Hypothetical Question - Trading Sterling Shepard

Saos1n : 3/14/2019 5:21 pm
He’s a FA after this upcoming season. Can’t play on the outside. Tate does his best work out the slot.

How would you feel about dealing Shepard and adding additional picks this year, rather than waiting until 2 seasons from now, when we might get a comp pick. I can’t see DG extending him.

Say a low 3rd or high 4th round pick. Patriots?

Thoughts?
I would

do it now and than sign Crabtree.
No problem
Big Blue '56 : 3/14/2019 5:23 pm : link

If it's a 5th or 6th, take it and run.

dont screw up the conditional pick in 2020! Giants cant lose by getting these!
So we trade OBJ

Sign Tate and trade Shepard?

This place is getting crazy. I think we need more than 1 WR.

I dont think they’re going to keep Shepard either.
Brown Recluse : 3/14/2019 5:26 pm : link
Like Landon Collins - he’s a good player and fan favorite who will want much more than he should be paid. And fans will go apeshit when they dont bring him back. I’d be fine with a trade rather than letting him walk next year and getting nothing back. He’s probably sick right now anyway about his BFF getting traded away.

One thing to keep in mind though- the Giants should have $100m+ in cap space next year. So if they wanna splurge on him, they can do it.
should be traded but won't be
GiantsFan84 : 3/14/2019 5:26 pm : link
just like collins should have been traded but wasn't

DG is clueless. but let's all pretend like he's a GM that was touched by the hand of god

Maybe he can trade you with Tesla and SHO'NUFF for a bag of donuts. We'll never get the additional hot dog for you.

You would re-sign Shepard and have both him and Tate play the slot? Or you would move one to a position they don't play well?
Shepard was drafted by Reese.
Mr. Bungle : 3/14/2019 5:29 pm : link
He's doomed.
I mentioned Shep as a trade target in the Hogan thread.
Diver_Down : 3/14/2019 5:29 pm : link
Him and Engram are the last pieces from Reese (that have trade value). Shep entering the last year and is likely not to be signed. I love Shep's willingness to block. I just think he'll get more than what DG will pay. With $90M in cap space next year, we can assume more signings than player loss to FA negating any comp picks. I would think his value is a third.

I think Engram can be shopped also. He has 2 years remaining on his contract so I would peg him to yield a 2nd. If we can get Hockenson with #17, then we would have an actual receiving/blocking TE that fits a run-first offense.

same as collins. and if we keep him and let him go after the season we won't get a good comp pick because the giants will have 100M in cap space next year and splurge on FA.

he should either be extended now (bad idea as he's not worth big money) or traded before the season starts to maximize the return on him
that was an idea

Sure, if you want to deal in 5th round picks. I don't consider late round picks of having much value. With his age and contract, I don't see too many teams willing to give up a 4th or higher. I know people love having tons of picks, but in my opinion, there isn't much distinguishing a 5th rounder from the UDFA. I'm sure the draft geeks will be quick to come back at me with examples such as Tom Brady. But for every exception, there are a hundred guys that wash out of the NFL who are late rounders.
We can't trade Jack Rabbit
Tim in Eternal Blue : 3/14/2019 5:42 pm : link
We don't have any other corners
Shepard is an ascending talent at WR
AdamBrag : 3/14/2019 5:44 pm : link
and is a very solid slot WR.

He is also extremely well liked by his teammates and around the league.

Trading him would be incredibly stupid. So, yes, I expect he will be traded.
I think
mittenedman : 3/14/2019 5:46 pm : link
the guy you could see traded is Engram.
Tate will be 31 this season
bluepepper : 3/14/2019 5:46 pm : link
Shepard 25.

Curious for a rebuilding team to make this switch if that's the plan.
I don't see them trading SS
montanagiant : 3/14/2019 5:54 pm : link
I think they will pick one of the tall big receivers with either the second 1st rd pick or the 2nd rd pick

Don't get ahead of yourself, maybe they'll just cut him.
Not worth the 10M he will command in a year
ArlingtonMike : 3/14/2019 6:09 pm : link
Mentioned it on another thread. Any guy who is not in the plans for 2020 should be unloaded. Don’t make the same mistake you made with Collins. Fet some value on Shep while you can either now or during the season. Good player that has likely reached his ceiling. Scares no one with his speed and hands are inconsistent.

Of course this applies to Eli as well, but that ain’t ever gonna happen with this ownership group. More concerned with optics than winning.
We didn't make a mistake on Collins
WillieYoung : 3/14/2019 6:26 pm : link
We asked for a two knowing we'd get a 3 in free agency. Stop watching the NFL network.
We won’t get a 3 in FA for Collins.
ArlingtonMike : 3/14/2019 6:31 pm : link
Likely cancelled out by our recent signings. Trading him for a draft pick was the right move to capitalize this year. In retrospect, a 4 might have even been worth it though reports indicate he could have gotten a 3 (but who really knows).

Who wouldn’t want an extra 4 in a draft filled with good OL in that range?
Please No
kes722 : 3/14/2019 8:26 pm : link
SS is a solid receiver and a very good blocker, he has an old school feel to him.

I wouldn't want to trade him unless is was a crazy offer.

Besides SS is the kind of receiver coaches love.

Hard worker
Sacrificed his body blocking
Keeps quiet
Catches most balls
Pretty good on 3rd down
Shep is a Free Agent next year
ChathamMark : 3/14/2019 9:05 pm : link
Don't see where teams would give a nice pick for him, only for him to leave somewhere else in Free Agency.

They need him
darren in pdx : 3/14/2019 11:07 pm : link
for this season so I don’t see them trading him unless they spend two high picks on receivers. 9mill/year is the going price for FA’s right now for aberage to good players and it’s just going to keep going up. Not going to get something cheaper unless they hit on draft picks.
Nothing would surprise me
djm : 3/14/2019 11:29 pm : link
Shepard wasn’t drafted by DG so he’s fair game. I’d like to keep him though if possible. He and Tate aren’t redundant you can make both work plus Tate does a lot of his work on the outside anyway.
If they can trade him, they should
Go Terps : 3/14/2019 11:30 pm : link
The package mentioned above involving Rosen would be fantastic.
Shepherd is not worth
Bill in UT : 3/15/2019 1:06 am : link
a second contract. His numbers don't even match Reuben Randle"s, and everyone here said that Randle sucked as a #2. Tate can easily replace him, if we can get something in return. If Engram can show that the latter part of last year is the new him and not a fluke, he's got a place on this team. This will be his make or break year.
Shep is exactly the type of player they should extend now
BlueLou'sBack : 3/15/2019 2:21 am : link
for 4-5 more years if they can get it done for about 8 mil per year.

Or this franchise will spin its wheels indefinitely.
