I keep reading people complaining that OBJ got traded because he was "me first" and his celebrations etc. Please go back and read what jtgiants has said. OBJ was traded predominantly because (1) he told Shurmur to fuck off numerous times; (2) he was constantly blaming Eli for getting injured; and (3) the team felt like he should have played.
I was a huge OBJ fan and disagreed with several friends that the Giants should get rid of him for years, but all these things smack of a player that was undercutting management. You just cannot have the inmates running the asylum. This is a team sport. Chemistry with your teammates is important, and you cannot have a situation where your constantly cursing out the coach. How can he have any authority withini the locker room in that situation
And a team must know they can count on you. I don't even think these things are debatable.
So it's not the me first attitude or the celebrations. Those things existed before he was signed to the new contract. If they were deal breakers he wouldn't have been signed. What changed was what was described above, and it cannot be tolerated in a locker room. I'm bummed to lose his talent, but it might be addition by subtraction
It'll either work or it won't. But it doesn't mean OBJ was a douche (he wasn't/isn't). And it doesn't mean Gettleman is a fool. At least not in March 2019.
It will have to play out.

Possibly but it looks more like a locker room cleansing move with the additional benefit of assets
I would have liked to find a way to keep him. But I get why we moved him and think we got market value in the end
The thought that they won't miss him on offense, or are even better without him, shows me that we have a bunch of clowns running the show who don't know their ass from the elbow.
I’ve heard the opposite from a very connected source. Yeah he was a fun teammate but not a good teammate
Merit Eli did hang him out to dry a few times we all discussed it here and 3 if true he faked an injury and made a business decision is more common than you think ..... but due to 1 and some “personality” traits (see 3) that are undesirable in a leader he had to go
Considering this the trade is not bad at all .... once people see Peppers play it’ll all be cool
I couldn't find it, but it was on 3/12. Hope that helps
An individual who undermines the culture, even if it's not coming from a me first malicious place, certainly cannot be considered a good teammate whether he's well-liked or not. That's aside from almost blatant callouts of coaches & teammates alike. Nor can you do an interview with someone who has nothing to do with your career and shit talk your colleagues
You can say his talent is worth the risk, but you can't call that "a good teammate"
Probably because it happened twice in a span of several months both times BEFORE Odell got paid. Just because a guy feels that way doesn't make him right, but I do understand.
OBJ Sr - ( New Window )
The asshole didn't fall far from the tree.
We didn’t hear about any of these three narratives before the trade happened and the only media people who have pushed them are Anita Marks and Russ Salzberg. Doesn’t pass the smell test.
2) coaches constantly spoke with him about his behavior
3) a lot of his "calibrations" were in poor taste and some flat out inappropriate
4) he threw his QB under the bus
5) instead of getting ready for the playoffs he when on a booz cruise
Those are just the thing we know about and if you dont think he cared more about the attention he was getting then the betterment of the team then you haven't been watching.
Cancer may be too strong of a word be he was definitely a constant negative distraction
Addition by subtraction.
Second, you're mad about people saying he was traded due to being a "me-first" guy, but then the 3 reasons you list are things that sound very anti-team and selfish. What exactly is your gripe here?

Yes, it is quite possible that OBJ did every awful thing that the Giants claim that he did. But it's also possible that these stories are more about the Giants' organization trying to win the PR battle and justify the trade of their superstar WR.
If the Giants thought OBJ was that big a problem they never should have signed him to a long-term deal.
The important thing is they’ll continue to be players like Odell, Brown, Ramsey, etc coming into the league. The Giants will end up drafting some, and they’re going to have to learn how to deal with those players. You can’t just keep trading players away because you can’t handle them.

But I’m not buying these stories. Sure Odell had his issues but these narratives seem like a team desperate to push the narrative in their favor and win back support from those upset with the trade.

Also something would have came out way before this trade. Message board posters get information, I would think if he told Shurmur to fuck off it would have made the front pages.
It's just a saying. And a pretty well known saying as
well. Not equating an NFL team to a prison.
But you're also missing the point. According to jtgiants, this had nothing to do with social media or any of the other trappings in current society. It has to do with OBJ saying fuck off numerous times to his coach and quitting in his team last year.
Those are offenses you simply cannot abide in a team sport.

What reason would jtgiants have for posting this information on an anonymous message board? None. Just because the Giants did a good job keeping it in house at the time, doesn't mean it didn't happen
Is it reall that difficult for you to see his actions were divisive and self-promoting
The interview itself was enough for me to say see ya.
Add in, missing 16 of 32 games, the play off debacle, not wanting to play with Eli, telling the coach to fuck off, what is there that is confusing you.
The Giants were never going to win with the culture this diva promoted.
I was hoping for this trade, thrill the moment it happen. See many others are joining the party late.
Unless I missed it no beat writer has put these claims in an article.
When I was in the USMC, if I told that to a company commander, I'd soon find myself a civilian.
Fix Eli's useless Oline. (Yes, they are getting there...)

I really don't like the term "letting the inmates run the asylum" when referring to an professional sports team or league. This isn't a prison or an asylum, it's a multi- billion dollar corporation/company and its revenues rely solely on the players, in particular the star players like OBJ. With the rise of social media we are going to see more and more players speaking out and having their own personal platforms. Beckham himself is a multi-million dollar mini-corporation and is not going to abide by the old-school rules of letting team ownership and management speak for everybody and decide how everything is done. It's a new world and whether you like it or not that's how it's going to be. Beckham is still a loved by his teammates and works tirelessly and wants to win more than anyone else in the world (we all know how competitive he is at heart). He is also a good person by all accounts (not an a-hole), he just happens to have a business to look after (his own) and the Giants did not want to compromise with that. They clearly want to run things like it's the 1980s again and I sense that we are going to pay for it with another half-decade of poor to mediocre football.

Now if you're trying to say the players should be setting the standards and priorities, then let them start their own fucking league and open their own fucking stadiums and invest their own billions. Meanwhile, they work for others, and the Boss makes the rules, anywhere, period. Don't like it, hit the road..
When I was in the USMC, if I told that to a company commander, I'd soon find myself a civilian.
if he told the head coach fuck off in a daRK closet he should have been fired, period.
The Browns didn't know anything about this? Before they shipped millions worth of draft choices and players to the Giants they never bothered to check out what kind of a team player he was and what was he like in the locker room?
Gullible
To get a decent OL and a Safety along with a 1st and a 3rd for a great WR who was more trouble than he was worth and a LB who was not going to be here next year anyway is a decent haul under the circumstances.
Will it work out only time will tell but I'm not upset with the moves. I wish OBJ and OV well with their new team. Time to move on.

They also signed Kareem Hunt, so they clearly aren’t afraid of controversy.
Best thing that could have happened to OBJ. Couldn't have taken another year of Manning forcing the ball to him in triple coverage.
Manning had mostly lousy pass protection, but he couldn't sidestep a road grader bearing down on him.
When your boss says move him you do, although you try to do the best you can for your boss in that deal.OBJ from thatSunday was an ex Giant walking.
Odell is coming off and injury, Eli is responsible.
Brady never sets his receivers up to be injured.
Eli had to be told he was setting his WR's up. As if he didn't know he was getting his receivers killed.
I believe he was not too thrilled about Eli still remaining as the QB temporarily. If you ask the receivers Im sure they all would agree Eli is reckless with his passes anddoesntthrow to protect his receivers exposure.
