After a camp practice session in 2007...

since1925 : 3/14/2019 10:05 am
I was walking back the Best Western Hotel with a very knowledge Giants media member discussing the upcoming season. And he looked at me and said, "Listen, the players know that the team isn't that good this year. They're going nowhere." I withheld the name but you all know it.

Just sayin'.

would actually be the only fitting ending to a career like Eli's lol...

Watch... :)
Anytime you have a Barkley and a saavy vet,

you can compete, assuming your OL does their job. Eli’s been getting killed up the middle. If that changes and there’s every reason to believe it will, we will be competitive, ideally with Eli’s replacement in tow.

We have to kill it for the D in the draft. From what I’m reading and with the plethora of draft picks we have, that is a very decent possibility

noise and keep building an actual football team. That should be the goal for 2019

I thought this was an odd post since the Giants made the playoffs in 05 and 06 and don't recall the negativity. I pulled up Football Outsiders, which had three of the 17 staff members expecting the Giants to pick last.

superstar players, they win with a never ending supply of role players. Maybe Gettleman is of that mindset.

More than half of BBI wanted Coughlin fired after 2006.
Correct...

The difference betweeb winning and losing are usually small.

Win the game, next
Make playoff
Win playoff, next

A proven RT and a bunch of toys for Bettcher.
And 2009....

Get ready...
2007 and 2011...
x meadowlander : 3/14/2019 10:31 am : link
...irony is NEITHER of those teams deserved to be in the playoffs, the end of both seasons absolutely PUTRID. I gave up on the 07' team after Eli's 4 INT game vs Minnesota at home, gave up on 2011 after they lost a MUST WIN against Washington that ruined their playoff chances.

One common thread being a Giant fan this century is the emotional roller coaster. Highest highs, lowest, absolutely crushing lows.

Really, the ONLY team that was solid and hauled ass was the 2008 squad. Beat the Panthers to become the best team in the NFC before Plax shot the team in the ass.
I think you would see better play from many
mdc1 : 3/14/2019 10:31 am : link
times if their compensation was conditional on achievement of goals like TD, wins, 3rd down stops. stuff like that. Since they are union it is likely that some will just get by if the mentality to win is not a priority. Some of these guys need to evaluated like sales, as they are selling a product. You don't win, you don't get paid beyond an average base, you don't care you are gone.
Oh come on
mikeinbloomfield : 3/14/2019 10:33 am : link
Let's see how they do in the draft, but WITH Vernon and Collins the Giants were next to last in sacks. None of the teams we play against is going have any trouble keeping Wynn and a band of nobodies out of the backfield. Who's playing opposite Jenkins? Who's playing next to Peppers?

The defense is going to be terrible. On offense, the good news is that at least they're one dimensional! With Eli throwing to the likes of Corey Coleman and (hopefully!) Chris Hogan, get ready for Barkley and company to get 40 carries and losing on average 28-10.
Pats win because they have Jag++ guys and a franchise QB.

I don't dispute that at all - I just don't remember the feeling going into 2007 that people thought we'd be flat-out awful.

team concept? That is an interesting idea. Part of their excellence as you point out. If you are not bought in you are gone.

Holy shit. that page reads like an onion article. Most of those predictions couldn't have gone more wrong.

look at his under players most likely to under perform:

Quote:
Ryan Wilson: Randy Moss. The Patriots have too many offensive weapons, and Moss won't ever be the guy he was in Minnesota. Not until the Patriots hire Brian Billick as the offensive coordinator, anyway.

Moss went: 98 for 1493 and 23 TD's on the highest scoring offense in NFL history (at the time - now 2nd highest all time)

Most overblown stories:

Quote:
Stuart Fraser: The entire Vick business. Yeah, I know, it's a major story and it's entirely plausible the Falcons will collapse (heck, I've just predicted it). It's being covered as if it were a natural disaster or something, so in terms of relative levels of overblowing...

there is some laughably wrong stuff in there that seems almost intentional.

Mike, take your head out of the oven. Open your eyes. Shepard is still on the team. Engram is still on the team. Neither is OBJ but Neither was Toomer Burress Smith ,Etc. They actually have two decent safeties at the moment, which is one more than last year. And if you think Vernon was any better than Wynn we were probably watching two different teams last year. Its going to be ok. Don't believe the hype (AGAINST the Giants, that is ;))!
I look at 2000
Rjanyg : 3/14/2019 10:44 am : link
I know we got spanked in the Super Bowl that year but we were 7-9 the year before, just realizing that Kerry Collins could still play, Tiki just started to come into his own, no TE threat, a solid defense and a decent coaching staff.

2007 we had a lot more including a draft class that we cog contributions from. The previous season being an 8-8 playoff team that almost won on the road in Philly.

We won win the super bowl this year but this team is a long way from finished. The key quote from DG at the combine is " the last I checked we play in September".

Hang in there BBI.

Well, Tiki left and we didn't resign our starting left tackle, either.

There wasn't a lot of confidence.
That's true.
BrettNYG10 : 3/14/2019 10:47 am : link
I vaguely recall a lot of talk about that being a re-tooling year. A step back to take a step forward.

I thought people expected a middling team that year.
It's a different league than it was in 2007 and 2011
Lambuth_Special : 3/14/2019 10:47 am : link
A lot have teams have gotten smart to the new CBA rules by new. Giants still seem a bit behind, and that explains the struggles.
And with a moderately good '19 season

And how much better did Beckham being on field make Shepard, Engram, et al? Defenses won't have to tilt coverage to his side anymore.

And sorry, but the defense was terrible last year, then they went and subtracted a bunch of players. Adding Peppers and Beal isn't going to help enough. Losing 40-38 is still losing.
