Pat Leonard.....Daily News

froggerjoe : 3/13/2019 5:34 pm
I am not a particular fan of his.....so take it for what it’s worth:

Let's see if the #Giants have trouble signing players in free agency after proving that they are willing to get rid of many of their best players. Just talked to one ex-player who said that after seeing OBJ trade: "If I were a free agent, I wouldn't go there."

What is your thoughts on this....do you think players would take this into consideration when choosing a new team?

The rank and file free agents are just looking for the best offer and the best situation.

The Giants being a flaming dumpster fire has more role in players coming her.

come play for the Giants, it's a great organization. If for whatever reason you clash with our GM who has been known to clash with players we'll just diminish your reputation and ship you off. Don't worry, we are also very comfortable fighting through the media about you while still on this team. Also, we've been on a bad trajectory for years now.

Where do I sign??

I mean look at todsy for example. Jtgiants said shit was about to go down today. Maybe DG was working on those deals yesterday, then he traded Beckham and guys were like “fuck that”. I think that’s a big part why nothing’s been announced yet, over 90 minutes after when we were told stuff was getting done.

To suggest that all players just go for the highest contract
NoGainDayne : 3/13/2019 5:42 pm : link
is actually ridiculous. There are also players that sign team friendly deals prior to FA if they like the direction of the franchise.

Boiling every player down to a mercenary is just as insane as the idea that the players that hit free agency aren't likely to take the best offer they get.

There is room in the middle.

Why would this trade cause FA's to not want to come here?
montanagiant : 3/13/2019 5:43 pm : link
OBJ got a great contract from the Giants, as well as Vernon. Why would they be traded equate to FA's not coming here?

Really somewhat of a dumb take by Leonard

Free agents would not come here because Coughlin was too tough. Wasn’t just media - lots of posters here said the same.

I don’t think there’s another columnist who is more full of shit and more ignorant than Leonard. There are and have been bad columnists covering the team but he’s at the top
Most free agents are motivated by the money first

and if that is equal, where can they have success and win games. Assuming the Giants are offering similar money as other teams, that second one right now is not helping. I would doubt many players are thinking that signing with the Giants is going to put them in the playoffs anytime soon.
I'd say that if the money is the same, players will judge other things

New York is still the place to get endorsements. But I don't see how the perception that the team is run poorly helps.

Plus Bucannon turned us down and it wasn't over $$$.

It's 100% happening right now....the only way we're getting FA;s to come here is to massively overpay them.

Right or wrong Gettleman is a laughing stock among the league....not sure how anyone can deny that.

Eh. Most young free agents were what 18 last time the Giants won? They’ve been around for the two Super Bowls and a lot of bad football. The iconic franchise stuff doesn’t have much pull.

There will be free agents second guessing coming to a team Gettleman runs if they have similar options elsewhere. Between Deangelo Williams and Norman trashing him on social media and the current Giants who might be upset about what’s going on, players talk.

Mike, pro players don't care about that anywhere NEAR as much as they care about $$$. This isn't high school. It's a job and they have families to feed and a short window to earn as much as they can. If anything the high cost of living in this area is the turnoff.

The posters here worried that players will not want to come here may want to rethink some of the posts they write on this Board where the verbally treat some players as Garbage. Listen most agree we need to get our QB of the future but if you were a player and see what People write about Eli on this Board.. maybe they would not want to come here. This is a guy who won 2 super bowls for us and yet people would like to dump him in the Hudson River if they could.

Yeah probably not because he's always on the top of the most over-rated player in the league lists by the players.
Pat Leonard is an incompetent troll
ciggy : 3/13/2019 6:18 pm : link
Some of the idiots that post on this site are more knowledgeable than him.

99% of all free agent deals are determined by dollars, which includes off field opportunities, cost of living, taxes. Etc.

And Giants are not in position this year to go after any big time free agents.
Pat’s a pencil neck beta male twerp
mfsd : 3/13/2019 6:25 pm : link
But there may be some truth to this now, amongst players who love to star-fuck celebrities like OBJ. But to be honest, those aren’t the guys we want to be rebuilding with right now anyway. Let them jerk each other off on OBJ’s social media and beg to trade jerseys with him.

The one thing DG has done well is last year’s draft - QB vs RB debate aside, we drafted an All-Pro caliber guy, 2 solid starters, an LB with starter potential, and another guy with upside in RJ (Lauletta = eh at this point)

DG needs to deliver the same draft results for 2 more years in a row and we need to find our next QB...after that, veteran free agents who want to win will have no problem signing here, and that’s when we should be playing in the big FA pool...to fill the final gaps for a contender.

He had no reported interest by any other team. No scheduled visits. It likely is that he isn't fully recovered and couldn't pass a physical at this time. Signing with the Panthers, they are familiar with his rehab and likely have no problem with the injury as they know he will be good to go by August.
they got rid of players who don't
fkap : 3/13/2019 6:35 pm : link
fit their mold. They'll bring in players that do fit their mold. Players not smart enough to see that aren't welcome, anyway.

It may be a factor this year, but it'll be forgotten by next year. I doubt it will prevent them from being able to sign players.

But, if the Giants want the stigma to go away and not grow, they need to be competent in achieving a rebuild.
I wouldn't blame FA with choices not wanting to come here right now...
Dan in the Springs : 3/13/2019 6:37 pm : link
but IMO that has more to do with the fact that we've been losing lately.

That can change, and I think it will sooner than the loudest voices on BBI opine.

There are 30 other teams besides the Giants and Panthers. I think the more likely scenario is no team offered him what he wanted and he realized his best chance to get that contract is to stay in a system he is familiar with. But with that being said, the Giants are an unappealing franchise right now. It has to be about the money or the bright lights of the big city. Other than that, it’s loosersville.
