A Couple of Thoughts from a fan (gloomy)

ShocktoBeck : 3/13/2019 3:43 am
Been an NYG fan for a long time. Root for other teams in other sports as well. Don’t remember being this demotivated as a fan ever, and it isn’t because we lost obj.

It’s because of how the Giants have been running business over the course of the past few years:

- On one hand, there is something to be said about the leadership skills and courage of one’s convictions required to make unpopular decisions and stick to s course in the face of adversity. On the other hand - I’m not sure anymore this is what the Giants are doing. I have been a strong DG supporter, until yesterday.

- It has been proven numerous times in sports, trading a transcendent talent for a bunch of other pieces very rarely works out.

- It appears the agenda isn’t making the team better for the fans sake at all costs, including less than comfortable enviournment for ownership and management. Actually it appears like the opposite: ownership feels it’s the fans that need to compromise: We have a malcontent? We’ll trade him.
We’ll hire a coach that fits our culture, even if his resume doesn’t warrant it. Our general manager is free to make any move in his crusade to extinguish all remaining pieces of the previous regime. And protect at all costs the one piece from the regime before that (Eli), the regime who’s leader actually got the current GM the job.

- We had a chance to watch an amazing phenomenon in blue for 5 years: best RB and best WR on the same offense at the same time. And definitely the 2 most electrifying players in the league at their respective positions. That chance is gone and will never return in our life time. Instead we’ll watch our uber charismatic QB and coach. Can’t wait.

- Winning is very important. But enjoying the product is too. We could have enjoyed the product even in losing seasons if Barkley and OBJ were let loose. And their presence would have helped each other do that. Now Barkley faces a tall task and extra pressure. There is nothing around him. And as a fan, not sure how excited I am about pushing through this depressing time with the team DG seems to have in mind. I don’t want to watch a Carolina in blue. Bringing a lines focused GM to build a team around exceptional skill players already in place was a great idea. Trading those skill players away to focus on the line is dumb. Check the ques this morning to buy Zeitler jerseys. That says it all.

- I thought DG was opposed trading anything for a bag of pretzels. Really? Trading probably the best WR in the league in 2019-2024 for picks 17,85, a SS while taking a cap hit of 15m?! One year into his contract after paying him his signing bonus? Are you effin kidding me?!
The chances of any of that even getting close to comparable value are extremely slim.

- It appears the Giants are incapable of 2 things: Managing people with an outside the mould personality, regardless of their talent level. Zero ability to bring them in, manage them and get the best out of them. If the best players aren’t also boyscouts like Eli and Barkley, we are fucked. And secondly, retain talent and have stars wanting to play here. OBJ wanted out. And he’s not the only one. The Giants aren’t a coveted destination anymore. People actually prefer playing elsewhere.

- We are now clearly a team managed by a guy that doesn’t handle stars well, exhibits a no nonsense strictly business attitude, and has questionable at best people skills. We better have exceptional drafts and make genius trades as I don’t see free agents lining up to play for him.

- Love Eli and what he’s done for this franchise. Not looking forward to watching him play anymore. Definitely with questionable weapons to throw to. Him taking home 23m for 2019 is an atrocity, and that fact is more responsible for the Giants results than odell’s antics ever were. DG is game for trading away obj, but can’t have an honest conversation with his over the hill QB about fair compensation. It’s a joke.

- Insteadcof getting Obj a new QB, we are getting Eli a new receiver. I would laugh if it wasn’t at our own expense. We are stuck today with Eli, Shurmur, Mara. Zero charisma between all 3. Barkley is a Ray of light, but this is depressing.

- Nice to know Mike Francesca really is the one running the team. Every campaign Mike ran in recent years has become s reality. Especially when it comes to getting rid of people. Now Obj joins that list.

Too bad. Now we’ll always wonder what could have been.
LT would have been traded away from these Giants

Are trying to get away with everything they can. To the point it has become impossible to deal with demands and still field a competitive team. As good as he was I don’t mind him being gone. He’s already demanding a new contract. I also was beginning to have concerns around his ability to stay healthy. What have we won with this guy anyway? Nothing!
He was in it for the money. Look around he’s not the only one. Personally I’m glad he is gone.
I to am a longtime fan and season ticketholder

I will hold judgement until those picks have been made, understand who and what we got in them and Peppers. We got some dead monies but i believe, we did actually netted cap this year and clear 19 million next year, which is over 100 million available, which should add additiinal assest.

I loved watching him play and that catch is still one of the greatest feats i have seen in person. But i also felt, he was a ticking time bomb. I am still disappointed by his playoff lapses, his longer then normal rehab, and i truly believed was a good team player, but his 2nd fiddle to barkley and playing with a rookie qb, will not sit well.

I hope this turns out like the hershal trade but time will tell
How exactly is this
greek13 : 3/13/2019 4:19 am : link
Team going to win in the next 3 years? We haven’t won a playoff game in the better part of a decade and we have a relic at QB with zero behind him.
Weakest roster in the league. People call for the 2020 draft - so maybe in 2021 we have a shot? If Saquon isn’t beat to hell with 350 carries and catches per season maybe?. One injury away from franchise disaster. Be patient they say? They have a plan? Stop the madness this is a franchise in total freefall,
My main problem

Is that there is no cohesive thought behind any of these moves. Day one he's going all in, day two he's rebuilding, day three he's doing both, day four back to tanking again.

All of the moves Gettleman makes in a vacuum could be probably be defended, but putting them all together makes zero sense.

Take the 'locker room culture' for example. It can be said that trading away Apple and (even though I do not agree at all) Beckham are moves to improve the locker room culture, fine. But then he's hiring Pat Shurmur who has all the charisma of a wet paper bag and he let's Collins and Harrison go, who by all accounts were very muched loved in the locker room. By hanging on to Manning he's sending the message that the level of your play really doesn't matter all that much, as long as you 'fall in line'. What type of message is that for a locker room?

Another example is these trades. On the one hand he seems to be acquiring draft picks where ever he can to improve this team in the draft, great. But then he goes around and lets Collins walks for nothing and trades draft picks for an average linebacker on a bad contract.

Trading Beckham could maybe be defended if his value is high enough (I don't think that what we got was enough) but then why not do that last off season and pay him this huge freaking deal?

Drafting Barkley over a QB can make sense, if you're committed to going all in, but after not even half a season you trade away half your defense and another couple of months later you trade away the only other player on the team opposing defenses have to account for.

So now what? Are we just going to rebuild completely, a year late? Might as well cut Eli now and trade Jenkins for anything you can get. I doubt Gettleman is planning on re-signing Shepard next year, so maybe see what we can get for him as well?

This team and this organization lack any sort of direction. We as fans can keep 'having faith', plugging our ears to the waves of mockery around the league, but I very much doubt things will get better if something doesn't change soon.

Don't think Gettleman is fine just because he's not Jerry Reese .Don't think the Browns were the Browns because of some transcendental 'bad-team-mojo'. The Browns were the Browns because of years upon years of bad ownership and horrible decision making. We are getting there quickly.
This team

Has lost it's way. If you were going to move him you should have traded him to Cleveland last year for the 4th overall pick, draft Darnold at 2 and Saquon at 4. The Jets were not going RB at 3, they were going to take Allen if we took Darnold.

LT wasn’t injury prone. Wasn’t a distraction.
I can not justify all his moves...some are/were mistakes
George from PA : 3/13/2019 4:40 am : link
Collins should have been traded at deadline.

I am not sure Snacks had the right attitude.

Next year, they will have over 100 million to spend...

Losing obj has made them weaker right now.
Great post

Really enjoyed reading this. Thanks. My thoughts exactly.
Shocktobeck , I couldn’t agree more

The franchise seems adrift. The plan is not only unclear but almost bizarre. Trade your 25yr old pro bowl safety for a third or fourth pick? Nah. We will get him to UFA, refuse to use the tag, gone.

Team has arguable a top 3 WR. Well, he is a big personality (never arrested, never harmed anyone). Boom. Gone for a pitiful return.

Only edge rusher, gone. The entire D, poor last year, looks worse right now.

Yet, the 38-year old QB who has missed the playoffs for four out of five years, is clearly in steep decline. Build the team around him.

I hated the very safe, conservative Gettleman hire. I hate it more today.

Pathetic Post
giantstock : 3/13/2019 7:11 am : link
I hate the whieny posts from posters like the OP crying that future stars won't want to come to Giants. His message gets lost when he says stupid things like that and anyone who agrees with him too - they're nuts.

Players go with the money most of the time. Stop acting like a 2 year old because your hero got traded.

I don't like the trade but hopeful it can work out.

Hell I even gave DG a F Grade as GM this past year so I'm definitely no fan of him but still hopeful. But this crap we can't get stars is just such utter nonsense if we have money it makes you wonder anyone who thinks that, how much are they are into hero-worship?

To agree though with the OP -- I do think he is right-- it's funny we are still in possession of ELi and let everyone else go in all this mess. I would have preferred a tank without him. And end result like the OP I don't have confidence in teh GM or the coach or the D coach or the owner.
This is an opportunity

to reset this franchise. We have been a mess and the shine that used be on the New York Giants has faded.

This organization which had held itself to higher standards fell apart. People used to talk about how the Giants did things the right way. This is their chance to get that back. Lets get back to Giant football starting at the top.

Lets be the leaders in class and integrity. Lets build a "team" of players who follow that path. Lets build through the draft and develop players united leaning on each other for success. Lets get back to playing hard nose, smashmouth football. Let win with power and will, scheme and dettermonation.

Leave Odel and the flashy me first error of football and get back being proud of the players, coaches, front office, owners and belive in the brand of Big Blue.
Giants turned the corner yesterday

And started the rebuild, by getting a bigger return on Beckham than the Raiders and Steelers got on Cooper and Brown combined.

What about 8-24 with an oft injured receiver, that created many distractions with his self absorbed attitude did you enjoy so much.

Giants offense was pretty impressive 3 of the last 4 games without Beckham when he was “injured”,

I m good with the decision, never felt they would win with this guy.

Now they can stop pretending they are close and make the necessary
moves to rebuild.
You guys really need to get a grip
AnnapolisMike : 3/13/2019 7:39 am : link
OBJ was fun to watch. But the Giants were not going to win ANYTHING with him...EVER. You don't build a team around a WR.

The Giants just got themselves a starter at safety for the next 3 years and two picks that they can hopefully use to address the situation at QB if they don't try and work a deal to acquire Rosen.

The first time OBJ misses a game in Cleveland or pulls his usual bullshit...all of you missing him will turn on him like a pack of angry wolves.
