So in all, the Giants sent Odell Beckham and Olivier Vernon to the Browns for G Kevin Zeitler, S Jabrill Peppers, a first-round pick (17th overall) and a third-round pick (95th).

When you look at this as one deal, and when you compare it to what other top WRs (Amari Cooper, Antonio Brown, Jarvis Landry) recently brought back in trade, and consider the Giants were probably going to cut Olivier Vernon, this is a really good trade by Dave Gettleman.

Losing a talent like Odell Beckham hurts, obviously. Even after the picks are used, hes almost certain to be the biggest talent in the trade. But Gettleman got some very valuable pieces to set the Giants up for their future. And the future is what this whole thing is about.

Agreed i like this trade.
Put like this I like it
PatersonPlank : 3/13/2019 11:20 am : link
We offload a guy we were offloading anyway, a talented WR who unfortunately hasn't helped much the past few years and is a little bit of a headcase, for 2 immediate starters in positions of need plus a 1st rd and 3rd rd pick
as one trade it is even worse
Mr. Nickels : 3/13/2019 11:21 am : link
Vernon for Zeitler was a STEAL

Not to defend the trade, but Zeitler is a good football player and probably the best OL we've had since Snee retired.
You guys can spin it or justify it to yourselves

It's an awful trade. We're a laughing stock.

the Giants did Ok. Comparing it to the Cooper trade and they did awful. Beckham >>>>> Cooper and they got marginally more in return (last pick of 3rd round and Peppers).
I've honestly never seen a trade....

What did you expect?

Amari Cooper netted a 1st round pick
AB netted a 3rd and 5th

What did you think you can get for a guy that is a DIVA, has played in one playoff game, has a big contract and averages missing 4 games per season?
Additionally with this trade

Look at any trade for a superstar, regardless of the sport. There's been some NBA trades that were far worse.
Dust settles
Thegratefulhead : 3/13/2019 11:26 am : link
I think this will look like a good move when all the shit leaks. We are Giant fans. That ESPN made ownership INSANE, bet on it. I am extremely suspicious about the end of the season. I suspect, they disciplined Odell as much as they could under the CBA and OBJ practiced all week then sat games. Usually works the other way, limited or no practice so you play in the game. If you look at it from the perspective of that ownership wanted him off the team, they kept it hidden and they got as much as they could without showing their hand. Cut Eli, trade for Rosen, sign D Williams and shorten the game as you smash people in the mouth to protect your D while the horde of defensive talent you draft this year shapes into form.

AB is 5 years older and Amari Cooper had been absolutely horrendous for the past 2 seasons with the Raiders. They're not comparable trades at all.

And if we didn't get two first round picks (Jabril Peppers would have netted a mid round pick at best), or at minimum a HIGH one and a two then I wouldn't have traded the best WR in football. HORRENDOUS trade.
if we're in tear down rebuild mode
bluepepper : 3/13/2019 11:30 am : link
then why Zeitler? He's 29. Not a spring chicken in football terms. Yes some OL play into their mid 30-s but it's a tough business. Snee was shot at 31. Joe Thomas who was the ultimate war horse retired at 33. Would be no big shock if in two years we have to replace both Zeitler and Solder who's 31.

Marginally? the Giants basically got 2 firsts (the #17 and Peppers who was a first) and a 3rd. Plus I think Peppers is going to be a great player.

It's hilarious how the haters on this board, elsewhere and particularly in the media are bashing this somewhat. I am so thrilled with this trade I don't know what to do with myself. We saved a few cap dollars this year and more next year. Who cares about the dead money. What's done is done, we can't go back to last year. Peppers right away..right now is better than limited landon. First rd pick for cheap for 5 years a 3rd rounder for cheap for 4.

Guys that want to be Giants. I really want a new QB as part of this, however if we deal with our 2 time winning superbowl qb for one more year its not the worst thing. Regardless for the 2020 free agent haul we are getting Eli's 22 million off the cap. I really do want that qb right now though. It is time. Maybe we like Drew lock a lot and draft him with 17 or haskins at 6. I like the idea of getting rosen with our 2nd rounder jettisoning eli , signing golden tate and using the first 2 picks on the best defensive 1st round most experts can remember.

In the last 32 games Odell has missed 18 due to injury. How about factoring that in as well. He is now a definite injury risk. I am thrilled..thrilled to get rid of an injury prone, me first dumb ass. His disrespectful ways and throwing teammates under the bus will never be missed by this fan. Did I say injury prone and missed the last 18 of 32 games? Oh yeah I did. I will miss all those big plays he made last year..oh yeah he didn't make any of those either.

Bravo bravo and bravo to Gettleman and Co.
Zeitler and Vernon were both rumored to be cap casualties

of their respective teams. Why they feel the need to plug these two separate trades together is beyond me.
Looks bad
Cap'n Bluebeard : 3/13/2019 11:32 am : link
on paper, and it really all depends on the players we end up getting. I'm guessing this will end poorly for us. #17 isn't likely to end up as a superstar, #95 is a coinflip as to whether or not they end up as a productive player, and there's no way Peppers will be re-signed if Dave "I don't pay safeties" Gettlemen is still here in 3 years. Knowing the Giants, even if he's not here, he (and Accorsi) will handpick a replacement that subscribes to the same team building philosophy.

TL;DR - We traded Beckham, a top 5 talent at an important position under long-term contract in his prime, for what will most likely amount to a decent player and two guys who could very well be off the team in 3 years.
Josh, I get your sentiments
Keaton028 : 3/13/2019 11:33 am : link
but we wont know the merits of this trade for some time. OBJ will likely have some nice seasons in Cleveland, but we dont know if that will win them shit. Conversely, the Giants may rebuild this team with solid picks and acquisitions from the trenches out, and could be a perennial competitor. Saying the trade was HORRENDOUS now is a bit over the top.

towards Shurmur in the other thread (Anita Marks). Barely made an impact to the Giants over the past 2-3 years, and is a head case on top.

AcidTest : 3/13/2019 11:42 am : link
don't see this as one trade.

OV and Zeitler were two players who were likely to be cut, so the trade made sense for both teams.

The Giants wanted to trade Beckham. They were tired of his "antics," which to me were never that bad. But their desire to trade him drove down his price, and pretty much assured that the acquiring team would get the better end of that trade. It's done. Let's move on to the rest of FA and the draft.
OBJ's best years were being wasted here on a team
Reese's Pieces : 3/13/2019 11:43 am : link
not in contention. Yet we were paying him as if he were vitally needed to make a run at something.

I thought that this would happen. DG purged the defense of four of the five players who were AP All Pro in 2016, also threw out former All Pro JPP.

He hadn't replace any of them until he signed the veteran safety yesterday.

If there are five defensive starters to replace, along with finding your new quarterback, you need major assets to return to contention within half a decade.

OBJ was expendable because they had added Barkly, another explosive player who could strike from anywhere.

I didn't want to see him go, but when Gettleman purged the defense, no other option to finding replacements for them.

Football is not like Basketball in that you dont always win with star power. You win when the parts play together in a strong system. Sure having talent helps but getting them to play together as one well functioning unit is the biggest thing (see Patriots).
