My Theory

Mkdaman1818 : 3/13/2019 11:30 am
My theory to explain the moves made by gettleman...

1. Gettleman comes in and Mara mandates that we make one last run with Eli, partly because of the way Mcadoo handled the benching etc. I’m sure Gettleman wanted to rebuild, but Mara says go for it. So we sign Odell long term (thinking if he’s franchised that it’ll be a distraction that will hurt our chances of making a run) sign Solder, and take Barkley, thinking that having Solder and a star RB like Barkley will help the offensive line enough.

2. We start the year and get the crap beaten out of us. As we are getting out of it, we trade Eli Apple and Snacks, as we know we need cap space and assets (picks) going forward

3. Odell pulls more crap during the year, further pissing off Shurmur and Gettleman. This makes him expendable, as his character seems to overshadow his talent.

4. After last season, Gettleman convinces Mara that we need to rebuild and we’re far away from contending. Gettleman is in asset collecting mode, and wants to clean house of all the Jerry Reese/big money contracts.

To me this is the only timeline that makes sense. Now we see what they do with Eli, and how we address our future including the QB.
Nailed it

What really hurts is giving OBJ the contract bad judgement.
I think that is on point

The dead money only affects this year and I don't think we are playing for this year anymore.
The biggest problem

Is that we have a GM taking orders from the owner. That is how bad franchises are run.
What other option was there for OBJ

You were not going to get what the Giants got yesterday before proving that the injury was healed. By signing him they got full control of the situation. I don't care much about the dead money this year, because the Giants are not making a run this year. (though I think they will be better than people think)

I believe Mara had a long talk with OBJ just prior to that contract. OBJ said what Mara wanted to hear and then got paid. Afterward OBJ just did what OBJ wishes to do...

In hindsight yes(ok yes maybe a little foresight too). But they had to sign him for multiple reasons considering the distraction he would have become, fan unrest, etc.

Foresight is, he's moving to a tough hitting division. If there are any teams more know for their cheap shots in the league than the three others in that division I don't know of any. Beckham better be wary over the middle.
C'mon.

It doesn't get past step one:

Gettleman was hired to be GM. Are you implying that this mandate came to him after he was hired? Don't you think this would have been covered in great detail during the hiring process?

Gettleman had to be onboard with the strategy they employed the first year, if not completely responsible for it.

in me tells me Mara is getting out of the way. This is finally Gettleman's team to run now and we're watching it play out in front of our eyes.

IMO, so far, so good.

If we had a playmaking QB, none of this is relevant

We have a play making Quarterback. We need a boat load of pieces that are far worse than the quarterback position. When the time comes, Eli will be replaced, hopefully getting a good QB to learn from him. Eli haters siting Eli as the problem here, is simply ignorance. Our defense lost most of the games...

Does the contract really hurt past the 2019 season. It probably helped us get the compensation we did cause they know hes signed.

Was it really? As a new GM, was the first thing he was supposed to do be to cut Beckham before he ever played for him? How would that have gone over, exactly, do you think? This being before Barkley ever played an NFL snap, mind you. It was a political impossibility. The fans would have cannibalized him out of the gate. As it is it may yet be his undoing. He had to give it a shot. As for Schurmur, it was his duty to try his best to make it work with Odell,as it is with any player on the payroll, which, by all counts, he did.

Sometimes sacrifices have to be made. You slash and burn before you plant a new field, after the old one goes
