind the scenes wasn't going to work itself out and wasn't worth the headache.
I still really hope we cut bait on Eli and use the cap space to bolster other parts of the team and either swing a trade for Rosen or take our guy in the draft. I have to see where we go with the QB spot.
But long-term, I think this made sense.
If Gettleman has to be the bad guy, so be it.

Or any other QB in this draft.

Fuck that.
Maybe it's a completely different plan than what DG had when he took the job, but the two worst things he could do were to commit to a failing vision, or refuse to change course.
Can you?
At least 2019 won't be the same team.
LET'S GO.
Can you?
NOTHING is off the table. Buckle up!
This is Barkley, hand the ball to the ref, act like you have been there before team now. We are going old school with big oline, best rb, and now lets build the d.
This is the most patriot style operation that we have seen.
We lost with OBJ, we can lose without him.
I am still in shock and it sucks it didnt work out with OBJ but this was the right move for this franchise today.
Also, call me a get off your lawn type but I have to be honest, it will be much more enjoyable being able to follow this franchise without the constant OBJ drama. Its not all his fault, a lot of it was the media, but make no mistake. It is/was CONSTANT!

Even as a big fan of the player, it was exhausting.
Part of me feels honest relief.

I'd like this more if they cut Eli. They're like companion moves. This is a clear indication you're rebuilding, despite saying all the "right" things in the press. There's no dipping your toe in this pool, you gotta just jump in.
Nobody is tuning out the Giants over this move, regardless of what their emotions are causing them to say.
Go Giants
Cmon man have some class. BBI is a family corner forum.

LOLOL I just snorted a Coke in through my nostrils and choked on it. Great post and thanks we're all a little on edge and needed that. Still laughing....

This made me giggle.
I still am just a bit in shock. But he also bet me O'Dell was going to be looking for more guaranteed money and soon. Then I saw this
"They are already talking contract upgrade in Cleveland. Good luck Browns. You will need it."

I dunno, this might've broken some people lol. And just wait til Beckham goes for 200 and 2 scores and eclipses our entire passing offense one Sunday next fall. It's gonna be unbearable lol.

That was a Francessa tweet ^^
Old calculator head in Foxboro would say: Future risk adjusted return on a small, quicks and cuts based WR with lots of leg injuries and who missed 25% of the games over the last five years ( played in 59 out of sixty games) is at least a debate.
The return could be 4 players. A better than average safety plus two draft picks plus the cap room to add one more very good FA.
The poor return for Collins was a mistake. Not signing OBJ would have been a round 3 comp pick?
The emotional whipsaw that fans ride during a turnaround and memories of better times gets in the way but better a rebuild than ignoring a rebuild
If he flips this into two elite pass rushers, which is certainly possible, no one will lament this trade.
There are a ton of realistic scenarios where the Giants end up with two great players, guys that win you championships, at 6 and 17.
Good post. We really do need 2 decent WRs now, that's the only thing scary to me.
First order of business is getting a mailing list together, cuz fuck the internet. After that we slander any draft prospect with a sizeable social media presence (this might require social media use). After that we go after Goodell. That smug prick has embraced technology and expansion for about as long as I'm willing to take it.
I think there's a decent chance you don't.
Great posts, jrud and Joey. This trade allows us to potentially restock the roster, make it younger, acquire our QB of the future, AND develop some depth.
This is the New England model, in a sense. No one gets more bucks than they deserve, no one is bigger than the team, almost anyone can be replaced (if you have enough picks to either make or trade) and outside WRs are less important than slot guys and the TE; own the middle of the field.
I loved Odell, but a great receiver and a great running back will not win in the nfl if we dont have have o line and d line. Without this trade, by the time we built up our o line and d line Beckham would be in his 7th or 8th year. This speeds up the process of potentially making us a winner again.

Dallas actually struggled badly before they landed Cooper and Alshon Jeffery was the guy taking up the largest chunk of cap space on the Eagles' SB team from 2 years ago - so, this isn't entirely true.
Don't be fooled into thinking WR isn't a massive, massive need now - it is. We might have the worst group in the NFL if not close.
Maybe they really like Coleman going into his 2nd year here - but that's not something I'd be banking on.
The FA WR group is bad, too.
We're going to have to hit on one in the draft - and hopefully it's not another Devin Funchess.
What I am somewhat disappointed with is the return...would REALLY have liked to have a 2nd rounder added to the haul, especially because that 3rd rounder is the last pick in the round. But too late to turn back now. Looking forward, really really hoping we use both 1's on actual players and that the rumors of a trade up for a QB are false. If either Haskins or Murray drops to 6..fine. But I dont like the idea of trading up for either of them. If they are gone, oh well....wait till next year for a QB. And no more mid-late round QB projects!
The going got tough, Odell sat out the last 4 games. JT obviously has good intel. If he said that Odell milked that injury, i believe him.
I give Terps credit for sticking to his guns. Honestly, i've been in that camp for some time now but i didn't have the balls to admit it was time to trade him.
The reality is, no one is above the team. No one is above the culture. Whether you like DG or not, i think his vision is starting to take place.
In a weird way, i think this had to happen. Both parties needed to move their separate ways. I wish him luck in Cleveland. He's a good dude....but i am AMPED this team is getting away from TMZ drama and getting back to smash mouth bully ball.
Still fully in the Gettleman camp. Coach and GM need 3 years for their vision to take shape. He fucks the draft up, we'll talk then.
Well - it's nice to have all you guys in one thread. It'll be easier to have some things to laugh about during the dark times ahead when the management of this team have completed running the whole damn thing into the ground.
Let's just hope that Philly, Dallas or Washington don't win another SB in that timeframe, although with a patsy like the Giants in the division it's going to make things easier on them.
The pressure is on now. Make those picks count. Peppers being good is gravy. Gettleman showed hes good with drafting. That gives me hope he can do it again, only this time with multiple first rounders. Thats something to look forward to and be excited about.
J_rud, Im in.

I don't think being measured in my reaction and saying I'll hope for the best is anything that will ever come back to haunt me. Showing my ass and acting like a jilted 14 year old girl, on the other hand...
Can you?
Why cant you? Lets say the giants are in full rebuild mode even though Im not sure that they are, but for the sake of argument lets say they are why cant you keep Eli and let his money come off the books entirely next year? If youre in rebuild mode this year youre not spending much this year anyway. It appears the giants want to sit out big FA anyway, so whats the harm in just letting Eli expire organically here and spending the money and cap next year if and when?
Why is Eli considered a fucking leper? Why do we HAVE to cut him now when there isnt even a young qb worth a shit on the roster?
Ill never get it. Giants fans and this mob mentality with Eli jusg having to go, even at all costs. He just HAS to go and ASAP!!! Why?? Hes not holding anyone back yet. Fucking relax.
So lets not do the right thing? Lets just try to lose then. Beckham is throwing up smoke signals for months if not years that things could get ugly here but hey! We suck! So lets just try and suck and not try and make moves that help this franchise progress out of the doldrums.
You guys need to move past 2013-2017. Its done.

We have Dave Gettleman and Pat Shurmur. So, yeah, keep telling me about "the New England model".

The same as youd get for suggesting ardent support or even a "well Im bummed but Ill go on the ride". Kinda like politics. Most people resort to angrily belittling those with different views. Neither side is cleaner than the other.
That would be a better, clearer direction than whatever the hell the 2018 and 2019 offseasons have been. Because so far it's been nothing but half measures and mixed signals.

Especially after a bad 7 years. 'Stay positive', though. Can I see one season worth of evidence before I wipe the slate clean from 7 bad seasons? I think that's pretty damn fair when you look at it..

I don't believe this is a matter of opposing views. Team's been bad for most of a decade. The people hired to fix it have no track record to support a benefit of the doubt. It's more understandable and makes more sense to be skeptical. Putting a happy face on it is purely a defense mechanism because what else can you do?

To be fair i think we're seeing some different things. Clearly a different drafting philosophy. New regime makes changes much quicker when things arent working. Tbeuve made an effort to get out from under bad contracts. Theyre not handing out more bad contracts.
Do i like where the team is at? Of course not. Does it make me a sucker to try to be positive about the direction they're headed? Maybe. I just choose to try to be positive.
