Outside linebacker Markus Golden's deal is for one year and worth up to $4.75 million, per source. It has $2.225 million guaranteed. So a value deal for the Giants hoping to get the guy with 12.5 sacks rather than the one who had 2.5 sacks last season.
Wow

fantastic contract for the Giants.
No one should really complain

But I suspect they will.
Great deal.

Guess alot of teams were scared off by the injury or his market just wasn't hot for some reason.

Thats why I dont see why we dont try and get a 1 yr deal with Dennard ... since Cincy snagged Webb.
Wow
Amtoft : 3/15/2019 2:18 pm : link
a fairly young pass rusher for that cheap? Great move, but if he reverts to 2017 then he will cost a fortune next year so glad we got him cheap this year.

He also might have accepted less money knowing that Bettcher's scheme will boost his numbers if he is healthy
Question for cap guys
Tuckrule : 3/15/2019 2:19 pm : link
With a guy like golden why not give him a 1 year deal with a team option or options. If he produces as they expect or hope I guess they can always extend mid season. My question is why not put that into the initial contract? Does it effect the cap differently?

Because Golden wants to get paid. He thinks he will rebound and be able to negotiate much bigger contract.

Markus Golden: "There are a lot of great things about playing for James Bettcher... I loved to play for him." Says the 3-4 scheme fits me perfectly.

As Eric said, Golden wants to be in the best position to get a Trey Flowers contract next offseason. Even if he doesn't have that sort of offseason, showing he is healthy alone would probably have doubled his salary from what the Giants got him for.

Markus Golden on a why 3-4 scheme fits him: "I just love the way we play the 3-4 defense in James Bettcher's scheme.''

Markus Golden says he is feeling 100 percent and "ready to get back to where I was.'' Tore his ACL in 2017.

Shoot why not a 3rd year at 4.5 mil also, but only a team option! Oh wait he just signed with the Raiders damn!
wow
TommyWiseau : 3/15/2019 2:29 pm : link
that is a great deal
If
mdthedream : 3/15/2019 2:39 pm : link
he does well and gets paid from someone else we get a comp pick. Win Win for use.
they have an implicit team option
giants#1 : 3/15/2019 2:44 pm : link
it's called the franchise tag. And players going for "prove it" deals aren't going to go for explicit options for less money, especially an EDGE rusher like Golden. If he stays healthy and finishes with 8-10 sacks, he's looking at 5yrs/$12M+ per in FA next year.

?

So Fiddy you think a one year prove it with a serious sort of guarantee is a "plan" or direction?

Stop gap, finger in the dike more aptly put, no?

Part of his plan, his direction, is to not give out dead money-killing, multiyear contracts unless absolutely necessary. Headscratching mistake giving out that contract to OBJ, if you werent 100% all in. Hell get a reluctant pass from me on that one.
And then of course, continue building
Big Blue '56 : 3/15/2019 2:56 pm : link
from the draft
260 and he looks thick
VinegarPeppers : 3/15/2019 4:10 pm : link
For an outside LB he looks like a bigger version of Saquon. He does look great in his 2016 highlight reel and missed 2017 with the knee. So 2019 could his real comeback season where he can step up and get us 8-10 sacks, which would be a huge help.
Now I'm feeling like our defense is getting back to...
M.S. : 3/15/2019 4:18 pm : link

...those great teams of the mid-80s.
Fiddy - on that part we agree.
BlueLou'sBack : 3/15/2019 4:35 pm : link
Collecting a gang of draft picks, even many mid-late ones, in what appears to be a pretty deep draft at numerous positions, that's part of a plan.

This is a very smart, low risk deal.

Much better than the Martin contract.
No, people aren't complaining because this is actually
jcn56 : 3/15/2019 5:07 pm : link
a good deal - a good player at a reasonable salary.

I'm surprised the 50 people who usually bitch about 1 year contracts haven't turned up yet, though.
