What effect did Antonio Brown have on the OBJ trade ?

Archer : 3/12/2019 11:13 pm
Is it possible that Mara observed what has happened in Pittsburgh with Antonio Brown and was fearful that OBJ would follow in his footsteps?

Brown and OBJ are close. Brown showed how a disgruntled WR could force a trade and make a lot of money

I am certain that the Giants read the tea leaves
Absolutely,
SHO'NUFF : 3/12/2019 11:14 pm : link
and they got what they wanted. Dangerous precedent.
Timing of this trade is interesting

two days after AB.
If they traded him out of fear

then this franchise truly is clueless and we're in for some long years.
The Steelers only got a 3 and 5 for Antonio Brown
Mr. Bungle : 3/12/2019 11:18 pm : link
and are eating $21.1 million in dead money.

But all the pearl-clutching has been saved for the Giants "getting nothing" for Odell Beckham, even though they got the #17 overall, a late 3rd, and Jabrill Peppers.

I bet the Steelers wish they got that big bunch of "nothing."

Are you kidding? They make moves based on Mike Francesca's rants.

I think OBJ has been hard for this franchise to handle for a long time. We have never had the showboat diva type receiver before. I always felt like he probably wouldn’t finish his career in NY.

Evan Silva has been pushing this point on Twitter and its starting to not sound so crazy

I posted this on the massive Odell thread

and my answer is...I think a lot:

Everything seems to point to Antonio Brown

spooking the shit out of the Giants front office. And let's not forget, the Steelers are essentially (and literally) the Giants AFC cousins. After watching that horror show go down (from an ownership point of view), the Giants watched the Steelers trade Brown a year too late and get 60 cents on the dollar.

I am with what jt was saying on BBI, that I believe the plan all along for the Giants was to keep Odell this year, see what they could do, and then trade him next year, as the cap hit became less an issue and they can at least get 2 years for their efforts.

But watching the Brown return. Watching public circus that was created and the demand for more money guaranteed, I think the Giants got visions of that after the 2019 season so they moved to get him out now.

As for the return for Odell, when you compare it to other WRs traded, it was better than what others got, just not what we'd expect back. They did get the first rounder. They did get a 3rd and a starter. At the least, Gettleman should have gotten the better 3rd rounder, and I'd have hoped for a 2020 2nd. But...again, looking at Antonio Brown. Brown ultimately dictated where he was going to go. He shot down the Buffalo deal. I'm sure Odell wanted LA or SF, but he had Cleveland on his "list" so he could be with Mayfield and Landry. As much as I would have wanted the Giants to shop that offer around, I don't know how far they would have gotten in reality.

Odell was never a distraction to his teammates, that was what we had heard from his former teammates over and over again. But it's a fine line between that and him turning into Antonio Brown and completely pissing off the entire organization. The Giants basically got out before it got really bad.

that's a really dumb way to run a football team.

I'm agreeing with you. These guys have no clue.
Matt, if that's truly what drove this trade
Greg from LI : 3/12/2019 11:55 pm : link
Then I actually have even less faith in the front office than I had before, and I didn't even think that was even possible. Talk about a stupid, reactionary way to run a team.
Amari Cooper got a first rounder...

This is the thing I don’t get. Amari Cooper is a good receiver, not great. OBJ had the must successful beginning to a WR career in history. How do you figure he’s only worth a late 3rd rounder and an average starting safety more than Cooper?

Good question. I think 2 things. One is OBJ's injury history. He does seem kind of fragile. The other is, he's got a little crazy in him. You never know what to expect.

Also, I like Peppers. We got a young safety who can both tackle and cover well.
OBJ and Brown
bc4life : 3/13/2019 6:00 am : link
in totally different stages of their career. Brown could walk away aftera pretty long career, cashed in as a 6th round pick.

OBJ ain't gonna retire at 26 and he's a 1st rounder, making big money from day one.

got a little crazy in him
bc4life : 3/13/2019 6:01 am : link
please illuminate us. btw, crazy is not simply things you wouldnt do
It's just that with OBJ, you never know what to expect. Maybe crazy
Ira : 3/13/2019 6:08 am : link
is too strong a term, although my expression was 'a little crazy'. He's a very hard worker and a good teammate, but nothing he might do would surprise me.
sometmes with guys like him
bc4life : 3/13/2019 6:41 am : link
you set him down and get him to agree to things and every time he breaks that agreement - call him on it.
They did call him
mdthedream : 3/13/2019 7:11 am : link
out by trading him. Look do you think the Patriots put up with that? They win without guys like him. Its a team sport and if your building a winner he is not that kind of guy. A team player who does what it takes to win. The Giants need to find the QB of the future they have a winner in Barkley and a great leader. It sucks that a guy like OBJ can't figure it out and acts like a clown on and off the field. The Giants sadly are better off without him.
Jerry Rice
mdthedream : 3/13/2019 7:12 am : link
was a winner and a leader OBJ is not. Hell he choked in the playoffs for us.
Patriots were
bc4life : 3/13/2019 7:16 am : link
interested in trading for Beckham, reportedly
better off without him?
bc4life : 3/13/2019 7:17 am : link
time will tell but I'm doubting it
