Was he got rid of popular players
They ran him out of town for it
Here is the NYG list of traded/released/guys who we let walk so far:
Jpp
Vernon
Collins
Harrison
Kennard
Okwara
Apple
Pugh
Richburg
OBJ
Who is next? Who is left?
Seems like the rebuild should have happened a few years back...
I think they clearly overestimated what they had in 2018. Now, they're cleaning house. Not sure it could us much other than one year.
He should have done this last year.

The main contract they just escaped was one Gettleman handed out. That's part of the problem.

True but they thought they had one more run in them...they were obviously wrong.
One of the Best Guards and SS.

When they brought Gettleman in, the plan was to let him be the guy that makes the unpopular decisions so when they move on and go to Abrams he can start with a clean slate and not have to be the guy that got rid of OBJ, Vernon, JPP and eventually Eli.

No argument from me the decision making has been wishy washy under DG.
It was Mara with (stupidly) Shurmur's backing.
Then Beckham made Mara look like a complete fool.

I wonder how much of that was ownership? I read the Glazer stuff in the trade thread and he mentioned DG wanted him gone last yr, but Tisch wouldn't sign off on it... until the Lil Wayne interview... anyway... DG is in full house cleaning now. The big bath!!!

And that is the main problem here. What changed from the time they handed OBJ that contract to yesterday? The Lil Wayne interview? If that changes the trajectory of how they build this team the people in charge are not adults.

If you believe this, what does that say about this organization? This is not how competent teams are run. Owners should not interfere with personnel moves and GM's should not let them. It has happened with Eli and according to some it has happened with Beckham. If this is true (and it very well might be) we are in huge trouble going forward, because we can not trust Gettleman not to be a yes-man for Mara.
Have that be the one high point of your tenure.
Get fired.
Be able to tout "GM OF A SUPER BOWL TEAM!!!" as a justification to be hired by another team.
Not at all. Didn't say it was bad. Good moves IMO
It was time to blow it up last season and they didn’t, so now it’s easy to question Gettleman’s ability to handle the job going forward. Shurmur and Mara are to blame as well.
Rumor has it that Shurmur (and Tisch) convinced the Giants to stick with Beckham. Sticking with him is one thing, but signing him to a cap-crippling deal while you still have major reservations about him is an entirely different story.
The Beckham relationship was bungled by the Joseph Hazlewood of GMs. I don’t know how anyone can have an ounce of faith in his ability to steer this ship out of rough waters.
Captain Hazlewood has done a crappy job at accumulating picks. He got fleeced by the Browns. The best he could do is #17 and the Brown’s second 3rd? Not even their first 3rd let alone a 2nd.
I guess I shouldn’t be too hard on Gettleman. He is working hard to secure the #1 overall pick in 2020. I’m certain he will screw this up seven ways to Sunday.

Rebuild? Then why do we still have Eli and why sign a 35 year old safety? This isn't a rebuild. This is doing a hakf assed rebuild.
All this talk about Saquon being a generational talent, we already had one on the roster. But that hasn't stopped Gettlemen from getting rid of players just because they were brought in by the previous regime.
That being said, are we really sure we should bring DeOssie back? I know he's been to a bunch of pro bowls and has been a captain, but he was a part of that "bad locker room culture".

I would love to be the GM of the Giants then. It's a great job.
Make a move someone likes - 'Great job!'
Make a move that seems stupid, and it's either 'he had no choice' or 'Mara forced him to do it'.
Remember when it was suggested that Gettleman only got the job because he'd agree to keep Eli as starting QB? That was shot down pretty violently, because DG would never do that. Is that the same DG who'd let them force him to keep Beckham?
Pick a lane, folks, and stay in it.

It was his first year. he has no idea what the locker room is like without seeing it first hand. It's easy to look back with 20/20 hindsight and say this kind of stuff but it's just not realistic.
Yes, agreed. A YEAR AGO WHEN YOU HAD THE QB IN YOUR GRASP. They dont get a fucking do-over. Idiotic.

What? They were 3-13?!?! He needed to see the locker room first hand? Makes no sense. Team sucked, was time to blow it up.
Everyone here wanted drastic change. Now drastic measures are taken and its all bitching and hand-wringing. This team has been awful for 6 years running and the majority of the past decade. Its time.
If you have 24 carat gold diamond encrustrf rims on a 91 Celica are you gonna rebuild the car around the wheels are do you hock em and build towards a new car?
He put the offense on his back in 2016. That’s why we made the playoffs. Without him you get a 2017 team all over again.
OBJ was the only offense we had for 2 years.
IMO, so far, so good.
IMO, so far, so good.
I'll agree when they drop Eli

So what come in and fire everybody? Come on man. There are certain moves you make right away. And there are certain ones you learn and act as you go. On top of all of that fluidity in situations (injuries, trades, blahty blahty blah). If you think anyone would have come in here last year and just completely blowing shit up without assessing... well that would be pretty silly.

Winner winner chicken dinner. Same goes for Shurmur.
I'm willing to bet this was all was covered in the interview process. You're probably right about Abrams and the succession plan as well.

Let him go set records in Cleveland. He's a memory.
