OBJ- What we don’t know?

Bavaro_the_Mafioso : 3/12/2019 11:04 pm
Still trying to wrap my head around this but is the ankle still an issue? What about those ill-timed IVs during games? The mysterious quad injury?

Speculative but perhaps a lot more than little Wayne, Twitter, and jabs with Mara...

What happening is a culture change, the nail on OBJ's coffin was his ill adviced public interview with little Wayne after receiving a humongous contract from the Giants organization. Also, the production on the field lacked explosiveness and again the missed games. In the offseason, he revs up the rhetoric rather than solidify his commitment to the franchise. We need to think about the state of the team, we lose a 2nd round Probowl box safety and replace him with a 1st round better-rounded safety plus a first round pick and a 3rd which we lost due to acquiring Beal in the supplemental draft. This draft is deep in Defensive prospects, also there are some interesting receivers.

If we are Giants fans we should be about the franchise, not the individual player. OBJ had a shot to create a legacy in 2016, what did he do with it? Forget about the trip to Miami, how did he perform during the playoff game? Eli was true to form, making throws trying to will the team to victory OBJ and his compadres SHIT THE BED!!! No apologies, just more immature antics. The Giants Franchise bend over backward to make him feel wanted and it wasn't enough for him to mature and become a man committing to his word and acting honorably.

It saddens me that it came to this, I really thought OBJ could handle sharing the spotlight SB but it was not to be. As great as OBJ is he is not LT, HC, MS, JT, PS, MB, RH, and many more men who took honor and pride playing for the Giants Franchise, while rewarding the fans by winning championships for them. History will remember OBJ as a star receiver for the New York Football Giants but, OBJ will never be remembered as a Giant great. That should be what this is about, not one man but one team. It is about the legacy of The New York Football Giants, people.

Still doesn’t mean we as fans have to be happy or buy the bullshit the Giants tried to sell. The 17th and 95th pick, along with a mediocre safety is hardly what could be considered as the ransom they were supposedly asking for.

We all know Eli is still here because - right or wrong - the organization feels it owes it to him and can still win with him. Manning has two Super Bowl MVPs.

Beckham has played on one winning football team in the NFL.

But the giants had little to no choice here and if you can’t see that they did their due diligence here you’re blind. So many miserable takes and many are going after DG and the giants as if they were caught with their pants down, as usual. Save that shit. Read the tea leaves here over the last year. The giants knew exactly what they were doing. They exhausted every means necessary with Beckham to make this work in NY. Beckham tried like hell to make things dicey here. Well, you got your wish there Odell.

You don’t have to like the trade but I don’t think it’s fair to blame the giants here. They tried like hell to make this work with Beckham. I think that’s clear. And they didn’t take the first offer or under sell Beckham and it’s flat out weird to think otherwise.

Fix the defense. Even if it had to come ad Odell’s expense. I can’t take the days of NYG shitty defense and shitty football anymore. Drastic measures were needed. Good for DG for selling Beckham a year too early rather than a year too late. Now fix the D.

And don’t worry about qb, it’s going to be addressed sooner than later. Relax it will come.
How clutch was Beckham?

I haven't watched many games the past few years- moved out of state, kids, and job always seem to get in the way. The games I did watch always frustrated me. It seemed that OBJ, as great as he was, didn't seem to come through on the goal line or in those 3rd and 7 situations. That may very well be due to a crap offense overall but I got the impression that he really wasn't making things happen when we really needed it.

Again, I have not watched that many games so I may very well be way off base but is this something that others have noticed?
Yes, it’s clear he wanted out
ArlingtonMike : 3/12/2019 11:23 pm : link
He played us and got exactly he wanted. Which just rubs salt in the wound. He forced his way out which likely contributed to the brass accepting an offer that previously would not have been accepted.

Odell is Odell and has been since 2014. A diva superstar. Nothing about his behavior surprised me including his asanine interview and other antics. If they had an issue with his persona and behavior, they never should have invested in him and sold high last year.

What a waste. Mismanaged from the start, beginning with Coughlin letting him self destruct and do nothing against Carolina.

Which was based on his interview with Lil Wayne I believe. His final thoughts on it were, IIRC, he was where he was and was happy to be there and playing football, or something to that respect.

He himself never once actually said he’d rather be somewhere else.

So tough guy GM takes a talented guy and gives him away because he films an interview with a rapper where he's unhappy with his situation?

Did OBJ demand a trade? Did he hold out? Did he somehow half-ass his rehab or his effort?

Face it - Gettleman's awfully good at cutting and trading people. It's the part about actually building a team that we haven't seen yet. His tenure in CAR was mostly due to his predecessor, and he was run out of town for his handling of his players. His FA performance last year was horrendous. His handling of Collins was comical.

OBJ is gone. We got a lousy return, and lost a ton of cap space this season. That's not magically all on OBJ for kicking a net and for making an interview, that's also on the thin skinned leadership of this team and their inability to manage their players. That's why we keep seeing people shipped out over 'culture'. I want to see what the excuses are going to be once the Reese players on the roster are all gone, since we're almost there.

eh, most of the "noise" was typical rumor mill nonsense.

Regardless, even it were true, it's irrelevant. Or at least it should have been to the front office.

I don't care what ownership thinks it owes Manning, this team is not winning doodie this season. And if anyone in the front office thinks otherwise, they should be shown the door immediately (they should probably be fired anyway). Truth is, this team is likely one of the two or three worst in the league. It is very difficult to imagine multiple teams worse than the Giants at this point.

Offense: We have a RB who threatens Ds. Teams will load the box to stop him. Our QB is over the hill and threatens no one. Our WRs scare no one. But hey, at least they will get 1 on 1 coverage.

Defense: No pass rush; bad LBs; mediocre CBs; bad safeties (maybe mediocre with Bethea and Peppers additions)

This is a 2-14 team. So if ownership thinks it owes something to give Eli a winning team, that ain't happening.

To be honest, Odell's star started to fade after 2015 when he melted down against (Gettleman's) Panthers and he earholed Norman. Up to that point, he was fun Odell, making great catches and putting up big numbers. After that game, he became a sideshow. Getting suspended, and also greasing the skids for Coughlin to be shown the door because TC lost complete control of Odell that day. Mara called him out after the season and said he needs to control his emotions.

And remember this fun quote from Odell in 2016 after the Viking loss and his fine for the cheap shot on Vacarro on the Saints?

Quote:
"Football is my sanctuary," Beckham said on Tuesday, per ESPN. "It's where I go to escape. It's where I'm most happy. I'm not having fun anymore."

Then we had the boat trip, the videos in Paris, the 2017 preseason injury followed by the season ending injury in the Charger game.

It's been eggshells ever since with Odell. The Giants decided to give him his money, and showed commitment to him. He seemed to act like he understood. And then came the Little Wayne interview. And at that point, after everything the organization did to support him, and pay him big money, he lost them. And we've now heard plenty of rumblings that his shut down at the end of the year was probably the final nail. Remember, he was hurt late in the Eagle game. He did play in the Bears game, and pulled a Cam Newton on the onside kick. After that, he went into shutdown mode. All the signs were there that he didn't want to be here. Even with his stupid twitter emojis as the drama was going on. The Giants finally said "enough". I just wish they'd have gotten more for him....

No, not a problem but a pain in the ass. Social media, the in game tantrums, the weird IV stories, and while I could put up with Beckham, but this is a guy who is not worth the future if the Giants can improve from a team standpoint. The Giants are not a receiver.

Unfortunately, they're already a distant memory, and have been for awhile now; yes, even with Eli on the team these past few years. It may only be 8 years since the most recent of those championships, but it feels alot longer than 8 years thanks to the ineptitude of those running the franchise and some on the field, as well. Eli being gone won't make those trophies feel anymore distant; at least not to me. They feel like they were won decades ago already, sadly.

One of the better threads to read since this occurred today.

Glad everyone here is expressing reasonable opinions without attacking. Pretty good stuff.

Personally am relived this chapter is finally over. It just always felt uncomfortable slow w this player. And it always felt the team looked the other way w him unlike any player before him. And that started this train wreck.

culture - by all accounts, all his teammates said he was a great teammate.

RE: L'il Wayne - glad to see we're making decisions based on the important stuff.

Lacked explosiveness? Still made great plays, coming off major broken ankle injury & before he might have been all the way back, hit with a nasty leg whip. no one knows when he's physically 100% again and even when physically 100%, takes a while to trust the moving parts again.

Playoff game - Eli hit the nail on the head with the Green Bay game. Young player made game bigger than it was. It happens.

Couldn't share the spotlight? That's funny, I saw him flying around the field making blocks downfield for Barkley.
Funny using Strahan as an example of always getting it right - he was a great Giant but badmouthed Fassel when he was off burying his mother and was part of the problem when Coughlin got here. TC had soem crazy rules but if you don't think MS played a role in some of the problem, you have a hsort memory.

He thought out loud about playing with a good friend. Friendships make a difference w/players some times. Chris Long of the Eagles, one of leagues most solid citizens talked about hating to play against friends.

No one knows what really went on. It's all speculation unless and until the real facts come out. But, we'll probably never know for sure.

You can conjure up any theory you want to support or reject the wisdom of this trade.

Unless I am imagining things, there was constant chatter about him playing out in LA.

Great take.

Agreed - think it was just time for both parties to go a different way.
Two perspectives here

1. Odell’s perspective.....was he REALLY wanting out and was he going to continue to be a distraction and possibly follow Antonio Brown’s lead? Is he really a bad influence on the team?

2. Giants perspective....was there anything more they could have done to smooth things over or possibly even ignore the hoopala going out? In addition, did they get the most they could for trading away such a great asset? I hear there were several other teams involved, so I’m assuming Cleve’s offer was better than theirs. Too bad Cleve wasn’t top 10 pick like they always have been and too bad the late third wasn’t a second. I think many of us would feel better if it were.
