"There are two types of players in the NFL.

Players who love football and players who love what football gives them.

The locker room can spot both within days."

This quote basically sums up what we loved about the 80's and early 90's teams, you knew they loved football. interesting time to post this quote after the week the giants are having.
Agreed

I don't think that's decade specific

the 2007-11 teams absolutely cared about football, but that's always how it looks when winning. Times have changed but generally speaking the teams that prep more will have more success, and that happens when you have a good culture with good coaching - we haven't had either in a while.
Tynes was a football player...
AnnapolisMike : 3/15/2019 10:04 am : link
He just happened to be a kicker.
Love Tynes....
ryanmkeane : 3/15/2019 10:05 am : link
should be in the ring of honor
It feels like a cloud that has been hanging over this organization

I wonder what happened this week to make it seem that way?
Well said.

No. Good guy. Made a great kick, but he also missed two before that would have end the game in regular time.

he was our kicker for 6 seasons including both super bowls with some really clutch kicks in the playoffs. He should be there.
It's stupid
lightemup : 3/15/2019 10:20 am : link
to say that all players in the 80s and 90s were all about the love of the game. Back then you saw players behind their mask and postgame interviews and that was it. With social media today, we can see who these players are. Nothings changed as far as players and their intent with the game of ffootball
Talk about a guy
Dnew15 : 3/15/2019 10:26 am : link
that got dealt a tough hand at the peek of his career too.

BTW - I totally agree and I think the Giants purged that group from this roster this offseason
Thats a great quote.

Great quote.
Tyne's assumption seems to be that players who love football
GeofromNJ : 3/15/2019 10:39 am : link
are better players than players who play for what football gives them. Not sure this is necessarily the case. Players who retire at the top of their game (and are not injured) to pursue other avenues are often good players. Maybe Tynes is thinking they could be even better players. But this doesn't hold for Jim Brown or Tiki Barber, for example.
I think for OBJ's
Beer Man : 3/15/2019 10:48 am : link
It was probably a lot of both. IMO, he played the game with a great passion, but he also basked in the fame and attention it brought him and allowed it to go to his head.

I think his point is that if you play because you love the game you are more apt to make that additional sacrifice, put your body on the line a little more, sacrifice for the good of the team and winning. Those qualities are the life blood of winning championships usually whether football or any other sport
The cynic in me says...
BamaBlue : 3/15/2019 10:58 am : link
NFL football is no longer a 'game' it's a high-stakes business. Players are packaged, produced and turned into commodities. Fans are consumers; the NFL and their business partners/media are trying to create and pluck more golden geese.

Loyalty is a weakness and usually has a cost... Owners want entertainment, not necessarily championships and players want to use their platform to elevate their own interests.
Is he
ajr2456 : 3/15/2019 11:00 am : link
Saying Collins and Odell didn’t love football? Because that would be untrue.

With that increased spotlight (esp. in NYC) and the crazy money these guys make today, I would be surprised if there isn't a higher percentage of the "loves what football does for them" crowd today.
RE: Tynes was a football player...
morrison40 : 3/15/2019 11:30 am : link
Thanks for saying that!
In fairness, I think Odell truly loves football
CT Charlie : 3/15/2019 11:42 am : link
and he loves his teammates. But by nature he's an artist and a performer, and in a team sport this doesn't necessarily lead to success for the team.

Oh my, I can see you missed quite a few games in the 2008-10 seasons.
Plax skipping practice for all of 2007 - CULTURE!!!

You guys, man, I have to give it to you. You are exceptionally skilled at tailoring your memories to match what you want them to be.

think that is where Reese and Ross went astray. Too much about measurables with them. Especially on the OL.

It's still very much here, considering this team was subpar before Beckham even got here. That's how long this has been going on for..
The cloud came in 2012
ajr2456 : 3/15/2019 1:59 pm : link
it's not gone until this team wins.
