Makes sense in that she seems to have an emotional attachment to Odell that is unprofessional. Same with Saquon.
or maybe she just loves her job? maybe she just sees that the players are fucking people with emotions. sorry eric but that comment seemed a little low lol
I stand by my comments. I like her a lot. But her reporting on Odell was way off the mark, almost as if she was pleading the Giants not to trade him.
That's not her job. Just like it's not Rob Leonard's job to constantly ride Beckham's ass. Or Steve Politi to one moment write how Beckham is an asshole and then months later say the Giants are idiots for trading him.

sure. but her sharing a story about how OBJ reached out is wrong? They are around players all day long. it isnt wrong for them to have some sort of connection. she shared her story about a time with OBJ and how she felt he was a good guy. i dont see anything wrong. she wasnt crying because he was gone, she got emotional because someone unrelated to her and with no attachment showed he gave a shit. its completely the opposite of the picture most of the media paints

Amen brother. They are either good guys or heels when it comes to players and teams. It's WWE reporting and cheer-leading and it's sickening. More sickening is people acting like their spouses just got diagnosed with leukemia. We traded a WR, OH NOES! Go cry in your footy pj's, make a warm cup of cocoa and get to bed while the grownups discuss football.

I'm sure that she's a nice lady and all, but I have no idea why people think she's some great reporter. Her questions are always about how players and coaches are feeling after a win or a loss.

It may be British, I'm not a native speaker. Anyway, you're not the worst offender, but some sounded a little too eager to put her down for this.
On the flip side, Glazer should have simply taken his victory lap by remaining silent. Instead, he's been tweeting like a child about this for 24 hours. Comes across as having a thin skin.
Methinks you are right, however, in that Kim took a hit on this as she mocked the trade rumors just hours before the trade.
need to rethink about how to view journalists in the world today. Sports is a 24/7 industry and it sells papers. When there's no news, you write opinion pieces or opine about different topics related to the team. That's not not reporting, that's the industry. They do both.
I just think it's insane at how upset people get over the Giants journalists on this site. The amount of hatred and vitriol spewed toward some of the beat guys is insane. They're writing about a team who's not actually making news every day. No one would read them if all they ever did was report facts.

It's a two-way street. If Politi and Leonard are going to write snot-nosed, venomous articles about the players they are covering, they are fair game too.
You don't see people around here dumping on Mike Garafolo (an Eagles fan) because he was a pro. There used to be a NYT writer who covered the Giants who was awesome too (I forget his name - I think he was a baseball guy too). You don't see many people attack Tom Rock, Art Stapleton, Paul Schwartz (other than for being a mouthpiece for the org at times).

I believe you are out of line. You can be entitled to your opinion, but I do not believe her personal beliefs ever got in the way of her reporting. She said unless they got blown away she did not believe he would be moved. Do the rest of us feel the same way, I sure as hell think so. We did not get enough for him. She shared a personal story, just as many other reporters have about their personal experiences. She has been honest about her beliefs from the start. I believe you questioning her ethical stance on how she reported this story is frankly, disgraceful.
but it means absolutely nothing as it relates to the Giants. Nobody came on here and said that OBJ was the worst person in the world or that he did not have any redeeming qualities about him. The allegation was that he was immature and was not worth the headache that he caused. This gesture he did to Kim Jones was certainly nice, but it proves nothing in this argument and it does not make anyone right about what kind of teammate or distraction he was. I am sure most, if not all, players who are moved due to character concerns have made nice gestures in their life. Please, this is so stupid.

No doubt. Some are better than others and some tend more toward negative than positive. But honestly, the Giants the last 5 years or so have been a pretty bad time to be a fan. So maybe some of the articles are negative and not malicious. I think that's a pretty important distinction that fandom has a hard time differentiating.
I'm guilty of it too at times, so I'm not saying I'm above it. I'm saying that if you step back and look at what sports journalism is, or sports media might be better, and how it's trended over the last 20 years, we're not getting facts from article. That's not what people are interested in, they're interested in takes. I don't think they're villains. Half the time I think they're just trying to find different ways to look at commonly talked about issues.

There’s more to this whole thing than just football. That may not matter to you and that’s fine, but her feelings aren’t stupid. Her life is covering sports, this was obviously important to her.
Kim is awesome, beats listening to just about every other person in the business. She does a much better job than most when reporting.
In what universe should the criticism he received for a litany of things he did that showed a lack of maturity/awareness and caused distractions for the team, make him misunderstood.
I like Kim but her emotional attachment to Beckham Should have no bearing on how one feels about this trade.
The "reporting" by Leonard and Politi has been simply mean-spirited and toxic. Most fans avoid them like the plague. Market speaks. Why do you think everyone was so bummed when Garafolo left?
We'll agree to disagree. I think it is clear cut that her personal opinions influenced her reporting.
How? She said that she did not believe the Giants would trade without getting a big haul. What in that statement is unprofessional. She said a 3rd and 5th would never get it done for Odell. Was she wrong? Even Garfolo last night said he did not believe the rumors were true at this point. Was he unprofessional too? He is the one who broke the freaking story. Kim was giving her honest opinion, so because she was being honest and genuine she was unprofessional, you are way off base.

I didn't say her feelings were stupid, I meant anyone on this board trying to use this as a point that the Giants were wrong about character issues is stupid. The Giants may well have been wrong (and I am against the trade) but this story doesn't prove anything.
I don't read either of them, so I don't have an opinion to offer on their work. But every time a negative article is posted on the site, there's plenty of people that will fill up that thread with criticism or just plain name calling of the journalist instead of the content of the piece.
It's easy to be bummed about Garafolo because he was the best in the business, as his success has shown.
We'll agree to disagree. I think it is clear cut that her personal opinions influenced her reporting.
Agreed.
For a year, she has dismissed any of the smoke that was surrounding Odell being in trade discussions saying none of it was true whenever she was asked.
Last night, she went even further on NFL Network. The video is online, but she accused any writer or media person who suggested Beckham was involved in trade chatter was trolling for clicks and begging for attention.
FIVE MINUTES LATER, they go the breaking news with Garafolo who reports the trade has just gone down.
Now you see the stories that have come out saying the Giants wanted to do this at the trade deadline. Glazer has been pumping this story for months. All of these different things are coming out now. And yet, it was Kim calling all of this nonsense (for lack of a better word) and going on the attack against anyone who said otherwise.
Clearly, any reporting she had on this for the last year was flagrantly wrong now. Kim is a very good reporter. But simply offering a "my bad" and the way she had gone out her way to (I guess) protect Odell (what other conclusion can be drawn now?) just seems very odd and not professional.
he is a true sports reporter, I always enjoyed reading his articles
I don't know who he was referring to but when I read it I thought Bill Pennington who is an excellent reporter for the Times and was on the beat for about 5-10 years
"Last Night of the Yankee Dynasty," about the the 2001 World Series, is one of my absolute favorite books. ESPN always ruins guys like him, but he's had a great career.
I stand by my comments. I like her a lot. But her reporting on Odell was way off the mark, almost as if she was pleading the Giants not to trade him.

Did you see her report right before the trade... it's almost as if she took the trade rumors as an insult.
I did because she said that the Giants were taking calls but that there demands were too high. She said that people would start rumors for clicks. I actually believe some of that was true. I do believe she truly believed most of the rumors were garbage, so did Garafolo who said he did not believe Odell would be moved and that was right before her comments. Was he being unprofessional too? They were wrong. Dorsey never gave up. DG should never have made this trade for the return he got. I hope I am wrong but my heart and mind tell me I am not.
All they want, but he is a very good/caring person. Met him numerous times from college to the Pros. ALWAYS takes time with people. Pics, autographs and he'll sit there and talk just like any other person. It may not seem like much, but it's stuff that a lot of famous people don't do.
Make decisions with your head, not your heart. I was guilty of overlooking OBJs diva attitude, but I’m over it time to move on. Just ordered Barkley jerseys for my son and I😀

Yeah, but OBJ didn't die, he just got traded. Therefore, there is no reason for her to be emotional about it in that sense. Reporters are there to report news, not make it and if they can't do that, then it shows their bias.
as a reporter? Do you think if she had the story she wouldn't have broken it? Was she hiding a story somehow? She didn't get the story and didn't think it was going to happen (she said "unless an offer blew them away - apparently this offer did blow them away, that's up for discussion) so she was wrong about that.
Sharing a nice story about someone she spent WAY more time with than any of us was nice and obviously she was touched by it (hell, she almost lost her life so I can understand the emotion). My 2 cents

If you watch the clip, it comes across as if she thinks Odell is some sort of victim. Odell got paid $95 million last year. He played in 12 games. He just got traded to a team that he wanted to play for. He's no victim.
Sports reporters aren't and shouldn't be held to the same fucking standard as Tom Brokaw or Edward R Murrow.
They are journalists aren't they? We give journalists a level of trust or hold them to a standard we wouldn't for "average BBI poster." They are used for sources of information, we trust that what they are giving us is based on facts. I expect that of all journalists, but I guess I'm old school.

Nobody was complaining about Kim Jones' professionalism and ability to be impartial when she covered the Penn State scandal (her alma matter), or when she was giving glowing, positively immaculate impressions of Saquon Barkley (a historically great player from her alma matter). Why now is it a problem?
Because it runs contrary to the Giants narrative their media shills are spreading.
Salzberg was on Kay saying “nobody told me this but I have a feeling they think Odell could have played those last four weeks and wasn’t as hurt as he led on”. Others have said it too.

100% true, but some are not reporters. Rather some of them are columnists. Kim, though, is a true sports journalist who I respect and like more than any other. So, the apparent emotional attachment and allowing it to cloud her reporting is out of character.
does make it easy to forget what "news" is and what "reporting" has classically looked like.
I don't disagree that it is painfully difficult to find news that is being responsibly reported by people who take the time to fact check. That said, with the erosion of any semblance of job security and the potential to make a career without credentials, I accept the mess and do my best to sift through it.
Kim Jones is an excellent reporter and I don't hold against her the need for "additional sifting required".

Her daily reporting on the scandal at Penn State was by far the best. She was giving a daily interview with Francessa and it was outstanding. Nobody had more information, was more thorough, more objective, or more professional.
As for Barkley, is it unprofessional to glow about him? Alma Mater or not, he was, by far, the best player in the draft and maybe several drafts.
She is absolutely spot on! I am sick to my stomach.
he can. i think her point was he is a good guy and actually cared
Agree.. People here will look for anything to support their beliefs..

That's not her job. Just like it's not Rob Leonard's job to constantly ride Beckham's ass. Or Steve Politi to one moment write how Beckham is an asshole and then months later say the Giants are idiots for trading him.
Reporters have stopped reporting.

Makes sense in that she seems to have an emotional attachment to Odell that is unprofessional. Same with Saquon.
Agree.. People here will look for anything to support their beliefs..
Or maybe people are more complex than being purely good or purely jerks. Maybe he is a good guy who sometimes acts like a diva?
No. Easier to just cling to your preconceived beliefs.
Haha, might be my favorite comment of yours ever. Where the hell did you pull that one from? Jesus.

need to rethink about how to view journalists in the world today. Sports is a 24/7 industry and it sells papers. When there's no news, you write opinion pieces or opine about different topics related to the team. That's not not reporting, that's the industry. They do both.

Anyways, appreciate the site Eric.

There’s more to this whole thing than just football. That may not matter to you and that’s fine, but her feelings aren’t stupid. Her life is covering sports, this was obviously important to her.
Kim is awesome, beats listening to just about every other person in the business. She does a much better job than most when reporting.
I like Kim but her emotional attachment to Beckham Should have no bearing on how one feels about this trade.
We've been allowed to make the sports section our homepage - but it's still just entertainment.

but it means absolutely nothing as it relates to the Giants.

I didn't say her feelings were stupid, I meant anyone on this board trying to use this as a point that the Giants were wrong about character issues is stupid. The Giants may well have been wrong (and I am against the trade) but this story doesn't prove anything.
It's easy to be bummed about Garafolo because he was the best in the business, as his success has shown.
I don't know who he was referring to but when I read it I thought Bill Pennington who is an excellent reporter for the Times and was on the beat for about 5-10 years

Blurring of lines
I did because she said that the Giants were taking calls but that there demands were too high. She said that people would start rumors for clicks. I actually believe some of that was true. I do believe she truly believed most of the rumors were garbage, so did Garafolo who said he did not believe Odell would be moved and that was right before her comments. Was he being unprofessional too? They were wrong. Dorsey never gave up. DG should never have made this trade for the return he got. I hope I am wrong but my heart and mind tell me I am not.
Thank you

I stand by my comments. I like her a lot. But her reporting on Odell was way off the mark, almost as if she was pleading the Giants not to trade him.

sure. but her sharing a story about how OBJ reached out is wrong? They are around players all day long. it isnt wrong for them to have some sort of connection. she shared her story about a time with OBJ and how she felt he was a good guy. i dont see anything wrong. she wasnt crying because he was gone, she got emotional because someone unrelated to her and with no attachment showed he gave a shit. its completely the opposite of the picture most of the media paints
Yeah, but OBJ didn't die, he just got traded. Therefore, there is no reason for her to be emotional about it in that sense. Reporters are there to report news, not make it and if they can't do that, then it shows their bias.

He's no victim.

right... and it is not just sports either
No. But they shouldn't sound like hacks either.

Pat Leonard is a hack. Kim Jones is guilty of having human empathy, big deal.

I'm a fan of Kim Jones.
But she let her Penn State connections transparently affect her reporting. Agree 100 percent and mentioned Saquon above as an example.
This isn't a huge deal. It just rubs me the wrong way that Odell is made out to be some sort of victim here. Odell got what he wanted. He won.
Salzberg was on Kay saying “nobody told me this but I have a feeling they think Odell could have played those last four weeks and wasn’t as hurt as he led on”. Others have said it too.

As for Barkley, is it unprofessional to glow about him? Alma Mater or not, he was, by far, the best player in the draft and maybe several drafts.
