Apologies if I got the baseball aspect wrong, since I'm not a baseball fan
But I was thinking of how many shining stars there have been over the years...and how many of them have faded, due in part because they get swept up in the hoopla that is NYC.
On one side, we have been the constant professionals who have not let fame go to their heads: Eli Manning, Derek Jeter, David Wright, Henrik Lundqvist...
But on the flip side, you have guys who SEEMINGLY, on the hoof, were low-key, down to earth kids who, for one reason or another, got big heads and became more of a distraction than an asset. What was once a promising young athlete with all the talent in the world to succeed turned into someone who was essentially chewed up and spit out by NYC, particularly the media.
Guys like Odell Beckham Jr., Kristaps Porzingis, Matt Harvey, Jeremy Lin, Jeremy Shockey (to a lesser extent).
So what can we attribute this to? Is it a situation that NYC just gave them a platform to show their true colors? Or did NYC, more or less, corrupt them and turn budding superstars into, well, douches?
Eli is washed, DG was the comfortable GM to hire. A once proud franchise now the laughingstock and only digging a deeper hole. Such an embarrassment from top to bottom.
This is pretty accurate in my opinion

The hatred some Giants fans have for Eli is pathetic.
Like the chairman says ...”if I can make it there, I’ll make it anywhere” .

I remember when we drafted him, Fassel praised his maturity. One of the few things I remember when we took him.
Think about the biggest legends over the last 30 years...
Jeter, Mariano, Piazza, Wright, Eli
All quiet superstars who toe the company line..every interview is a mixture of cliches.
The media scrutiny and brighter lights are not kind to the athlete who is active on social media and speaks his mind freely.
I mean... Mets were even talking about trading Syndergaard.

And I feel it's why we can't have good things for an extended period of time. You have these potentially revolutionary, game-breaking talents and our New York teams can't get rid of them before or during their prime. Sometimes it works out (see Jeremy Lin), but it is quite worrisome that so many bright lights burn out so fast and become pariahs on their team.

When was this Huge talent of professionalism not successful and well loved in ANY market on ANY team?
Joe Montana
Jerry Rice
EMMIT Smith
Troy Aikman
Tom Brady
See Pittsburgh, Cleveland w Johnny Boozeball, Dallas w TO, , Atlanta w Vick, Oakland w anyone, Washington w anyone, Cincinnati w chad Johnson, randy moss in Minnesota, etc etc.
It’s often the player personality and how they stride for professionalism that correlated to their success in a team game.
NBA is the exception of the big 3 as one player can carry a team and does t effect 30-70 guys. Hence why Allen Iverson, Shaq, Lebron, thrive.
Just off top of my head..
Just off top of my head..
Noted about NBA... I shouldn't have included those guys.... good point about NBA
