Drafting a TE and converting Evan Engram to WR

Mr. Nickels : 3/14/2019 12:26 am
How about we consider moving Engram to WR? I still would draft a WR or 2 but maybe we prioritize the TE position and have Engram switch to WR?
Draft a two-way TE? Probably.

Convert Engram to full-time WR? Probably not.

Line Engram out wide more often? Probably.
To do this correctly you would have to draft

One of the Iowa TE's and both are going in the 1st round
This has been floated around here quite often

But it does not really make sense. What makes Engram dangerous as a receiving tight end, is that he is a mismatch against most line backers and safeties. The advantage he has in speed and change of direction would be all but lost against your typical outside corner.

He is also not the type of physical high-point type of receiver to win against outside corners with size or strength.

Basically using him outside would pretty much negate most of what he is actually good at and how he actually wins against defenders.
I am not sure Engram would be a great WR

Hands musts improves. He is very fast but not explosive. He would have issues seperating from corners....now, i am sure he can win 50/50 but his game is in the middle of the field like Shepard.

Getting a Gronk-like TE would be great.....but expect NE to overpay and dont we have Rhet Ellison and Scott Simonion for that role? Drafting a TE early is a luxary.

We need defense and outside WR
Yes

T.J. Hockenson and move Engram to the outside.
Honestly I think we overrate Engram as a receiver as it is

Putting him against defenders that specialize in defending the pass will not help. I don't think he's that good a route runner anyway. He needs to stay where he is.

How about we get a better TE and go with more 2 TE sets. Switch to a TE passing game. When we are not running the ball that is.
His speed as a TE is great. Not as a WR.

He was caught a few times last year from behind. Think back, VC was not a burner, but once he got a step or two he was gone. Engram is not Vernon Davis. He will be a great target over the middle and in a seam routes against LBs and safeties.
Keep him where he is a mismatch, inside.
Our other TEs improved their blocking

Last season. But a legit blocking catching TE is always a consideration, say, 5th round or so.

Need not be very fast, just a great run blocker and gets it as a receiver, cuts and go get ball.
Run blocking is obviously a point of emphasis

Simonson I guess. But you could add one mid rounds.
Not really interested in a

blocking TE. Either get a real TE or just put a tackle out there to block.
Get

Hakeem Butler instead.
I would add a dynamic TE
Dankbeerman : 3/14/2019 6:25 am : link
to the group but not move EE. having multiple TE and slot types and mixing and matching personel and positioning is the route i would go.

Give me Alize Mack and Hunter Renfrow in mid rounds
Or

You draft a natural WR that will probably be a better WR than Engram
Yes a natural WR
section125 : 3/14/2019 6:41 am : link
is the way to go than converting EE

For the ant-Haskins crowd - maybe one of those 5 WRs from OSU that made Haskins look so good.......

My thoughts exactly. Go the New England route of two TE sets where they become the focus of the passing game. Problem with that is there’s nobody out there to stretch the field and the Defense.
