The easy answer is he's both - but in 2015, Bettcher's first as a d-coordinator, Bucannon was a clear LB with Matthieu and Jefferson being the safeties.
Will be curious to see how this impacts roster management and future decisions.
While Collins clearly did not want to play LB and resisted that idea (based on certain reports), Peppers, from his days in Michigan, clearly relished the idea of being a joker/money player and even won the Butkus.
Will be interesting to see.
For those who like the measurements and such:
Bucannon and Peppers compare very similarly.
Bucannon:
211 lbs
4.49 forty with 1.54 10yd split
36.5 vert
19 reps
10'5" broad
Peppers:
213 lbs
4.46 forty with 1.54 10yd split
35.5 vert
19 reps
10'8" broad
Biggest difference was Bucannon has length on Peppers.
Bucannon: 6010 with 32 3/8 arms
Peppers: 5103 with 30 3/4 arms

we had any other safeties, this might be a valid question, but as crappy as our LBs are, take a look at the safety depth chart.
Certainly true our safety position is decimated yet that doesn't mean we won't add in FA or the draft instead of going LB.
My point was that don't count out management considering him a LB and viewing building on the S position more.
Of course agree if had to field a team today he'd have to play S. But that could change by time of camp or even next year. Just something to watch as Bettcher had a ton of success with this mold of player at LB.
Agreed. Draft a young FS in the later rounds too. We need speedy LB's man... Ogletree had a good yr, but has his limitations... I do like the kid from Georgia, but the rest of the guys should be selling cars.

We had a shitty safety depty chart last year to. We had Collins and who else?
The suck of Curtis Riley overshadowed Thomas. While he won't be confused with Collins or Peppers, he still did well enough in Collins' annual trip to IR.
and bethea, peppers, thomas, and a rookie is not a horrible S group
He can lineup as a too high and during cadence come down into the Box.
If the quarterback audibles to 4 verticals he can play a slot or a tight end man up.
Peppers can be used in multiple ways and still be called a safety.
Look, Bettcher runs a 2-5ish scheme, very similar to what we did vs the Bills in SB 25. You know its two down lineman but what the other 5 are doing...is wide open and that's what made his defenses so hard to figure in AZ. We simply didn't have the players to do it last year and we still don't, but the Peppers acquisition should show you where he's going with this.
Because that’s our needs...
Obviously someone upset with the trade. All OBJ circus catches dont make up for giving up a 3rd and 17. Already a better team today than they were last year with 12 draft choices ( including basically 3 first rounders) to sort through. Get excited dude.
2 serviceable safeties, when was the last time we had that? Barkley will score points. Need to stop teams in the fourth quarter. Draft the LB from LSU and the best edge rusher in the first round and we are great for the next 5 years

Interesting comment. Are you saying WR is not a need? Anyway, lighten up. Comment was said with good humor.
And yeah, all those needs Googs listed are real. You shouldn't be so quick to assume all of our draft picks will solve them. As I've said elsewhere, if we don't hit a bunch strikes then the next few seasons will be really long.
That's how Bettcher used Buchanan in AZ
It's a lot on one side but this is the year. It's lining up.

More excited about 3 1st round picks than signing a Landon Collins for $15 million a year. Counting on the front office to draft well and have a quality defense for years to come without a huge cap hit. Get me the LB from LSU and a top edge rusher and maybe a wr with the first 3 picks and we are much better than last year.

Maybe he can play WR too!

Yeah that's what I miss most...the circus catches.
We will be a better only when we start showing we are a better team on the field. And i didn't realize we picked up 3 extra first rounders today...so don't extrapolate the truth.
I admire the optimist but really only respect the realist.
Figure out which one you want to be...

Agreed on Landon, I didn't want to keep him at that price either. And I was quite happy with the trade for Zeitler. But don't tell me we're better without OBJ. That's silly talk... unless you're one of those who just hate the guy. In which case it's still silly.
Here's to hoping we nail our picks. We've put almost all of our eggs in that basket. But with the way things have gone though, I'm not counting out a trade up for Haskins... I pray otherwise

Actually a fan of OBJ. But we are not going to win with him and no D. This is our chance to build a Defense for the next 5 years. At minimal cost.
