If you were Eli Manning

Tim in Eternal Blue : 3/13/2019 9:15 am
Would you retire or come back this season? If so, why?

I'm sure making 20M is great but I'm sure Manning isn't hurting for money.

-Stats? Sure he will gain another 4000 yards or so... But he will also go further below 500 overall.

What is Eli's motivation for playing this year? After OBJ trade... It's not about winning (this year).

Is it just the desire for competition and delusion of going out on top?

Eli has made it clear in years past that he has no desire to be a mentor. He wants to start. No matter what.

I'd love to be a fly on the wall listening to Eli and his camp discuss this upcoming season.

I think the consensus is that the FO will keep Eli this year... But if you are Manning.... Why would you want to?
Cut him

He's going to break

the all-time check down record this year. That's something.
$20m is $20m
jcn56 : 3/13/2019 9:16 am : link
I know Eli's made some good money in his time, but he's got a limited career window (he'll continue to earn, but not at the same rate). Hard to pass up the cash.
$23 million for starters...
BillKo : 3/13/2019 9:18 am : link
...plus Eli believes he can still play, with or without OBJ.

He's probably thinking the OL is going to be infinitely better, SB will even be better, and overall the offense could be a ton more efficient.

I really think people are overlooking the fact that when you have a good OL, it opens the playbook up dramatically and efficiently.

I'm sure that's a big factor.
At this point

Best thing to do is to release him
Eli has a contract and still wants to play (and still can play)
Ivan15 : 3/13/2019 9:22 am : link
He isn’t going to voluntarily retire.

He may be cut but the Giants don’t want to do that.

A restructure of his current contract will absolutely happen.

A restructure is a terrible idea. We don't want Manning on the books next year. A restructure gives us dead cap money for the 2020 season.
Eli is "only" making $17m this year
Scyber : 3/13/2019 9:24 am : link
His cap hit is $23.2m, but this because of $6.2m carrying over from his signing bonus. That cash was already paid.
Business as usual
Rory B. Bellows : 3/13/2019 9:25 am : link
He wants to play and wants to win.

Probably saw some glimmers of hope EOY last season that they don't need OBJ.

OL just got better & Safeties got upgraded. Find a WR now

Hope we get a high 2020 pick (1st/2nd rd) for Jackrabbit when they trade him (he's gotta be next right? I really don't want to trade him, but the scorched earth plan is unfolding.
you can't restructure a 1 year contract
Chip : 3/13/2019 9:26 am : link
you can extend it and create cap space and more than likely dead money in future years which would be the right move.

Offense was pretty good without the Diva last 4 games of the season
Unless they are DEFINATELY
Dave on the UWS : 3/13/2019 10:06 am : link
getting a young QB in here to learn from him, no point in keeping him around. Cut time. move ahead to the future. They are going to be bad either way.
When you trade Odell

There is no point to Eli.
the emperor has no clothes
giantfan2000 : 3/13/2019 10:11 am : link
now finally the Eli lovers will understand

Eli is a shell of his former self and is not worth nearly the money he is getting paid
When Giants finally wake up and release Eli -- No-one wants to sign Eli Manning
he will retire
Eli's motivation is the playoffs and the super bowl
since1925 : 3/13/2019 10:12 am : link
That should be the motivation for every single player in the league.

The guy deserves a chance to play behind an offensive line that isn't crap. This is a guy that was sacked over 40 times last year. That would have killed Brady.
re. him being a mentor
Dr. D : 3/13/2019 10:18 am : link
yes he made it clear he wasn't interested in being a mentor when he was 35, 36 and had 4 - 3 years left on his contract. That's no longer the case.

I'm pretty sure he sees the writing on the wall and anyone who has watched Eli throughout his career should know that even if his priority isn't mentoring, he's still going to be about the best mentor a young QB could ask for.

He's a team guy; a good human being.

I personally, hope that he shows that with a decent OL (which they finally started to resemble at the end of last year after about 8 years of sucking) and with Engram, Barkley and maybe a high draft pick WR/TE, he's still a good QB. I would love for them to defy odds and go to the playoffs, maybe even win a round. Call me crazy.

Are you kidding?
HomerJones45 : 3/13/2019 10:20 am : link
He's healthy. He'll play and take the $17 million and take the chance of getting traded to a contender.

We've seen Brady when he is under major pressure. Not great. The Giants OL the last few years has made opposing defenses look like SB defenses, on a weekly basis.
The point is to try to restore his legacy
Mayhap : 3/13/2019 10:23 am : link
It's in tatters right now, and he probably still hopes to give one more big F U to the doubters (which is almost everybody at this point). Having a big year without OBJ behind a rebuilt offensive line (while unlikely) would certainly help.
Cut his ass.

IF the Giants keep him
Dinger : 3/13/2019 10:53 am : link
He'd LOVE to play. The line will be much improved. He'll have Barkley, Sheppard, Engram to pass to plus he's had other seasons with lesser weapons.

The bigger and more immediate question is do the Giants keep him. But this is all common knowledge.
