Golden Tate Contract Details

Jon in NYC : 3/15/2019 5:33 pm
10M signing bonus
3M roster bonus this year
Base salaries are fully guaranteed for '19 and '20

No guaranteed money past that, so they can cut in '21 with a 5M dead cap hit.

It's basically a 2 year 23M deal with two team options.

A little excessive for a 31 year old WR, no?

the money just doesn’t matter for this year and likely won’t for next year. Guys with his character and work ethic don’t grow on trees.

$11.5M per year over the first two years. When we were paying OBJ $18M/year. Stupid is as stupid does.
Those who think this 30 year old is too old

Crabtree 31

AJ Green 30
D Baldwin 30
CHogan 30

The dude has never missed a game and looks to be in incredible shape, taking care of his mind and body pretty well. Quit making excuses for wanting to hate on him. Don’t blame him for us trading Odell. Give him the RESPECT he has earned and deserves. He is a GREAT player and teammate.

Well said.
30 is not too old to play WR
bluepepper : 3/15/2019 7:41 pm : link
I don't think anyone has said that. The question is how does a 30 y/o fit into a rebuild? If he's not past his prime already he will be in 2-3 years when hopefully you'll be ready to make a run.
The rebuild isn’t just getting young players
UConn4523 : 3/15/2019 7:46 pm : link
to be here for 5+ years, it’s getting veterans in here to pave the way, leading by example. If we are primed for a run in 2021 and he’s too old he will be replaced, what does that have to do with helping turn things around now?

Yea it’s not like the giants needed a wr or anything.

It's unbelievable that some people think we need to have our 2022 team on the roster this year. Worry about tomorrow when you need to.
I've followed sports for a long time

and honestly it never occurred to me that age didn't matter in a rebuild. You'll just replace these guys in a couple of years...okay.
Now that I see how the money is structured

this is another good love by DG. Tate is a competent, professional receiver who will give production and leadership. The big plays will have to come from Saquon and Engram (assuming he’s still here)

It’s not that it doesn’t matter. It just doesn’t matter to the extreme some posters are making it seems. Golden Tate was signed to provide leadership, stability, and improve the culture. All of that matters, especially on this team that lacked so much of each. Hopefully he’s playing here for a while but his job is to go to work right now. We have plenty of time between now and when he’s very cuttable to find upgrades at the position.

$18m for two years and if cut him then $5m dead
MM_in_NYC : 3/15/2019 9:33 pm : link
It's not horrible and will help prevent us from being embarrassingly bad. Better deal than most thought.

Still doesn't make a ton of sense if we're going to a full rebuild, which was the only possible justification for the Odell trade (which is still insufficient), but it's a nod to fans and completely not sucking -- and it's a decent deal for Tate to be honest.

Since I'm not giving up being a fan of the team despite the Odell trade absurdity I'll take this as something that will make Sundays slightly more enjoyable the next couple years and move on.

Golden Tate is a guy who produces, is a good locker room guy from all accounts, and has been relatively injury free. When guys like Devin Funchess are getting $13M for one year, this looks like a bargain. Funchess always seems to be playing with some sort of injury and has never put up more than 840 yards in a season.
Come on - he and Elise do all kinds of stuff for vets, kids and dogs.
Big Blue Blogger : 3/15/2019 9:46 pm : link
You want to begrudge them a couple of million?

Seriously, he's a good player who seems to have plenty of football left. Are the Giants paying a premium for character? Absolutely. Maybe it's worth it, maybe not. The last time this team aimed for culture change, they drafted a bunch of college captains who couldn't play. But there are positive precedents too, including 1984 and 2007.
Wait..

If the Giants have been clear on anything is that they are rebuilding the team culture. Tate is part of That rebuild. If successful, that will last more than two years.
