F*ck it, I'm in

j_rud : 3/12/2019 9:28 pm
I was as shocked as anyone when I saw th pinned thread. And the compensation gives me pause. Beckham is a great player and I loved watching him play. However...

"No guts no glory"

DG said this himself and there's no denying, the guts are there. There's something to be said about the balls it takes to make a move like this. You know it's gonna be unpopular. You know it's gonna be a large part of your legacy and if you are in fact wrong, you're never gonna live it down. And you pull the trigger anyway. Im shocked and part of me is bummed he's gone but fuck it, I'm in.

Let's see what happens. What else does this mad man have in store? Couldn't be worse than the last few years, right? Who knows, maybe this is the collective BBI's "WHY IS TYREE IN THERE?!?!?" moment (sorry Anak) and the turnaround will be traced to this date. If you don't think it's possible you're kidding yourself. This team was good before Beckham. It will be good after him. And to be honest, it was never actually very good with him. Now that may not be his fault, but going in a different direction may be what's needed,

Anyone else interested in talking about where this is headed instead of just bitching? Check in here

We added a first and a 3rd and a starting safety. That's good. We traded Odell. That's bad. The frogurt comes free with any purchase. That's good! We have more draft picks, we nabbed a young athletic SS to replace the $84 million man and we had an excellent draft last year. We have a long way to go, but we are amassing picks and we have a GM with a good eye for talent who understands that the lines are the key to winning. It's weird right now but we have to move on and see what we have. It's exciting, a little scary but to me, exciting.
Im with you.

DG seems to have a plan and its good to see him not afraid to make the hard decisions. Hes plugging holes as they arise. Peppers fills the loss of Collins. And we have two first round picks and a late third. Two picks we didnt have before. The best guard in the NFL. And a new young team being out together. Lets see where this goes. Im excited. We sucked anyway!

I've been trying.

So far, I've only really gotten shit for the baseball team I root for and a lot of posters talking over each other about how the Giants are now the worst team in the history of professional sports.

I think we probably made the right football move today.

I've always loved watching Beckham play, had always hoped he'd get to win here, but obviously whatever was going on behind the scenes wasn't going to work itself out and wasn't worth the headache.

I still really hope we cut bait on Eli and use the cap space to bolster other parts of the team and either swing a trade for Rosen or take our guy in the draft. I have to see where we go with the QB spot.

But long-term, I think this made sense.

If Gettleman has to be the bad guy, so be it.

They better go all in and cut Eli.
Dave in Hoboken : 3/12/2019 9:32 pm : link
Sticking with Eli with what will be an awful team and paying him all that money makes zero sense.
Im not going to lose my mind over this.

Not really a fan of the return right now but Im reserving judgement until after the draft.
I'm sorta of the mindset that
BlackLight : 3/12/2019 9:32 pm : link
given how incomprehensible the move seems, only on its face, there must a be a good reason for it, or a plan.

Maybe it's a completely different plan than what DG had when he took the job, but the two worst things he could do were to commit to a failing vision, or refuse to change course.

This team had 75% of its salary cap invested in the offense. That imbalance will NOT win a championship. Getting OBJ's salary out of here was necessary (at some point). Brown set the market (sort of) by only netting a 3rd and 5th. With Beckham's salary, a 1, 3 and a former 1st rounder who will start at SS isn't bad. It hurts but assuming the 17th pick is a cornerstone player, this will help in the long run. You need your GM to have guts and have a plan and stick to it. So far, Gettleman has (we just don't like losing a player like OBJ, but its best for the franchise.)
I don't think Eli goes anywhere
Joey in VA : 3/12/2019 9:34 pm : link
He gets his final year, gets his $, teaches the kids and rides off into the sunset. Someone has to play QB. Of course today I was 100% sure Odell was staying so wtf do I know?

I dont know why but I am not. Not mad about the tradejust wish we got a second as well.

This is Barkley, hand the ball to the ref, act like you have been there before team now. We are going old school with big oline, best rb, and now lets build the d.

This is the most patriot style operation that we have seen.
I Love It!

We lost with OBJ, we can lose without him.

One more bad year and more drama (and possibly another injury) and youre getting closer to what the Steelers got for AB instead of what we got today.

I am still in shock and it sucks it didnt work out with OBJ but this was the right move for this franchise today.

Also, call me a get off your lawn type but I have to be honest, it will be much more enjoyable being able to follow this franchise without the constant OBJ drama. Its not all his fault, a lot of it was the media, but make no mistake. It is/was CONSTANT!
We all root for the laundry

I'd like this more if they cut Eli. They're like companion moves. This is a clear indication you're rebuilding, despite saying all the "right" things in the press. There's no dipping your toe in this pool, you gotta just jump in.

Spoke immediately after trade was announced. Very outspoken person and he loves what the Giants did but he's always been that guy who thinks a star WR or RB are unnecessary, especially on a 2nd contract.

I still am just a bit in shock. But he also bet me O'Dell was going to be looking for more guaranteed money and soon. Then I saw this

"They are already talking contract upgrade in Cleveland. Good luck Browns. You will need it."

I dunno, this might've broken some people lol. And just wait til Beckham goes for 200 and 2 scores and eclipses our entire passing offense one Sunday next fall. It's gonna be unbearable lol.

and wish they could have gotten an extra pick..but thats still a good haul for a single player. But if the reports about him demanding more money are true then I cant blame them for getting rid of him now. The team needed a blood letting and sure is happening, just hope they hit on these draft picks. If not for Barkley Ive almost lost all interest in the NFL.

Loved the highlights. Didn't care one way or another about the social media type stuff

Old calculator head in Foxboro would say: Future risk adjusted return on a small, quicks and cuts based WR with lots of leg injuries and who missed 25% of the games over the last five years ( played in 59 out of sixty games) is at least a debate.

The return could be 4 players. A better than average safety plus two draft picks plus the cap room to add one more very good FA.

The poor return for Collins was a mistake. Not signing OBJ would have been a round 3 comp pick?

The emotional whipsaw that fans ride during a turnaround and memories of better times gets in the way but better a rebuild than ignoring a rebuild

Count me in
Des51 : 3/12/2019 9:52 pm : link
I wish they could've gotten more, but we just don't know what was going on behind the scene. I think if they waited another year, then this would've been another AB situation, and he'd be gone for peanuts.
I like what DG has done
WillVAB : 3/12/2019 9:58 pm : link
Unfortunately this is going to come down to what he gets out of the picks.

If he flips this into two elite pass rushers, which is certainly possible, no one will lament this trade.

There are a ton of realistic scenarios where the Giants end up with two great players, guys that win you championships, at 6 and 17.

First order of business is getting a mailing list together, cuz fuck the internet. After that we slander any draft prospect with a sizeable social media presence (this might require social media use). After that we go after Goodell. That smug prick has embraced technology and expansion for about as long as I'm willing to take it.
