See the plan

Thegratefulhead : 3/14/2019 6:21 pm
People in the media are saying we have no plan. I think the plan is getting pretty easy to see. We drafted a generational talent at Running back. A physical offensive line is being built. We just added a receiver that can block. We know Shepherd can block. We need a dual threat at tight end. One that can stretch the field but block like a motherfuker. You can win with a mediocre QB with a team like that. Got the me first knucklehead guys out add guys with character. That is a recipe to compete. It might be boring but it still works, there are recent examples. So the people in the media complaining that he doesn't have a plan being intellectually dishonest. It's Dave Gettleman for Christ's sake, what else did we expect him to do? It's really very predictable.
In your version of the plan, does that team have a defense?

The plan

is to be as competitive as they can while they build out the future of the team via the draft. It isn't super hard to see.

They brought in on piece with the trade. A young safety. They should use this draft to bring in blue chip talent at LB and DL, lay the foundation for the new D. Gotta pick the right guys and turn Beckham into four players.

Agree though, until this team fields a D again it will suck.

Think that’s pretty clear. On side not, I think it’s anout time to retire use of the term generational back.

it does we just added a veteran safety and a young one with a ton of speed that is very versatile. I expect us to go defense heavy in the draft and would not be surprised if we also sign Golden. Not even saying whether I agree or not with the plan I'm saying it's obvious what they are doing.

I will try to lay off the generational back thing. I didn't want us to draft him but I'm really excited by him. I love watching Earl Campbell as a kid I think this kid is that dominant not that powerful but I think he could dominate a game he's the best player on the field when he steps on it
Can the blocking WR get open?
chuckydee9 : 3/14/2019 6:30 pm : link
Keep the safety honest?

Also I assume its very easy to find a blocking TE that can "stretch the field but block like a motherfuker".. Just invent a time machine and get Gronk 2010..

This signing is just a worse J Stewart signing.. bring in the old people..

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting different results. We’re going to run it back this year with Eli. I can’t wait for next offseason when we do the same fukadome thing. Well, Eli can still win, right? We just need to put some pieces around him. Or the excuse: no OBJ - he didn’t have the WRs. What bull.

BlueManCrew : 3/14/2019 6:32 pm : link
Best RB in the league behind an improved oline. Clutch, possession style third down receivers in Shep and Tate, a TE that can stretch the field. Control the clock, keep pass rushers fresh. We can do this!!!!!
The Giants have tried
kelsto811 : 3/14/2019 6:33 pm : link
To commit to half assed rebuilds time after time. In 1 season DG turned 90+% of the Giants roster over. I truly believe he wouldn't have re-signed O'dell without push from Mara and coming in as a 1st year GM with Eli Manning (especially after the debacle the prior season), you likely sold yourself as compelled to make a run with Eli. Tried, clearly wasn't going to work with Eli on his last legs, the drama sorrounding O'dell, and the dramatic difference in top to bottom talent.

Skip to now and the Giants have 2 1st rounders and 12 total picks in the upcoming draft. They have the makings of a solid core on the OL. And they'll likely pick up more picks during this season by trading guys like Jackrabbit, on there way to what is likely another top 10 pick. Eli will be gone after this year. There's still big holes and question marks but its a start.

calm your panic bro. we arent going with eli beyond this year imo. we are just trying to remain as competitive as possible while rebuilding, it isnt difficult to understand. eli is in the last year of his deal....he wont be back. a trade for rosen, a move up for murray or haskins, or a 2020 QB will happen. either way by this time next year we are going to know who our QB of the future is for better or worse....

And this is overblown, too. Our DL has two young very talented players in Tomlinson and BJ Hill who moved positions mid season. A big jump in production from them isn't unrealistic. McIntosh seems to also have an upside though not as certain as the other two. Carter was groomed behind Vernon and has good tools. We've rebuilt the safety position with solid vets and Jenkins, Beal and Hailey have promise to be a decent core at CB. So, yes the plan has a defense as well.
I think the plan

The media narrative that no one knows what we're doing. I find that to be weak reporting. Think about the things Gettleman has said, think about Gettleman's history. You think about the New York Giants history. I agree with with Jon C too. I'm just talkin about the identity. I think the first year after signing that 95 million contract they expected better. I suspect they were even very direct with him about things like doing the ESPN interview and then he went and did it in his first year after they paid him the big bucks. What the actual fuck? I just saw Landon Collins on NFL Network and he said he was not surprised by the OBJ trade at all. Honestly I'm not. I know the return isn't what we wanted but I think it was the best we were going to get if we wanted him out of the NFC.

In terms of rebuilding strategy
UberAlias : 3/14/2019 6:58 pm : link
Saying the plan is to rebuild the line is meaningless conversation. I’ve heard many in here say this and it’s laughabke. If rebuilding the line wasn’t a big part if one’s plan, you’d lack the acumen to post on this board, much less run an NFL team.

The question here is about DGs vision. In that sense I feel the team overestimated where this team was a year ago. They probably looked at 2017 as a fluke season at the hands a terrible head coach who was over his head but a roster a year away from the playoffs and opportunity to add a major weapon. And a former SB MVP QB with years left of good play.

That is not the tone this year. The sense I get is they are far more morivated to move on from Eli this year than they were a year ago. They flip flopped on thinking about Colins and OBJ. I get it, OBJ decision may have been motivated by some things he said on Twitter and his sitting out at the end of the season. But that’s a miss calculation on the team 100%. OBJ didn’t suddenly change. He’s the exact same guy now he was when DG signed on a GM of this team. If they expected a different OBJ to materialize when he signed the big contract, then shame on them. You have to be a fool to think that. Is should have been, accept OBJ for what he is or move on.
Opportunity to add a major weapon

Old school Giants football. And we need another Mark Bavaro now.

Dont sleep on the Dorsett interest either. They need a guy who can blow the top off the defense Stephen Baker style. Thats a key piece to this kind of team.
the plan
PaulBlakeTSU : 3/14/2019 7:03 pm : link
feels similar to hiring Phil Jackson to come in and demand running the triangle while poo pooing the 3-point shot.

grateful head posted except for running the clock, scoring when you can helped by play/action passing and occasional long pass by Eli. my versionincluded a a”d”helped by FA ER and inside lb’er and safety that was being addressed. With every move Gettleman has made so far for sure. I am just really not happy with the way they're portraying us. Really, you can't see what the Giants are doing come on man. I'm not responding to anyone in particular with this so nobody get bent. Same people laughing about us now we went a couple of games to start the season be on the bandwagon and talkin character and all the cliches you would expect. Cleveland did what they did last year and no one really expect them to do shit. talking heads are already talking about them being one of the favorites to go to the Superbowl. I am really intrigued by what might happen over there if they start losing a few games to start. I'm okay with us talking bad about our team but no one else. Makes me want to circle the wagons and defend everything get them in his doing and hate on everyone else

You Can Agree With Gettleman's "Plan,"
clatterbuck : 3/14/2019 7:49 pm : link
you can like some of the moves he's made to change the roster. You can agree that Collins is a stand-up guy and a good player but wasn't worth the long-term investment. You can really like the possibilities of Barkley operating behind a much improved OL. But you can still think the person who said "you don't give up on talent" gave up on Beckham too soon. I don't buy the "addition by subtraction" argument, not in this case. Even if all the moves turn out well (and I hope they do), even if Gettleman has another great draft (and I hope he does), The Giants will not be a better team without OBJ. To paraphrase the old Accorsi line, "you can't have too many generational talents."

This. This appears to be a good draft to have 12 picks and start restocking the defense with young, low-cost talent. Defense will probably be weak again, but opportunity for good building blocks.

Unfortunately the nfl doesn’t give out awards for being competitive. Unless that plan secured a franchise QB they can try to be as competitive as they want.
It will all be for nothing if they can’t secure that QB. And the best way to do that is to be bad in a good QB class year which next year is.

Screw being “competitive”. They tried to be competitive with a similar plan for two years and thats resulted in 8 wins. It’s time to wake up from this “competitive dream”.

I guess I should have expected this when we hired a 70+ year old GM
