A couple of things I am hearing on the OBJ trade

1st and 10 : 3/13/2019 2:19 am
-Firstly, Eli is going no where. Bringing in a new QB with OBJ's antics were part of the reason for the trade (more happened this year than we realize??). I hear QB is in play at 6 as keeping Eli this year is not about winning now but about grooming the next QB.

-There was concern on the Giants part about OBJ staying healthy over the course of the contract (quad injury taking him out for 4 games).

-San Fran was not going to give up the 2nd pick in the draft and that is why the trade with them went no where.

-OBJ was not too happy about Barkley becoming the face of the franchise (and the Giants wanting Barkley to be the face).

-DG is looking to build a team behind a strong running game backed by a great defense.

-TE might be in play in the 2nd or 3rd round and build a strong 2 TE set offense with Barkley.

All of the above is from a source I have in the industry that has been right on a few things in the past.

There are several sources that have said the opposite

if its true the beckham was butthurt

about sharing that spotlight with barkely, that is just pathetic. all the rest seems to make sense given gettleman's own words. targeting TE in draft is is a good scoop. thanks for posting.

- Building a team behind a strong running game and defense is dumb in todays game

- I would not be opposed to Hockenson at 17 with the intention of running a base offense with a pure Y in Hock and a pure move in Engram as centerpieces. It may be a smart zig in a Barkley-centric offense while the rest of the league zags multiple wides.

I read the same, adversely Carl Banks is very insistent that they will have “the successor prior to the start of the season either via FA or draft” Truthfully, I wonder if anyone really knows.

Go Terps : 3/13/2019 2:38 am : link
The Eli grooming the QB talk is troubling. I don't discount Eli getting an extension.

I do like the talk about a tight end being in play. 21 personnel was effective in 2018 in the passing game.
Leaks
Go Terps : 3/13/2019 2:40 am : link
After abiding this idiot for five years, and with the ridiculously silly fan outrage over this trade, you can bet the Giants are going to leak a bunch of shit about Beckham.

In a year everyone is going to be saying they never liked the guy.
If we are going TE early
montanagiant : 3/13/2019 2:42 am : link
You have to get one of the Iowa TE's. Both can block and catch
Hmmm half the spotlight in New York
SHO'NUFF : 3/13/2019 3:02 am : link
or all of it in Cleveland... yeah, no thanks Ohio.
If indeed OBJ got butt hurt about Barkley becoming the new
BlueLou'sBack : 3/13/2019 3:51 am : link
"face of the franchise" - which sounds incredibly dubious - he's going to love the way the media in Cleveland will give Baker Mayfield 10x the credit they give OBJ.

But seriously this is very, very doubtful. OBJ seemed to love Barkley. Even if his attempts to get Barkley to do some stupid TD dance were largely ignored.
Defense
greek13 : 3/13/2019 3:54 am : link
We have nobody on defense and we are talking a tight end? Holy shit
DG Wants to build a great defense
Aaroninma : 3/13/2019 4:12 am : link
Yet hasn't improved the defense one single iota since he got here?

This is the same guy who thought Curtis Riley was good?
A “pain in the ass”
jeff57 : 3/13/2019 4:16 am : link
Is how an anyonymous source inside Giants land described him.
IMO, the onside kick thing is just stupid.
Big Blue Blogger : 3/13/2019 5:35 am : link
Did Beckham make a "business decision"? Yeah, probably. But IMO he wasn't even the Giant most responsible for letting Brown recover that kick. Watch Curtis Riley. Not absolving Beckham - just pointing out that he's supposed to have an uncontested play on the ball.
Also lousy design by the ST coaches, and a very good kick by Parkey. - ( New Window )
There is no QB
Sammo85 : 3/13/2019 5:40 am : link
even remotely worth taking at 6. That would be an utter waste of a premium pick.

Time will be the true judge...
x meadowlander : 3/13/2019 5:50 am : link
...why was this the best deal DG could get? In a few years, it may we'll be looked on as a worst ever trade, but if OBJ continues to get hurt? If he has lost any of his quickness?

I have to believe Gettleman thinks OBJ can't perform at that level anymore.
or Maras & Tisch

Is willing to stick to his guns on this trade in the face of fan backlash, or whether he will just say he deferred to Gettleman and would have liked to keep Odell. I don’t put that past him. He is a very thin skinned, tin eared guy.

And of course people here will hate OBJ in a year. The same thing happened with Islander fans and Tavares. When a star leaves, the fans are mad at management for a while, and then they turn on the player. That is just how fans are. It is not some great awakening to reality. OBJ was a diva but the only people he was a distraction to was Gettleman and Mara.
OBJ had a self control issue - not a "leak"
GiantsUA : 3/13/2019 7:03 am : link
one just needed to have a pair of eyes and turn in on Sunday.

SQ - should be a captain in 2019 - if OBJ was still on the team, not so much.

This is not akin to Islanders/Tavares. In that case you had a player bolt after saying to whomever would listen that he wanted to stay long term and used that to convince team brass not to trade him where they could have netted significant assets. Gettleman deserves the laughter from the media. We trade one of the best players for the game for the 17th overall pick and open up a need at a more impactful position (WR) to fill a need at a less important spot (S). We now have to overpay for a Free Agent WR or draft one with one of our first 3 picks rather than going DL/OL/LB
From what I hear
1st and 10 : 3/13/2019 7:15 am : link
there was more going on behind the scenes than we know or might ever know. I am not a fan of this trade as it leaves us very 1 dimensional.

With that said, this screams to me as much about a roster rebuild as it is about a culture rebuild for this team/franchise.

This is now clearly the franchise of this GM and coach. If they do not make us competitive in a year or 2, we will relive the glory days of the 70's and early 80's.

OBJ a super talented head case
dd in Mass : 3/13/2019 7:23 am : link
The Giants were extremely upset with the way he conducted himself last year after he promised to grow up. The last 4 games of the season were the last straw.

The Giants wanted out and didn't see him as part of the rebuild with Saquon.

DG has been fielding offers for months. He had received 5 final offers yesterday and I am assuming he took the best deal.

Considering the circumstances with AB and the Steelers I feel like we got good value. Now what they do with it, is another story.

Thanks, dd. Very interesting. I also read that Cleveland gave in on Peppers' inclusion in order to complete the deal. Any truth to that?

You are mostly wrong in what you said. He didn't trade him for the 17th pick. He was traded for 17th, 95th, a former #1 pick in Peppers (who replaces Collins at 1/14 the price) and a flipped 4th rnd pick (about 132) for a 5th rnd pick (about 155).
That is a huge difference from what you said. And they do not need to find a player of the same caliber as OBJ at WR. Sy and Dave-Te said there are quality starting WRs in rounds 2 thru 4.
As much as I love Barkley

I really hope the next “face of the franchise” after Eli leaves, is the QB. Otherwise, that means the next Giants QB is not a franchise QB.
So the Giants got more than SF was willing to part with

fkap : 3/17/2019 9:16 am : link
except maybe the TE thing.

We've been linked to taking/not taking a QB at 6 every which way to sunday. The rest has been out there a while.

Go Terps: I'm with you on the Eli mentoring thing. It'll just be a Giant fiasco. I want no part of an overlap. It'll be a daily media/fan frenzy on yelling for the backup. Worse than anything we've seen so far. Just bring in a newbie, and let Tanney be the vet presence saying study film, get here early, work hard. He may not have the ability to see the field, but he obviously knows what it takes to stay in the league despite that.
