FA. There isn't even anyone to make a splash with.
I think the questions are
1. Does Eli get cut?
2. Do they trade for Rosen with the pick(s) they just got?
3. Do they trade any more vets (Jenkins, Ogletree, Solder etc) for picks
4. Do they make any more smart manageable cap signings at positions of need like Williams, Boston, Golden, etc.
of everything they have been doing since the trade deadline. I would expect this means some trades are in the works. Free agency this year should be selective to fill holes with young guys looking to prove themselves, not veterans looking for a pay day.
1. Cut Eli, trade a 2nd+ to Seattle for Wilson.
2. Stand pat and take BPA at 6 and 17.
No to Rosen. Talk of his work ethic by many in the business scares the heck out of me.
rnargi!!
I dont think a 2nd does it for Wilson. Bradford garnered a 1st.
I like Wilson a lot but he doesnt make sense to me at this point. We would have to sign him to a 4-5 year deal and give up a 1st rounder. Early on he will win us a few more games than a rookie might but is 8-8 vs. 5-11 really worth it? Especially at $25M+ per year?
Russ has to be a total pipe dream - but, I would really love that.
Agree with this, which is why I hate these teaser threads. I will get my hopes up for this kind of move and then find out we pried Case Keenum away from the Redskins for a 3rd.
Could Shurmer like him as much as Dave Te? Maybe a deal with the Vikings that includes him plus other players/picks going back and forth?....just spit ballin'
Trading for Wilson while also trading away Beckham makes absolutely no sense. They have the worst receivers in the league, and in generally have the least talented roster in football. Trading for a 30 year old QB at this point would be beyond stupid.

Hah, yep. That's why I won't even let myself think about that.
Wilson is fantastic. He never misses games, he knows how to protect his body and I have quite a bit of faith that he will stay very productive for 5+ years. He's the ideal QB for what the league is right now.
Beckham trade yet. Obviously, they've known about this long enough to have even the most bland statement about 'moving forward' and all that crap ready.
One of the reasons I can think of for not issuing a statement is that they will have more to say than just the Beckham stuff. Sure would be nice.

Probably just because it isn't official until 4pm today.

dear god, can you think beyond this moment? You think we stay with what we have now at WR?
Should be for 2020 and beyond. Please dont trade picks for players. Please dont over pay for FA. 2019 is a throw away year now. We might have close to $100 million in cap space next year and a top 3 pick. Dont jeopardize that.
I'm wondering if it's Rosen, except the Giants plan is still rolling with Eli for one more year at some type of reduced salary?
Trading for Rosen and keeping Eli doesnt make a ton of sense. One of the attractive things about Rosen is that he's cost controlled for another 4 years. They'd essentially be burning one of those years. Not saying it can't happen but it doesn't seem to be the optimal way of doing it. Then again you can argue that spending a year with Eli might help mitigate some of the stuff we've heard about attitude/preparation etc. But also if you're that concerned why make the trade?
This is the most excited I've been about Giants football in too long to remember. That's really sad, it being a Wednesday in March the morning after trading away one of the most talented guys to ever don the uniform, but also kinda fun.
Matt in SGS has provided solid info in the past as well.
Jay, I've had my moments and heard a few whispers that I"ve posted, but I don't know anything going on this year. If I hear something, I'll say something. In the meantime, I'm deferring to jt and hitdog.
I want the fall and winter to be fun. That hasn't been the case for years. Days like we've had recently are the reason why watching this team has been awful for so long.

I don't think signing Williams at RT would make us implode. I think that would be a good signing no matter what our plan is. All pro caliber RT who is 26 years old. Get him in here on a 4 or 5 year deal.

I think he meant an extension of some sort for Eli.
and convert his the majority of his salary to a bonus which allows them to spread his money out and lower his cap number. That way he loses no money and the Giants gain cap flexibility this year.. and can afford it going forward...
This is what I would expect..
Then I expect some of that money to go toward getting a RT and some other help..
which nobody on this site called, I don't know that anything they have done has been anything other than generally what was predicted. That's the entire problem. This team is utterly predictable.

Them not spending wild money on sought after FA has been unpredictable because of what happened last year and in 2016. So that has been shocking to me.

There is still time for wild, unwise FA spending. Wait until 4pm!
RE: RE: Some of this stuff isn't hard to see comming.....
It really is that easy. The tea leaves the past couple years have been so easy to read. Crystal clear, nearly.
Surprised so many get it wrong.
I don't know if it's so much that people can't see it - it's more that a lot of us are trying not to believe it.
An extension for Eli would be a tough pill to swallow at this point.
But you're probably right that it's what they'll do.
For better or worse, they want him here when they take the next QB. Adding next year to his deal, spreading the money, reducing this year's cap hit and trying to structure it in a way that won't kill us if we want to cut bait after this year is about what I expect them to do at this point.
They'll take the cap space, pursue someone like Williams to play RT... and then once again, we're in a precarious position where we're making moves like we want to win games now, but simultaneously making others that make that much less likely.
To me, if you're going in this direction, you need Eli to go out the door with Beckham. Otherwise, what purpose does it really serve to have him on the roster?
It's not what I want - but it's what I think is probably coming next.
to me, I would ask a simple question. Why? If the cost to do so is to bring in Williams at RT, I'd ask the Giants to look somewhere else to find the money. Stop spending good money after bad. If the Giants aren't going to cut Eli to just start this whole thing completely over (and all indications are "the Kansas City Model" is the way they will go), either ask him to take a paycut (he won't) or just leave him and his contract alone and go into next year with an unfettered cap. This year is a complete rebuild for young players. The prime free agents have been plucked. What is the point to extending Eli? Unless....
The Giants really are going to load up the roster everywhere this year except for QB, squeeze yet another year out of Eli playing the role of Peyton in his final run with the Broncos where he's a shell of himself, but carried by the rest of the team. In this case, Eli would be carried by Saquon and a better OL. And the plan is to get that 2020 QB and delay the "KC Model" one more year to land a Fromm/Tua/Herbert.
I still standby my assertion. I don't really like any of the QBs in this draft. Push comes to shove, and if the Cardinals are taking Murray, trade those mid round picks for Rosen, and if you want him to sit behind Eli to break him in slow, fine. If he busts, you are back in the market again in 2020 anyway. But Rosen is as much a gamble as Haskins or Lock. I'd rather keep the high picks to fix the roster.
Now, if they do draft Haskins/Lock or trade for Rosen, and still extend Eli, I'll throw my hands in the friggin air because it will make no damn sense eat cap space next year for no reason.
3 year extension, $75 million, with around $50M guaranteed sound about right? With an out after the 2021 season with minimal cap hit?
nope. Fully guaranteed with part ownership as well.
You're being sarcastic. I am not. I believe DG and PS when they tell us that they believe Eli still has "years" left, and that they look at his good games as proof that he still has "it." I don't think they are joking about that.
And if they didn't love Darnold they sure as fuck aren't taking Haskins or any of the other QB's in this draft. Plus they've stated they want Eli to tutor a young QB.
So the most likely plan is to draw a QB in 2020, and keep Eli around until then to mentor him for at least a year (maybe more?). But if they don't get a QB in 2020 they'll need Eli around until at least 2021 then.
I'm not being sarcastic......Britt is correct that this is the most likely course of action.....just listen to what Gettleman, Shurmur and Mara have been telling us, it's all there right in front of us.

I have absolutely no basis to back this up but I have a real gut feeling OBJ gets traded this week.
getting more money and a f-ckin extension than the last 16 ours will have been all for naught.
And it would lead me to believe that Mara said the only way he would allow Gettleman to trade OBJ is for Eli to stay on as QB, and with an extension. That would be an unreal cave-in by DG. And it would lead me to believe there is a huge fracture inside Jints Central that may be irreparable.
My God get a grip we have 12 picks in this draft
if we add Williams RT and someone mentioned Golden
we would have a pretty solid O-line for Barkley
and whomever ends up the starting QB .
If they cut Eli which is a possibility . Then its a
different story .I don't think they will make a play
for Rosen either .If they were in love with him he
would be on the team right now .
Murray isn't in the conversation to me Cards are likely
to take him . Haskins I like him as a player but certainly
not in love with him . They could very well take him at
#6 then keeping Eli one last season makes sense

My sincerest apologies, DK.
One person (to my knowledge) called this. Many wanted it, but that is not the same as "calling it" which DK did.
Mara thinks of Eli like a son. He's honestly like family to him, which is why he canned McAdoo on the spot - even after everyone saying the Giants would NEVER fire a coach mid-season, just was't their way.
When viewed through that prism, he will only get rid of him when he has absolutely no other choice.
But you guys are getting this all wrong. The Giants DONT agree with the narrative that this team is in complete rebuild mode. Th e y LOVE peppers. They aren't looking at the rest of this off-season in the same vein as most here. Right wrong or indifferent. Buckle up kids. Those unhappy now.......maybe unhappy later

This makes total sense. Can you tell us one thing: is Eli getting a 2 year extension or 3 years?

Lol - they're probably about to undo all of the good they just did.
It is a move completely incompatible with trading OBJ, but this team's recent history is to be overly conservative and focused on PR ahead of football. When you look at it that way, an Eli extension makes perfect sense.
Those of us holding out hope for intelligent football moves and sadly no longer expecting them.

thanks jt, keep it coming buddy. I just don't know who is left out there in free agency that even makes this a discussion. Unless they are trading picks for players...which goes against the roster stocking idea. Ugh...I just want to see the Giants win again, is that so wrong?

has dwindled with age and other life stuff that's more important...
but I have some serious anxiety right now. I think it's because after calming down last night, I took peace in the idea that we had just hit rock bottom and it was time to start building in the right direction.
So I'm caught off guard. I'm also highly over-caffeinated today.
Why would anyone be more mad? Eli retiring with a sub .599 career record is going to be HILARIOUS and something that no one will ever let him live down. It will come up in the same breath as his SB wins.

More losing coming up. I hope those that will enjoy the moves that jt is referring to can savor those feelings through the winter, because this is the best of Giants football they're going to have for quite some time.

RE: Shouldn't some of you be at Modell's picking up your
You should expect to see Eli extended and a waive of high priced free agents signed this afternoon. And then you should expect that this team will be bad for many more years to come.
I spent decades being frustrated that the Islanders were run by a pack to rotating clowns. Just as they bring in some adults to take over, the Giants take over for them.
Don't be surprised if Gettleman's successor as GM isn't Alex Tanney.

Now you describe it as hilarious? Maybe I am missing something.

This is so f-cked up that it makes me wonder this...
Did Eli go into Gettleman's office, knowing they wanted to keep him, but with this demand - it's either me or OBJ. What say you?

But I still don't know if this is the direction the franchise should be heading.
I wouldn't say happy. At this point I'm kind of indifferent whether it's Eli or not, but really interested to see it play out.
But the difference between me and a lot of people is I actually can see a plan, with or without Eli.
I can see how he could be a placeholder. A lot of people can't wrap their head around that.
They scream about the money. Well, the extension would reduce that money that seems to be the current issue du jour with it.
Britt, I give you credit if you can see the plan. I know we are getting ahead of ourselves as no one knows what the news is actually going to be. I just feel that this franchise is going to be no better off if they extend Eli, essentially kicking the can down the road.
But I still don't know if this is the direction the franchise should be heading.

That's the one thing I disagree with you about....I don't think Mara will ever ask Eli to take a paycut, which would seem "disrespectful" to Eli. Again I really think Mara sees Eli as a son and you have to account for that when predicting what the Giants will do here.
Its gonna be a 1 year extension to reduce this years cap hit

No. I honestly believe they thought OBJ was under control when they gave him the contract. But the thing that I believe tripped them up was the Lil Wayne interview. I think Mara has a very hard time realizing a guy like OBJ will say a lot of stupid but ultimately harmless things, and decided he had to go.
I think much like the way the Eli benching and response was handled, it was much more about Mara's emotions than based on what made football sense.
RE: If this organization thinks we can compete in 19 with Eli...
Not just 2019. At LEAST into 2020, maybe even into 2021. They don't think he's lost a thing, just like Jonathan Stewart "hasn't lost a step in 10 years."

Not just for his record and stats, but he'll ultimately end up a villain to a legion of Giants fans, who will misplace frustration that should be aimed at management.
RE: You can literally rattle off who the biggest complainers will be.
I won't be happy about it either but some people are just relentless.
I'm still reserving judgement until after the offseason when everything shakes out.
I find it more annoying than productive to throw hissy fits here even when I really don't like what's going on - so, I try not to be that guy.
I won't be happy if we undo what I thought were really positive moves w what we got from CLE (Zeitler, Peppers, 1st, 3rd) by doing the ol' "let's go for it again!" dance with Eli.
It's not Eli's fault. I'm not upset with him. I just wish they'd move on already. It's hurting my heart to watch the guy take all this shit because they can't just let go of him and are so worried about how the fans will react. That's not a way to run things.
I will still let the draft and everything shake out and see what the roster looks like by summer time - but, these rumblings aren't what I was hoping to hear today.

I don't think so. There is enough cushion built up from the notion that Eli's best years were thwarted by the Reese Era.

here just want to hitch on to an idea of the plan on where the franchise is heading. Are the Giants rebuilding or trying to go for it.
Right, wrong or indifferent, the move last night and the speculation of extending Eli so they can now spend in free agency are contractions of one another.
Me personally, that is why I am frustrated. Have a plan, be honest with your fans and stick to it. That is why as a Rangers fan, them making that statement last year was the right thing to do.
think this is still some sort of pro-Eli or anti-Eli referendum. It isn't, but they don't understand that because they don't want to.
It is the idea that this team can't seem to figure out whether it is rebuilding or making a run. I think most on here find the second possibility preposterous.
It is darkly entertaining to see the management continue to pull the "no, THIS time we'll finally build another contender around Eli" strategy that they've been doing since 2013.
like Clowney or something too. Sounds like it'll be splashy based on jt and Hanlon and none of the available free agents outside of Thomas really move the needle.

Yep. I appreciated the way NYR handled that. They were upfront with the fans. They know we hated watching all of the guys who made the great runs we had happen go (mostly) south to Tampa (and a few other scattered places) and knew it was going to be tough to see the team sink all the way down near the bottom like this... but ultimately, they realized that the window had closed and it was time to build a new foundation.
Now, we still have Hank looming... sort of similar to Eli in a lot of ways. I suspect moving on from him may be about as much of a challenge as this is... but at least in the case of the Rangers, we've got a nice little prospect over in the KHL who has been outstanding and some reason for post-Hank hope.
(Sorry, that's a lot of NHL for a football thread - but you get my point)
There's just too much teetering here. I was hoping yesterday meant we were just going to tear this entire band aid off in one swoop... but it seems like we still want to handle the Eli part hair by painful hair. :/
RE: RE: RE: You can literally rattle off who the biggest complainers will be.
It's not Eli's fault. I'm not upset with him. I just wish they'd move on already. It's hurting my heart to watch the guy take all this shit because they can't just let go of him and are so worried about how the fans will react. That's not a way to run things.
Indoubtably! Well said
Hmmmm. So you actually agree with this...interesting.
Not just for his record and stats, but he'll ultimately end up a villain to a legion of Giants fans, who will misplace frustration that should be aimed at management.
Strong Agree. Eli has been the best QB the Giants have ever had. But an extension is just so unlikely to end well and as he hangs on in sub 500 seasons he will be seen as the problem, instead of where he should be seen. Aside from his own play, he's been poorly served by the front office. It's unlikely for that to turn around in time for him to have "one more good run".
I won't blame him a bit for taking Mara's money if he wants to, though.

To be fair, Fatman hasn't been as pro-Eli as you would think this offseason. He's said a couple of times that if they could find a way to replace his production at a cheaper cost, they should, and that an extension would just be kicking the can down the road.
I like that DG is going for it and making big moves. The position is not too big for him and he doesn't play it safe or scared. That said, it's on him. This needs to work. I want a new QB but want to win more than have my say who is behind center. Just win bebe.
Pro-Eli for a long time in that I have been on record saying he should be replaced. I was critical of McAdoo for not getting webb reps and Shurmur for not getting Lauletta reps, as well as wanting a QB in last year's draft .
I argue more about the idiots who concoct ridiculous scenarios on how the giants are indebted to Eli and will do anything in their power to get him another Super Bowl.
the more difficult the argument is that Eli belongs in the hall of fame. Add one or two more 5-11 seasons to his record and he is a QB that is below .500 winning percentage across a long career with one team. He will also have losing records for 7 out of 8 or 8 out of 9 years to close his career.
What is the argument you make for that guy? "Well you have to keep in mind he played for the Giants, and nobody could have won there for the past decade."
It is possible to love Eli and pray like hell the Giants move on from him.
Father Time waits for nobody... Sentiment doesnt win football games or build a future... FUCK
This is it right here. 38 is the magic number. Brady and Moon overcame it. Favre had a weird run: played terrible at 39, magnificent at 40, then terrible again at 41.
Brees played well at 39 but declined considerably over the course of the season.
There are no other examples of QBs playing well past this point.

So when they come out today and say they think they can win and compete with Eli, and feel great about their moves, the upcoming draft, etc, etc - and they are going to say this - you will once again do the Fat-Mara two-step and begin another torturous off-season of defending your heroes at Jints Central.

John Elway won a Superbowl at 38.
Kurt Warner made a Superbowl and almost won it at 38.
Peyton Manning made two Superbowls after 38 and won one at 40, and that was including after coming of what could have been a career ending 4 neck surgeries in two years.
Phil Simms took the Giants to 11-5 and made the playoffs at 38.
Kurt Warner made a Superbowl and almost won it at 38.
Peyton Manning made two Superbowls after 38 and won one at 40, and that was including after coming of what could have been a career ending 4 neck surgeries in two years.
Yes, Elway and Warner did at age 38. Age 39 is where the fallout typically happens. That was my point.
Peyton won his superbowl at age 39, and he was...not very good!
JTGiants shot down Rosen but not the Eli speculation here. And if hes saying this idiotic front office thinks the Giants can win now and that people here will be unhappy, you can pretty much guess theyll be extending Eli at 4. DSG is a failure if epic proportions, and I really dont know any other way to put it. If you thought it was going to take time to undo Reeses damage, just wait until we have to repair the pillage DSG has brought upon us.
You people who are happy should be ashamed of yourselves. If this front office thinks the Giants can compete they should all be fired on the spot immediately. I really dont know how else to put it.
He's under contract through next year and the Giants will have a huge amount of cap space then. It would give Seattle $17M in cap space this year.
I'd give up the 6th pick for him in a NY minute. I'd throw in some of those 5th rounders as well. Seattle does pretty well in the draft even in the lower rounds.
I know I'm dreaming but I'd be all for getting Wilson.
his four neck surgeries and losing ALL strength in his throwing arm for a year not knowing whether it would ever come back probably had a LOT more to do with him being cooked than his age did.
Those are great examples, however, the key with all of those teams actually had talent.
The Giants are far from a finished product for the 2019 season right now, but you are kidding yourself if you think surrounding this 38 QB with this roster is even close to being the same.
Kurt Warner made a Superbowl and almost won it at 38.
Peyton Manning made two Superbowls after 38 and won one at 40, and that was including after coming of what could have been a career ending 4 neck surgeries in two years.
And all of them were better quarterbacks than Eli Manning when they were younger. What's your point?
if the plan was to make a run with a 38 year old qb
If the Giants want to have Eli start and Play out his contract in 2019, I can see SOME logic in doing it even if I disagree, because there are a number of examples of QBs playing well at 38.
It's the extension that is foolish, because there are few examples of QBs playing well past age 38.

Is it me, or is that inside info we receive overwhelmingly negative? Dont get me wrong; I like the info. Maybe its because we want things and the info just quashes it. But its we want Rosen - too bad no. No extension for Eli - well, youre getting 5 more years of him. This team is rebuilding - no theyre not.
At some point, it would be great to see, we want a trade up for Murray - guess what, youre actually getting that.
I look forward to that day. I hope I live to see it.

Sorry but it was for many of us. I was done with Bckham after the lifting the leg deal and it never got any better. The same is true of most of our circle of Giants fans which admittedly doesn't include many millenials...thank God.

To be fair - I think Mara has probably been a bit TOO sensitive to the common Giant fans wants and wishes - and thats part of what the problem was to begin with.
Gettleman seems to be fine playing bad cop if need be.
I think it's time to stop worrying about the fans and build the team the right way.
is also going to command over 10M annually. After trading OBJ and committing to him as the #1 at that cost? John Brown got 3 for 27, Funchess got a 1 year deal at 13M. Don't want any part of him at that price.
He had 11 games last year where had under 50 yards. Yes, I know he was the #2/3 WR there, but that's not inspiring any confidence in me.

guess is one or both of Eli and Zeitler will be restructured, freeing up money that will then be used to sign one or two FAs. Extending Eli probably reduces the chance of taking a QB this year.

Keenen Allen is a target hog.
Williams often produced when he was given looks.
He's a good player.
He's a good player, but he's not a player to commit $10M+ annually as a top target WR.
Look at his 2016 numbers when Keenan Allen missed the entire season with the kidney laceration. Only 3 games above 100 yards. This is my fear. We try and make up for the lost OBJ production by grossly overpaying marginal players. Tyrell this year, SS's extension next year. Screams to me like the Yanks letting Cano go, and trying to replace him with Ells. Game Log - ( New Window )
then isn't the timing of the OBJ trade and (potential) Eli restructure/extend way off?
Free agency is 80% over before it starts these days...weren't these moves for like 2 weeks ago if they were really about freeing up capacity to field a good team in 2019?
Don't get me wrong -- I'd rather just bank as much of the space as possible rather than spend on 2019, but something about the timing of it all just doesn't seem to gel with the idea that they feel like competitive winners for 2019.
In 2016 he managed 69 catches for 1059 and 7 scores in 12 starts. His overall body of work was really solid for a guy who was thrust into duty a bit prematurely. He was actually better this past year, the numbers just aren't as good because he saw less looks. But he did more with them.
He's definitely had boom or bust weeks - he has some TY Hilton in him in that regard, but if we're looking at what's out there - he's probably the guy to go after. Ascending player, still young.
It's slim pickings out there. We are definitely going to need to draft someone.
Williams is not exciting. That would undersell the OP and Hanlon
I really hope that extending Eli is not the news. Not because I didn't get my way, but because I think it would be awful for the franchise. If they do, I hope we win and make the playoffs but our roster doesn't match up well with the rest of the division.
RE: If Eli gets restructured, then maybe they are looking at 2020
If you're looking for a guy to stretch the field so that Engram and Barkley can operate as receivers underneath, he's not a bad option to do that.
Would have to see the cost, though. These FA deals have been ridiculously overpriced.
Spotrac has his market value @ 9.8M per - my guess is he gets like 3-4 years. If we can get him close to market value and not grossly overpay, I'd like it.
(I hope so) and then will still implement the mythical Mahomes model.
Maybe the couple it with a Zeitler restructure. Somehow though, I don't see them needing a ton of money this year (other than RT).
How about Jackrabbit for a young, controlled (potential #1) WR? Anyone available? I know it would leave them one more corner short, but still...
Nothing like waiting til year 4 of Barkley to finally pair him with your next QB for a full season.
Also who is trading a potential #1 WR for a 30+ corner with a $15 million cap hit?
True, it is a long wait. But then again I want a good QB after Eli. Not just the any QB will do guy that many here want. And, I wold be just as happy to go with Lauletta for a season while waiting for someone good. And re the trade, I was asking; I don't know. But that's our last available trade chit and a new glaring need. SO just some musing.
One possible cheap option is to trade for John Ross from Cincy
If we're simply talking about getting a guy to just run "9" routes to occupy a safety so that Barkley, Engram, and hopefully drafted TE can operate underneath, it might not be something that we have to spend a lot on.
Ross isn't a great player, but he's fast. This is where Shurmur's ability to design an offense would come in.
Hockenson would definitely be a target for me. I'd want to pair him with Ellison as the TEs on the line, and use Engram as a Swiss Army knife.
I wrote about him on one of the other threads. If the Giants are going to feature more of a running game, then go out and get TEs who are matchup problems for smaller DBs and too fast for safeties. Engram isn't much of a blocker (maybe "willing" at best), but Hockenson is getting looked at by the Patriots which is enough for me to pay attention. Using #17 on him and going to more 2 TE sets in which the Giants can be dangerous both running and passing, taking advantage of Barkley's two way abilities, and a better offensive line, the Giants could find a new wrinkle in the age of the 4 WRs.
Desir back to Indy. Scratch two possible moves off the list.
I don't really want either of those guys. The Giants can find a WR with one of their many mid round picks. As Sy and others have said, why overpay for a free agent now when you can just pick one and get the same production (and develop them).

All onboard with Hock at 17 and operating out of mostly 2 and 3 TE sets. If you're going to run a Barkley-centric offense, that's the way to do it. They're missing a true pass threat from TE that can actually block though, so Hockenson would be key.
but i think if you go for him, you unload engram. i think he's more valuable in a trade than for the giants. he played less than half the snaps last year in the games he played. if they can unload in exchange for a good pick and grab the Iowa TE who is a true two way TE i think that would optimal

Drafting Hockenson is more of a reason to keep Engram. Think Pats earlier this decade with Gronk and Hernandez.

The Eagles traded up in the 2nd round last year to draft Dallas Goedert despite having Zach Ertz at TE. TE's are a young QB's best friends and if the Giants intend to take one this year or next then I would be happy with adding a good two way TE to allow Engram to split out wide more frequently.

I must admit I fucking dying for information today. Most I have ever been on this site. Equally excited and apprehensive. I just wish whatever they announce gives us some hope.
Think its gonna be nothing MAJOR? Lol. I really want it to be something worth all this hype, but Im not gonna get my hopes up. But we need some good news.

I believe for sure there will be movement. The breath and scope will be in the eye of the beholder.
I was told we have multiple balls in the air. They expected at least 2 of them to work out today but these things are never an exact science until there officially handled. Well see. What I can say is what I posted earlier is true. The Giants aren't throwing in the towel on the season. Not happening

Eli holding out for "Aaron Rodgers" money. Sites Superbowl victories and acting ability.
Gettleman typing un fake computer is unable to come up with stats to argue with him.
They are at an uncomfortable stalemate involving Gettleman saying "I'll get rid of anyone" (Eli not listening instead reading emotionally supportive texts from Mara who is listening from the next room)

Appreciate the update. I think people forget theres way too many moving parts in the league. How many things that are discussed in the front come true? Even though we're in the information age i'm sure theres a ton of "rumors" or "discussions" that never come to light. If you believe that the source is in the know.
Not that I expect them to come out and say "we are punting the 2019 season" - but it sounds like they are going to actively really try and win this year - which is petrifying knowing that there really aren't a series of moves that can possibly get us there.
More likely, those moves just keep us kicking this can down the road like morons. Next thing you know, 10 years have gone by and we haven't seen a playoff game...
I really hope someone in that front office can muster up some sense here.
I applaud them for saying that but they are a virtual lock for a top 3 pick this time next season, if not #1 overall. I dont care what DG does this offseason from this point forward, theyre not going to surpass Dallas or Philadelphia and are at worst equal with Washington right now.

Also, i read this as more than just a FA signing if we're "not throwing in the towel" for this year. I'd assume the deals in discussion are big, not a FA DB and EDGE

JT, no problem. Shit happens and nothing ever comes off without a hitch. Can you answer yes or no, do you have any idea what the plan at WR is going forward?
Quite possible the the handshake deals they had with some FA's fell apart after the FA's saw that the Giants have become a national joke of a franchise. Dead serious about this.

But just maybe nobody wants to come here, and would rather take 1 yr "prove it" deals elsewhere... Does Hanlon & Giant brass think its "a privilege" to be an NYG?

Cant blame them. Not easy to prove it on a dumpster fire of a team.
Would it be possible to share if the news that was expected today, was going to be from a trade or free agent signing?
Interested as well. I got the sense It was a trade for him to say were not throwing away the seaso ...the available free agents wouldnt change the current state of the giants

It's probably some combo of the above.
Yup it crashed for me too.
Granted the Wilson stuff is probably a pipe dream.
Exactly.
If they can get anything for him - I think they flip him.
Maybe to add another 1st round pick? Otherwise it doesn't make sense.

Agree with this, which is why I hate these teaser threads. I will get my hopes up for this kind of move and then find out we pried Case Keenum away from the Redskins for a 3rd.

Hah, yep. That's why I won't even let myself think about that.
Wilson is fantastic. He never misses games, he knows how to protect his body and I have quite a bit of faith that he will stay very productive for 5+ years. He's the ideal QB for what the league is right now.

That's why I said 2+. I know it would take more than a 2.
Ha! Same here. I had something i recorded on TV, and had to switch over to the NFLN, because I though something happened and BBI went down!

Oh got it. Oh well, not that its going to say anything worthwhile.
One of the best track records here.
Agreed.. I think people will be surprised where things go today/this week. If you are ever in the Charleston, SC would love to meet up with ya.
dear god, can you think beyond this moment? You think we stay with what we have now at WR?
That would rule out a vet trade/Wilson.
I'm wondering if it's Rosen, except the Giants plan is still rolling with Eli for one more year at some type of reduced salary?

Correct he said Elis here next year.

I think it does. Rosen was thrown to the wolves last year. He would benefit for sitting, at least part of the year, and learning.
Has Slade returned? Please tell me no.
Jay, I've had my moments and heard a few whispers that I"ve posted, but I don't know anything going on this year. If I hear something, I'll say something. In the meantime, I'm deferring to jt and hitdog.
I want the fall and winter to be fun. That hasn't been the case for years. Days like we've had recently are the reason why watching this team has been awful for so long.
so true

Hitdog hasn't suppied any info this week. I wonder if he has contacts still?
And they will announce a two year contract extension for Eli.
BBI is going to implode if that's the case.
BBI is going to implode if that's the case.
Entertainment at its highest!
BBI is going to implode if that's the case.
Yikes.

if that changes- ill obviously post here. but dont have the time anymore
I'd call it a solid run- and will defer to the next generation!
BBI is going to implode if that's the case.
I don't think signing Williams at RT would make us implode. I think that would be a good signing no matter what our plan is. All pro caliber RT who is 26 years old. Get him in here on a 4 or 5 year deal.

Well if you're done sharing then I just want to thank you for all the information that you shared with us.
The obsession with the Collins Como pick is reaching Saints second rounder in the Shockley deal level absurdity
Comp pick for next year would be nice. I think Giants have bigger issues right now.
BBI is going to implode if that's the case.
Please dont mean extension.
3 year extension, $75 million, with around $50M guaranteed sound about right? With an out after the 2021 season with minimal cap hit?
Though, if we're being fair, you also told us that 2018 would be "Eli's Revenge Tour."
BBI is going to implode if that's the case.
Oh Christ.

It was kind of - if the revenge he was seeking was on the Giants for benching him.
Maybe when Eli gets his extension it was just delayed a year or so.
Speech!!! Speech!!!
If it's an Eli extension, it's going to take a lot of self control for me not to scream and fly off the handle.
I'm willing to give them some room to prove that this OBJ trade has them thinking and moving in the right direction.
Extending Eli would be the direct opposite of that.
This is what I would expect..
Then I expect some of that money to go toward getting a RT and some other help..

Dog,
You made BBI insane for a while. Thanks for all the info in the past. Please share if you hear anything. Thanks.
It really is that easy. The tea leaves the past couple years have been so easy to read. Crystal clear, nearly.
Surprised so many get it wrong.

Them not spending wild money on sought after FA has been unpredictable because of what happened last year and in 2016. So that has been shocking to me.

A new contract???
A new weapon?

Ahem... ;)
Danny Kanell : 3/11/2019 1:05 pm : link : reply
I have absolutely no basis to back this up but I have a real gut feeling OBJ gets traded this week.
And it would lead me to believe that Mara said the only way he would allow Gettleman to trade OBJ is for Eli to stay on as QB, and with an extension. That would be an unreal cave-in by DG. And it would lead me to believe there is a huge fracture inside Jints Central that may be irreparable.
if we add Williams RT and someone mentioned Golden
we would have a pretty solid O-line for Barkley
and whomever ends up the starting QB .

When viewed through that prism, he will only get rid of him when he has absolutely no other choice.
This makes total sense. Can you tell us one thing: is Eli getting a 2 year extension or 3 years?
jt, I think you and I have been on the same page all year. Eager to see if that has carried over.
Lol - they're probably about to undo all of the good they just did.
Cant wait.
Those of us holding out hope for intelligent football moves and sadly no longer expecting them.
thanks jt, keep it coming buddy. I just don't know who is left out there in free agency that even makes this a discussion. Unless they are trading picks for players...which goes against the roster stocking idea. Ugh...I just want to see the Giants win again, is that so wrong?
desir, golden, and williams today
Wonderful, more evidence that the Giants are run by delusional clowns.

I would guess one year extension. No idea on numbers.
Why? Watching the Giants suck for yet another season will be more than enough for most of us. No need to spend any money.
I spent decades being frustrated that the Islanders were run by a pack to rotating clowns. Just as they bring in some adults to take over, the Giants take over for them.
Don't be surprised if Gettleman's successor as GM isn't Alex Tanney.
If the Giants continue not to overspend for mediocre talent and draft well, I will be happy.
Posters are looking at this all wrong, not surprisingly.
I thought you were getting on fans the other day for being "happy" that Eli may finish his career below .500?
Now you describe it as hilarious? Maybe I am missing something.
Maybe you're too busy chasing your tail with hope that Eli's record sails below .500 because that would, what? Make you happy?
Apparently so.

That's the one thing I disagree with you about....I don't think Mara will ever ask Eli to take a paycut, which would seem "disrespectful" to Eli. Again I really think Mara sees Eli as a son and you have to account for that when predicting what the Giants will do here.

Not just 2019. At LEAST into 2020, maybe even into 2021. They don't think he's lost a thing, just like Jonathan Stewart "hasn't lost a step in 10 years."
I'll be you a dollar he gets a raise. No way Mara disrespects him by asking him to take a reduced salary in 2020.
Well that is just dumb because cutting Eli creates the most cap space.
What a fuckin ride...

I won't be happy if we undo what I thought were really positive moves w what we got from CLE (Zeitler, Peppers, 1st, 3rd) by doing the ol' "let's go for it again!" dance with Eli.

Ugh. What a rebuilding plan. Eli will play into his 40's I expect.
It is the idea that this team can't seem to figure out whether it is rebuilding or making a run. I think most on here find the second possibility preposterous.

Hmmmm. So you actually agree with this...interesting.
Stop w the Rosen nonsense. Not Happening

To be fair, Fatman hasn't been as pro-Eli as you would think this offseason. He's said a couple of times that if they could find a way to replace his production at a cheaper cost, they should, and that an extension would just be kicking the can down the road.
Father Time waits for nobody... Sentiment doesnt win football games or build a future... FUCK
I argue more about the idiots who concoct ridiculous scenarios on how the giants are indebted to Eli and will do anything in their power to get him another Super Bowl.

Just that it's not the unicorn it's being made out to be.
And had a team around him.
He also made it with them at 38, and was not cooked.

Yes, Elway and Warner did at age 38. Age 39 is where the fallout typically happens. That was my point.
Peyton won his superbowl at age 39, and he was...not very good!
You people who are happy should be ashamed of yourselves. If this front office thinks the Giants can compete they should all be fired on the spot immediately. I really dont know how else to put it.
I'd give up the 6th pick for him in a NY minute. I'd throw in some of those 5th rounders as well. Seattle does pretty well in the draft even in the lower rounds.
I know I'm dreaming but I'd be all for getting Wilson.
LOL. Me at work. I'm useless today.

Peyton was clearly a passenger along for the ride when he won the Superbowl in Denver. He was completely cooked.

His team was knocked out in the 2nd round by the Colts and he didn't look very good in that game.
Try not to jump off bridges just yet about an Eli extension, so far thats purely BBI conjecture about what he means by fun day
The Giants are far from a finished product for the 2019 season right now, but you are kidding yourself if you think surrounding this 38 QB with this roster is even close to being the same.

Kurt Warner made a Superbowl and almost won it at 38.

And all of them were better quarterbacks than Eli Manning when they were younger. What's your point?
It's the extension that is foolish, because there are few examples of QBs playing well past age 38.
Two solid asshats saying no on Rosen. Let's just hope there is more news then an extension for Eli.
Any thoughts on an Eli extension prior to Sunday?

Is it me, or is that inside info we receive overwhelmingly negative? Dont get me wrong; I like the info. Maybe its because we want things and the info just quashes it. But its we want Rosen - too bad no. No extension for Eli - well, youre getting 5 more years of him. This team is rebuilding - no theyre not.
At some point, it would be great to see, we want a trade up for Murray - guess what, youre actually getting that.
I look forward to that day. I hope I live to see it.

Unless you're predicting a successful season for the Giants, because there isn't going to be another one of those for quite some time.
Yes, he's pretty good.
Huh? He's by far the best WR on the open market and he proves much needed size.
LOL.
He had 11 games last year where had under 50 yards. Yes, I know he was the #2/3 WR there, but that's not inspiring any confidence in me.

Keenen Allen is a target hog.
Williams often produced when he was given looks.
He's a good player.

I have to go with Golden Tate as the best WR, but he is more of a slot guy so I am guessing you mean outside WRs.

is also going to command over 10M annually. After trading OBJ and committing to him as the #1 at that cost? John Brown got 3 for 27, Funchess got a 1 year deal at 13M. Don't want any part of him at that price.

He's definitely had boom or bust weeks - he has some TY Hilton in him in that regard, but if we're looking at what's out there - he's probably the guy to go after. Ascending player, still young.
It's slim pickings out there. We are definitely going to need to draft someone.
We actually need a lot of "good" and less "exciting" right now.
But I'll take both, please!
Maybe the couple it with a Zeitler restructure. Somehow though, I don't see them needing a ton of money this year (other than RT).
How about Jackrabbit for a young, controlled (potential #1) WR? Anyone available? I know it would leave them one more corner short, but still...
Would have to see the cost, though. These FA deals have been ridiculously overpriced.

Nothing like waiting til year 4 of Barkley to finally pair him with your next QB for a full season.
Also who is trading a potential #1 WR for a 30+ corner with a $15 million cap hit?

Spotrac has his market value @ 9.8M per - my guess is he gets like 3-4 years. If we can get him close to market value and not grossly overpay, I'd like it.

Ross isn't a great player, but he's fast. This is where Shurmur's ability to design an offense would come in.
Hockenson would definitely be a target for me. I'd want to pair him with Ellison as the TEs on the line, and use Engram as a Swiss Army knife.
It sure looks like it. Perhaps not down to the absolute nuts and bolts while Eli's still here, but they've been ripping up the roster for a year.

Agree...Bavaro 2.0
Seems like its not Rosen, and Wilson seems farfetched..
Not sure if a Eli extension is "fun"
Drafting Hockenson is more of a reason to keep Engram. Think Pats earlier this decade with Gronk and Hernandez.

I guess it would be fun if you enjoyed triggering fans that don't want him to remain QB beyond 2019...which would probably be a majority.
I mean, if you can't succeed at winning, might as well pivot to trolling your own fanbase.
The Eagles traded up in the 2nd round last year to draft Dallas Goedert despite having Zach Ertz at TE. TE's are a young QB's best friends and if the Giants intend to take one this year or next then I would be happy with adding a good two way TE to allow Engram to split out wide more frequently.
jt would have some 'splainin to do
Thats the thing with Elis extension... we didnt need to wait until 4 to get it done. Unless we were waiting for Gettleman to finish dinner first 😂

I believe for sure there will be movement. The breath and scope will be in the eye of the beholder.
Well the Beckham trade did come out at 8:00 PM.
There's still plenty of time for BBI to have back-to-back meltdown days.
trying to get situated for the big surprise....kidding...
Trades of FA signings? Can you elaborate a tad?
Gettleman typing un fake computer is unable to come up with stats to argue with him.
They are at an uncomfortable stalemate involving Gettleman saying "I'll get rid of anyone" (Eli not listening instead reading emotionally supportive texts from Mara who is listening from the next room)
Translation:
Daryl Williams and somebody else signed elsewhere
Thanks for the information update. Eli in 2019 is a given then, but I wonder what other deals they have cooking.
Appreciate the update - I think most of us know at the end of the day, this stuff isn't an exact science and is usually very fluid.
Sounds like things are brewing .
I am having a horribly unproductive work week. Holy hell.
They're even bigger buffoons than I thought. Someone tell Mara to turn off WFAN in the office and put on his big boy pants.
Also, i read this as more than just a FA signing if we're "not throwing in the towel" for this year. I'd assume the deals in discussion are big, not a FA DB and EDGE

Stealth tank mode.
Hrm.
Hrm.
Its on right now.
Trying to tie in "big moves" with trading away a HOF-caliber talent. What's the big move? Signing a decent DE? Trading a draft pick for a decent RT?
Great. Fucking great.
Hrm.
There scrambling because FA's are backing out of their verbal agreements with Giants after seeing what a shitshow this franchise has become.

Interested as well. I got the sense It was a trade for him to say were not throwing away the seaso ...the available free agents wouldnt change the current state of the giants
