if they were to extend it would put them in a better financial situation this year .. which your guess doesn't seem to do ... otherwise whats the benefit? Is Eli demanding extension...?
Eli has always made more than Ben and Rivers, don't see why Mara would ask him to take less than them now. Would kind of be a slap in the face to Eli, no? You really see Mara insulting him like that?
we are taking on as much of a cap hit as possible this year and moving on. This doesn’t fit in that plan.
0 years, no more money.
Extending him makes sense if DG feels he needs the cap space this year to sign a specific player.
This obviously kicks the cap hit to next year but we will be able to absorb that much better next year. Depending on a lot of variables we are looking at $80M-$90M in space next year.

If i's a 2 or 3 year extension it easily can lower his cap it for this year. But that won't be the main purpose, the main purpose it to lock him up until we have a successor QB in place.
Rivers has a good team, so they can compete at his age 37 and age 38 seasons and make a decision from there.
Extending Big Ben beyond this year might be a problem, but he still played very well last year. The problem is that a lot of QBs play great at age 38 then fall off hard.
Maybe to lessen cap hit, but does anyone think Eli is here after this season
I think it's almost 100% certain he'll be here in 2020. If DG didn't love Darnold he's gonna fall in love with Haskins??? No fucking way, not with all the ER's available at 6. And if we don't draft a QB this year it all but GUARANTEES Eli will be here in 2020.
And what's furthermore is that we probably won't be bad enough in 2019 to draft on the top 2020 QB's.....so there's probably a better than 50% chance that Eli is here for THREE MORE YEARS.
I am not a believer in attributing Wins/Losses to quarterbacks, goalies or pitchers, but for those of you that do think this makes sense, Eli is 19 games under .500 in the last 6 years.
He has a completion pct of 62% and is averaging 25 TDs, 16 interceptions and 8 fumbles per year during this 6 year span.
Its time to stop paying him for what he did a long time ago.
Unfortunately the people running the Giants are the only ones who don’t know that.
Oh pipe down. Perhaps they think Eli is a pro and we can do a lot worse but they do want to find a younger qb sooner than later. Wow, amazing, can’t be... middle ground! What a concept.

Shut The hell up already!
He’s right, and any objective person can see it. You can’t, because you’re delusional.
Young qb like rosen puts up dismal numbers in Arizona last year. Granted he played behind the bad OL and new coaching staff and bad defense. Had some talent to work with in Johnson and fitz but the OL was bad, no doubt. That’s ok though, he’s a young qb but make no mistake his numbers were bad.
Eli puts up decent, not bad, not dismal but decent numbers playing behind an equally terrible OL, new staff same bad defense. Ok he had Barkley and 12 games of Beckham. But his numbers were better than rosen. A lot better. But Eli is this pariah around here. He just HAS to go? Why? Why not just let his contract expire organically and go from there?
I won’t even mind if they cut Eli today but the group or mob mentality with this Eli and money thing is downright fucking weird. I’ll never understand it. Never.

And has been downright embarrassing each of the last two seasons. They have gotten rid of multiple key veterans in the last few months and the roster is full of holes. There is no reasonable expectation of competing this year, next year is possible if Gettleman drafts out of his mind but that’s unlikely.
What is the point of keeping 38 year old Eli Manning let alone extending him? He has no future, you’re not building towards anything, it’s just pointless. The Manning era was nice and now it’s over, this is like staying together for the kids only the kids moved out five years ago and haven’t been in touch since.
It’s over. I would honestly rather watch Lauletta all season at least there would be some intrigue around starting 1-7 in that case.

One has upside. One doesn’t. This isn’t hard.
Couple of things to add:
1) the group/mob mentality is at least as strong in the "pro Eli, he can play till he's 60, nothing is ever his fault" group
2) the money thing, as you put it, is in fact important...in a salary cap sport (unlike say baseball) you can't afford to pay top $$ to a QB for bottom tier performance

What’s the point in keeping a solid vet qb? What if the giants did play well in 2019-2020 and have a shitty young qb that holds the team back?
I guess the chargers and saints should have cut their vet QBs a few years ago. After all, they were losing too.
If you cut Eli today and sign some vet qb, you’re essentially paying the same money this season at the position! Hello! Let’s ignore that part though!!!
The giants aren’t going with ONLY the young qb and no vet presence behind him. Make peace with this and fucking move on.
Eli is not as good as Phil Rivers, Drew Brees or Tom Brady. That should be obvious to you. Maybe at some point in his career he was better than Rivers, you’d find very few people outside of the NY metro who think he ever got anywhere near Brees or Brady. And he’s aged worse than all of them. It’s fine, players age differently. Brady is a freak and an all-time great.

Can you show one poster who wants Eli long term?
Its not necessarily people outright saying they want him to sign long term, its people unwilling to warm up to any QB prospect year after year. Its a never ending kick the can down the road.

Fitzpatrick made $3 million last year. Tyrod just signed a two year deal with San Diego, I doubt for $10 million a year.
Your math doesn't add up.
After what has just occurred, it would be wasteful to not just Â

But if we draft a QB in 2020 we'll need Eli to play at least two more year, so the extneiosn will have to be more than just a way to lower his cap it.

Agree.
The Big Ben will also be stupid.
The River's one not so much because they are a good team.

And that makes this, if true, so dumb it completely offsets the great work done to trade OBJ.
This organization is hopeless.

Question, have you had that same thought the past two seasons?

No, he can't. It would have to be you or I and neither have advocated that.
He's just painting that picture in order to justify poor behavior/venting.

Overblown. Better blocking = better results. We all know the Giants need to add the QB of the future but your post is false.
