Draftniks, are there any defensive difference-makers at 17?

Big Blue '56 : 3/15/2019 12:36 pm
Assuming we don’t use the pick in trade.

You never know who will be there of course, but your best guess as to who might be there and whether he is capable of making a big difference.
Just posted in the Devin White Thread
figgy2989 : 3/15/2019 12:39 pm : link
Devin Bush would not be a bad get at 17, especially if they go ER with the 6th pick.

I really want the Giants to be one of those teams that has a great YOUNG MLB. Been so long and is one of those positions the Giants, for whatever reason, always seem they could fill with retreads or late round picks.
Depends on who's there
jeff57 : 3/15/2019 12:40 pm : link
Brian Burns may be, and he would be a difference maker. Dexter Lawrence might be another. I'm not wild about the CBs, they could take a shot at one of them.
its a very deep draft
Pep22 : 3/15/2019 12:41 pm : link
we should do very well at 17 and 37
That's also the benefit of having an extra 1st
figgy2989 : 3/15/2019 12:42 pm : link
You can draft the best player available at a position of need and don't have to....dare I say...."reach" for a pick.

I am hoping the first two picks are on the defensive side of the ball and the 2nd rounder goes to the best OT available.
Really depends
Anakim : 3/15/2019 12:42 pm : link
I don't know who will be there at 17. Hell, based on what I'm reading, there's a solid chance that Ed Oliver Jr. may drop. If Burns is there, we should pounce.

I'm very high on the CB and S class. Higher than most. I think Byron Murphy Jr. is a top-12 prospect, Deandre Baker isn't too far behind, I can see a team falling in love with Greedy Williams's measurements, Trayvon Mullen is no slouch.

I think Chauncey Gardner-Johnson is a top-20 prospect, Adderley isn't too far behind...
Supposedly some good two-way TEs
giants#1 : 3/15/2019 12:43 pm : link
Mid-1st round is usually when those guys go off the board.

Oliver could fall
AcesUp : 3/15/2019 12:44 pm : link
Burns should be there, maybe even White. Every year a guy talked up as a Top 10 guy drops to around the 17 range, see Derwin James last year.
I'll go out on a limb
mavric : 3/15/2019 12:44 pm : link
knowing full well I will be skewered, hammered, mocked, and pronounced the board fool, but here goes.

"With the 17th pick in the 2019 NFL draft, the New York Giants pick T.J. Hockenson, Tight End out of Iowa" followed by a room full of "boos".

Assuming we'll get a stud defensive player with pick 6 and there will be a run on such players, we shock the world and get the next Jason Witten type player who was overlooked because of the frenzy of good defensive players going fast

Most experts have Hockenson going in the top 10. His teammate (also a TE) Noah Fant could also be a first round pick. Fant is essentially Engram, but there is a team out there that is going to take him in the first.
Wilkins and/or Ferrell
WillVAB : 3/15/2019 12:49 pm : link
Should be there at 17 and I’d be pumped if we nabbed either.
Unlikely Hockenson will be there
jeff57 : 3/15/2019 12:50 pm : link
Won't get past the Jags or Detroit at 7 and 8.
Dexter Lawrence
uncledave : 3/15/2019 12:52 pm : link
Deionte Thompson
Mack Wilson
Let's put it this way...
bw in dc : 3/15/2019 12:52 pm : link
A defender could be selected at all 32 spots in round one and every team would have selected a quality defender.

That would be a very good pick and allow EE to play outside more..

With all our needs at defense and o line, going high picking a TE would cause a riot

Wow, when’s the last time, you, as a big College guy, have seen that?
There is going
Amtoft : 3/15/2019 12:57 pm : link
to be some good choices for Def at 17. Plus someone always falls and in this deep draft that could mean there are quite a few good ones available. OL also could be a nice spot.
No chance
pjcas18 : 3/15/2019 1:00 pm : link
I draft a TE in the 1st for the 2nd time in 3 years.

history shouldn't dictate future, but man that's just poor usage of draft picks.

Also, I've heard Hockenson compared to Kelce, but is Kelce really a good blocker?

Not sure. I don't think he's known for blocking.
As for the O, Is there an OL you guys
Big Blue '56 : 3/15/2019 1:04 pm : link
would jump at if he was there at 17?

Andre Dillard or Jonah Williams, if he falls.
I watch a lot of cfb, not exact science but the top 20 are exciting
Eric on Li : 3/15/2019 1:06 pm : link
In particular here are some prospects projected in the teens that are of interest. The top 2 are Christian Wilkins and Brian Burns. Wilkins is a flat out stud at 315 pounds and still almost matched the type of athletic numbers put up by Fletcher Cox. He has freaky athleticism for a guy that size and made as many disruptive plays as anyone in the country (TFLs, blocks, 15 passes knocked down in his career). He was also the clear leader of a dominant team full of top 30 players in this draft. Burns is like Leonard Floyd, except better across the board in every way - more productive, more instinctive, more big plays, more polished moves. He’s young and played on some bad FSU teams but I think he has Jason Taylor/Jevon Kearse upside. I’d have no issue taking either of those guys at 6.

Beyond those 2 (and the unanimous top 5 overall) there are a lot of other names we’ve all seen mentioned. Ed Oliver is the closest thing to Aaron Donald since, and while that’s an unrealistic comp Gerald McCoy level athleticism is there. Montez Sweat broke every record at the combine and was way more productive than Floyd too, though he doesn’t seem to be as natural of a rusher. Same with Gary. Devin White is every bit the every down Lb Roquan Smith was last year. That’s 11 guys total with a strong emphasis on D, so yes, it seems possible there will be a real difference maker in range at 17 as there was last year w Derwin James and Vander Esch.
Dexter Lawrence and
markky : 3/15/2019 1:06 pm : link
Adderley might both be available at 17. Although I'd prefer Lawrence. Build the lines.

I agree but for me it would depend on what passrushing talent is available at 27.
17

You
Professor Falken : 3/15/2019 1:14 pm : link
come out of the first round with some combo like Sweat/Dillard or White/Burns, there's going to be a lot of happy campers on this board...for a change. :-)
Is this TE,
Big Blue '56 : 3/15/2019 2:59 pm : link
one of those can’t miss guys who can “do it all?”
no way in hell
bc4life : 3/15/2019 3:17 pm : link
Oliver is falling to 17
Devin Bush - He's fast, he can tackle and has good instincts
Ira : 3/15/2019 3:28 pm : link
.
T. J. Hockenson
wonderback : 3/15/2019 3:34 pm : link
Is the guy I want at #17. Doubt he’ll be there. Great blocker - would set the edge for us and make any OT instantaneously better. Barkley would kiss his feet every Sunday.
wonderback
bc4life : 3/15/2019 3:37 pm : link
he'll be there at 17? Guy like Irv Smith later on is way more likely
I think we'll look at offensive line at 17, but if it's not...
AdamBrag : 3/15/2019 3:45 pm : link
here's some guys:

Devin White, LB, LSU
Jerry Tillery, DT, Notre Dame
Brian Burns, Edge, FSU

I don't think ever. Now, there isn't an off-the-chart defender like LT, Bruce Smith, Deion, etc, but the depth is remarkable.

Personally, I think the sneakiest position this year is WR. I think there are close to 20 players worthy of taking in the first four rounds.

No OBJs of course, but how many would you guestimate have #1 receiver potential?
