Rhett Ellison seems expensive

jbeintherockies : 3/15/2019 12:31 pm
For a guy that is an "adequate-at-best blocker" and catches 25 passes a year, his salary for 2019 and 2020 seem pretty high at $4,475,000 and $4,975,000.

His receiving stats for 2017 and 2018 are:

G GS Rec Yds Avg Lng TD
14 12 25 272 10.9 29 1
16 14 24 235 9.8 27 2

I understand that he is not a receiving TE (although he is sure handed); but nothing he is doing seems to justify his salary. He is a versatile player and I like his game. But, how far off is Simonson or a free agent from Ellison?

He’s a meh

Receiver and a meh blocker. Way overpaid. Seen enough of him the last two years. Need an upgrade at the TE position.
Poor distribution of our cap money here.

Hes OK. At the right price, you want him on your team. This isn't the right price.
Said he was a bum when we signed him

one of Jerry's Kids. Cut him tomorrow and no one will miss him.
Can we cut him and sign
KWALL2 : 3/15/2019 12:37 pm : link
Eifert. He played for 5.5 last year.

He's healthy? I'll cut Ellison and others For Eifert. Hes only 28.
I agree, for what he does,

he is waaay overpaid...but Simonson is not the answer either.....

I'd agree, but Shurmur seems to love him. He had him in Minnesota, which will help him avoid the axe that all the other Reese signings seem to have over their head. Hell, last year after Engram got hurt, Shurmur dared to make the following comparison:

Quote:
“I made the analogy, and this probably isn’t fair because I don’t know Mark Bavaro that well, but I sensed the same kind of aura when I met him the other night – just a tough guy that’s going to do what he’s asked and let the chips fall,” Shurmur said Wednesday of the All-Pro tight end who played for the Giants from 1985-1990. “That’s what Rhett is.”

And he also said this

Quote:
“I’m fond of Rhett, who he is as a player and as a person,” Shurmur said. “He epitomizes a player that you want on your team. He’s very good at what he does, he can line up anywhere, he finds a way to make plays. Some guys just have a knack for that. … Very trustworthy and very tough, and he’s wired like a football player, and that is what you’re looking for.”

So, I'm willing to bet that Ellison is not going anywhere.
Jared Cook

had 68 rec and 900 plus 6tds. He would be a great fit.

I like the way you think but eifert will probably explode into a million pieces the next time he cuts or gets tackled. This guy is beyond injury prone.
He's the kind of player you want...

... filling out the roster on your team. You have a few superstars, a few bottom rung, players... and the rest are guys like Ellison. The higher the ratio of guys you have like Ellison filling out your roster to the bottom rung players the better your team is.

That said, he is overpaid.
Ellison is good player

Not every TE's value comes from the stat sheet. Plus, he's a better blocker than some of the posters here give him credit for. But by all means, let's sign Eifert...who has played 14 games in the last 3 seasons TOTAL. And just 6 games in the last 2 seasons.

Or Jared Cook, who is completely useless here as we have Evan Engram already in that role.

FFS. He does his job and he doesn't screw it up. You need guys like that on a football team, not everyone is going to be a superstar.

My hope

Was that the Giants could add a good two way tight end and then move Engram to either wide receiver or slot receiver. I don't think Shepherd or Tate would have any problem playing outside, plus the team can easily play double slot receiver and use that position similar to the way the patriots use the tight end position. When you have talent at a position you can always be creative, just like the giants were with a linebacker named Taylor.

I think this runs a big risk of the Peter Principle kicking in: You take a guy who's a dangerous weapon at TE and make him a JAG WR. You take a dangerous slot receiver and make him a JAG X-receiver. Sometimes guys are better where they are.
Much better blocker
LakeGeorgeGiant : 3/15/2019 2:55 pm : link
than you knuckleheads give him credit for.

Overpaid? Probably, but most of you are about 8 years in the past when it comes to contracts anyhow.
He’s Not

That good a blocker. Gets blown up at the point of attack often during the course of a game. Watched him closely this year trying to figure out why there were so many defensive players in our backfield every play. Often times he was culpable.

This is the correct answer.
after he botched drafting

for so many years in a row, he started handing out big money to role player free agents like ellison and dwayne harris. it will take a while to get out from under all the bad deals, but gettleman has made a lot of headway so far.
