Our fears have been realized

Jim in Forest Hills : 3/14/2019 8:40 am
Even with DG's late wheelings and dealings, it looks like we won't escape what many of us feared would come true.

Barkley, spectacular but caught as a mighty warship in a storm of ineptitude, his prime years wasted as the team searches for a QB and hangs onto Eli for too long.

Eli, valiantly as always willing to fight (even as he fades), but the talent around him means he will continue to lose.

Heading into a draft weak in QBs, a pressing need looms over the franchise. Moving up to draft less gifted QBs? Or wait til next year?

DG said we can rebuild and win at the same time. When does the winning happen?

Maybe wait to see how the rest of FA and the draft turns out..?

Then why pay $17M? use it to get Defensive players.. Center.. another WR.. this will help the QB next year and more.. keeping Eli makes no sense.. When it came to OBJ business decisions were made when it comes to Eli for the past 3 years all decisions were made based on loyalty..

This is true. But we had a defense last year - after the offense went lord knows how many quarters in a row being shut out and not scoring over 30 points for how many games they got disheartened and fell apart. And of course every single Giant fan from my grandmother to my baby nephew knew for the past 5 years our o-line was horrible and they failed to properly address it.

So you say you think DG knows this but bravo I think every football fan in Uzbekistan knows it too. It's a matter of whether he can fix it. And that remains to be seen.
“Eli valiantly willing to fight”?
mattyblue : 3/14/2019 8:53 am : link
Or Eli willing to get paid? I don’t blame him for getting paid whatsoever but this portrayal of him as some poor superstar surrounded by crap isn’t the reality.

He needs more than just the basics any QB needs. Take a look at how his numbers drop off the last several years without OBJ. He needs more weapons now too.

And most QBs in the league can win with a strong Oline, receiving weapons and a good defense. It's time to try and find someone who can make the players around him better. Eli simply isn't doing that anymore.

as it uses the person's confidence against him. At this level, people believe they can find a way out of it "while winning." The KC model was referenced. However the KC model had an excellent team that was already winning. Giants have none of that and the Giants are now struggling in the web.
I disagree with your analysis regarding QB’s
Giant John : 3/14/2019 8:56 am : link
Other than the kid from Clemson I think next years class is about equal. I like to idea that we draft a QB at 6 and let him learn from Eli for a while. That will produce the best outcome possible. I know this is a strong group of defensive players and I see us going that direction with 17.
No, don’t expect a lot of wins but honestly I didn’t before we traded OBJ either.
I think we will begin to turn things around second half of next season. I hope I’m correct. I don’t like Eli’s ontract for this season. I’d like to see him offer to cut it a bit. He’s not worth that kind of money at this point. C’mon Eli man up.

It's probably more apt to say we wasted/would be wasting OBJ, hence the trade. By the time we competitive again, he'll be 30.

Barkley, on the other hand, about what......25? LOL

Why shouldn’t we? We are in a freefall from any angle you look. Record, roster, qb situation, fan frenzy. Let’s wait more years. It’s only been 7 for a playoff win, let’s go to 10!
With all due respect Jim

You don’t know what you are talking about. You are speaking from the heart and not from your head. You are not listening to DG’s words, even when he is trying to help you understand his plan.

It is the KC Plan! Have Eli mentor a newbie for one year, let the newbie hold a clipboard, watch film, and then unleash the newbie in year two. And just like Alex Smith in his last year in KC, so is Eli....still formidable and sufficient.

Open your eyes brother Jim.....it’s not that hard to see and understand.

We also haven't seen franchise level QB play for the past 3 years.. but lets only focus on OL.. Defense was pretty good just 2 years ago.. actually it was close to being the best then to being average.. and I remember that year.. it was either 4 yard completion on 3rd and 6.. or force OBJ to convert all short to medium slants into 50 yard TD.. Also part of the OL blame has to go to Eli as he is literally a statue back there and he goes down with any sight of pressure.. There is not even the lateral movement to get away from pressure like Brady...

actually...
peteschweaty : 3/14/2019 9:27 am : link
losing obj will speed up the rebuild and that's what we're in the middle of. time to say goodbye to eli though.
Yes the defense was good 2 years ago and they won
JCin332 : 3/14/2019 9:34 am : link
which was my point...

The quick slants to OBJ were a necessity because the OL was so bad...

And maybe you didn't watch Brady in the playoffs this year he was barely touched...

What that means exactly, I don't know. But if this offense can play like the end of last season, we could be surprised this season, even though we are clearly in a state of flux on defense.

Yes I did.. this year he had a great OL/running game which didn't showcase his pocket movement.. but 2 years ago his pocket movement was still better than Eli..

I hope it wasn't a mirage.. but lets look at Redskins and Cowboys games.. Redskins had the single worst QB starting for them.. their defense looked good first couple of drive.. our O looked bad.. Then our defense scores a TD.. our RB pulls a 78 TD run.. and the game is blown wide open as the redskins were completely demotivated.. After that we looked good against dallas for a game where they benched their best player.. even if the players that played tried and played hard.. their coaches didn't game plan for us.. they were busy planning for a playoff game (I doubt team coaches waste time for meaningless games).. we scored really well against a team that didn't game plan or called a reg season level game.. obviously that leaves 2 games.. one in which we sucked really bad.. and another where we were good but any good offense scores in the end after a good kick return..
I am simply not as encouraged as the rest of you guys in terms of our offensive issued being resolved because we scored big against Redskins and Dallas the last 2 games.. with all our investment in offense they have to be better..

I think this is the problem when we don't have our solution at QB and so many holes on the team why exactly do we want to be "winning some games" does anyone really see this as a team that can do anything but if everything goes completely right squeak into the playoffs? Much more likely we are middleing and it affects our ability to get the QB we need.

I don't understand why so many people seem willing to sign up for the idea of winning increasing what is extremely likely to be a less than thrilling win total like this year only to lower our chances at getting someone that will turn around our franchise. This is the truely baffling part of this board right now.

You state that with such certainty, as if it s a fact. Why?

We have a qb who is old
greek13 : 3/14/2019 12:04 pm : link
How old was Favre when he got the boot? Montana? Even Elway retired when? Unitas? Namath? Stabler? We do not have a qb that can move at all - extend a play - throw a short touch pass - run for yardage - he’s disrespected by players - fans - voted most overrated - it’s a conspiracy right?

We should draft fuzzy thurston
Trade for Jim Taylor
Call Steve young
They won Super Bowls too
Everyone whoever won a super bowl should play forever, make millions,
Ride the ship to the bottom - exactly where we are - he got screwed here by JR - worst gm in modern football history -
Eli was a hero for many - that’s fantastic
No reason to keep it going - do it now!!!!
If we don’t draft a web what do we do in 20? Start a rookie ? That will take another year - wth are you people talking about ????
The coach 2 years ago was done with Eli - owner too - but now he’s Rasputin? Mara Tisch and now DG —— sad sad

Sorry

At this point, it just doesn't matter, what will be will be. Being a big fan of the Giants, and of Eli, I root for them to do well always. To be competitive always. And honestly, based on the absolute shyte this team has been trotting out in front of him since 2012, and the absolute vitriol people spew on him here, I really do hope that he shoves it up everyone's ass next year and then retires.
