Landon Collins presser (and a question)

j_rud : 3/14/2019 6:46 pm
Pretty typical stuff. He'll make the Giants pay and all that typical introductory stuff. Said when visiting Washington Snyder took him and his family out to dinner and gave him what Snyder claimed was one of two signed Sean Taylor jerseys. Power move, but knowing Snyder some underling signed that thing in the lobby of the restaurant. In any case, a question...

In reference to the Giants Collins stated "I get to prove they should have at least tagged me". But wasn't he pretty vocal about not wanting the franchise tag? Not a big deal, just a momentary distraction from all the Beckham talk.

He’s an ex-Giant.

Fu*k him!
What bothers me - and I wouldn't have paid him what WAS
jcn56 : 3/14/2019 6:49 pm : link
did, is that the Giants never engaged him in any salary discussions (at least that we know of).

Same with Shepard. Other teams extend their young talent, which provides both good will on the part of players and usually gets them somewhat below market. That's not the Giants MO, and they've been paying for it.

Collins was at least worth a discussion.

I think he said he wasn't going to sign the tag and sit out until the season started at best.

Maybe he's offended he didn't get the tag, but in all honesty by not being tagged he achieved financial security for life. That's the one thing I wouldn't hold a grudge over.

players regarding the tag

There are many more sources out there saying he wanted to come back

And outside of a new deal, that leaves the possibility of a franchise tag, which Collins prefers to steer clear of.

"Honestly, I don't want it," Collins said. "I know what type of player I am. I'm going to bring forth hard work, talent, play-making abilities to the game each and every week. Why would I want to play under a one-year deal? If something happens I'm not guaranteed. And even though I'm guaranteed that for a year, I'm still not guaranteed."

"It is what it is," Collins said. "If they franchise tag me, I have to go from there. I can't go nowhere. There's not much I can do."

The more interesting part of the interview
USAF NYG Fan : 3/14/2019 7:06 pm : link
For me was when asked if he was surprised to hear about Beckham Jr he said, "no". Then there was a pause and he said something about him not being in their plans. Its the no and then took a pause to choose his next words carefully that stands out to me. Why wasn't he surprised? Everyone else seemed to be.

I'm likely reading way too much into it though.

now these fucking millennials are enticed by a signed jersey and going to their childhood favorite team... the other millennial wanted to play with his bestie so bad, he's okay with moving to Cleveland... yes, Cleveland OHIO.
He said he wouldn't play on the tag and now he's crying

Every player

says that about playing their former team. Will miss him but the team already found a replacement. He got stupid money the team didn’t have the luxury to afford.

was very productive, great team player - pride a lttle bruised beacuse Giants did not fight to keep him.

agreed with them letting him go, but it's not like he didn't hold up his end of the nargain

I get that he grew up a skins fan, but I believe once you put on the blue, there is only one Taylor - the Linebacker. All the best to him, and his childhood dream. Here's to a healthy rest of career, may it be filled with many losses.

when the Giants want one of there own players they sign them. I am sure some have get down when people leave but the the Giants have taken care of the ones the wanted to keep imo. Appreciate Collins and his effort and attitude but not seeing the 13million per year value.

has him saying he doesn't want to get tagged, but if he does he has no choice. He doesn't say he will hold out but acknowledges his distaste for it
Quote:
...even Collins admits the most likely scenario is that the Giants slap the "franchise tag" on him before the free agent signing period opens in March. That would likely guarantee him about $13 million in 2019, but it would keep him off a market where he could probably find a deal worth $50 million over four seasons with more than $20 million guaranteed.

That's why he has no interest in getting the franchise tag.

"Honestly I don't want it," he said. "I know what type of player I am. I'm going to bring forth hard-work, talent, play-making abilities to the game each and every week. Why would I want to play under a one-year deal? If something happens I'm not guaranteed. And even though I'm guaranteed that for a year, I'm still not guaranteed."

Of course, Collins knows that if the Giants use the tag "I don't have a choice."

And that Bortles play in the season opener...

No thank you Landon.
Didn’t they do him a major favor by not

Tagging him? I find that to be a rather polite move to let the player go get his money without being held up with the tag.

1. Collins saying he couldn't wait to move on from NYG when all the trades started happening during last season.
2. Doug Williams referring to Collins as a ball hawk.

He just was never really a game-changing safety. I have no problem not signing him to a crazy contract. Let’s get back to the days of a pass rush please.
